Discussion on Exhaustion of Essence due to Sexual Intercourse and Nocturnal Emission with Essence Loss
The Heavenly Master said: The so-called "Closing Treatment" refers to a method where one forcibly closes the gate when the body is extremely deficient, leading to the downward leakage of essence, and the gate (referring to the Kidney Gate or Essence Gate) fails to close. For example, when people reach the peak of pleasure during sexual intercourse and die due to excessive loss of essence by both men and women, or when they suffer from nocturnal emission or spermatorrhea that cannot be controlled, these are such cases. Death due to the loss of essence in men and women also occurs because Qi deficiency prevents self-control. In a moment of mutual lust and unrestrained indulgence, deficient fire flares up, and the lower origin (Yuan Qi in the Kidneys) is completely lost. First, Yin essence is discharged, followed by pure blood; after the blood is exhausted, Qi follows. At this time, one must absolutely not leave the bed but should continue to embrace the partner. If the man suffers from essence exhaustion, the woman should blow warm breath into his mouth; if the woman suffers from it, the man should blow warm breath into her mouth. By blowing continuously for several times, the patient will gradually regain consciousness, Yang Qi will return, and the Yin essence will not flow out completely. However, if one leaves the bed immediately, ceasing physical contact, the patient will die instantly. Nevertheless, if Decoction of Single Ginseng (Dúshēn Tāng) made from several taels of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma is rapidly decocted, with one qian of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, Prepared Root of Chinese Aconite) added internally and administered hot, there are cases of revival from apparent death. This is because sudden collapse is a temporary cessation of life functions; Yang Qi has not yet perished, only the Yin essence has been exhausted. Therefore, urgently tonifying the True Yang allows Yang to generate Yin, potentially restoring life from nothingness. Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma in the formula is purely a Qi-tonifying agent, while Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata is a miraculous drug for retrieving lost Yang. Their synergy facilitates success. If Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma is absent and only Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata is used, excessive Yang will further consume Yin; thus, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma must serve as the Sovereign herb. Once Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma is used, but sparingly due to reluctance to add more dosage, the treatment will ultimately fail. Since all Yin essence has been discharged, the body becomes like an empty shell. Without adding sufficient Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, how can Body Fluids be generated to nourish the regenerated Yin? Therefore, a large dose of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma is necessary to achieve efficacy.
Question: Is it feasible to use Yin-nourishing herbs to guide Yang?
The Heavenly Master replied: This seems plausible but is actually incorrect; it is merely the subjective speculation of Yu Jiayan (Yu Chang, courtesy name Jiayan). When Yin essence is entirely depleted, using Yin-nourishing substances is futile because there is no internal root from which to absorb the nourishment. Thus, one must tonify Yang to generate Yin, rather than tonify Yin to guide Yang. Logically, when Yin essence is exhausted, astringent herbs should be used to close the leakage. However, since there is no Yin left internally, what is there to astringe? Using only Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma to tonify Qi, once Qi is sufficient, Yin naturally generates. Once Yin is generated, the gate closes itself. This is "closing without closing," which is precisely superior to conventional astringency.
Regarding essence loss due to nocturnal emission, this method cannot be rigidly applied. Nocturnal emission often arises in scholars whose minds wander, or those who entertain lustful thoughts upon seeing beauty, or who experience trembling after ejaculation, or who strain their minds writing for temporary gratification, or who seek sexual partners due to restless sleep. This leads to overwhelming desire, unsettled Heart Qi, complete lack of moral restraint, and an open Essence Gate. Often, youth is wasted in distress, leaving only regret in old age, which is truly lamentable. I now prescribe a formula: Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shudi, Prepared Root of Chinese Foxglove) 8 liang, Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, Fruit of Cornelian Cherry) 4 liang, Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, Yam Rhizome) 8 liang, Schisandrae Fructus (Beiwuweizi, Schisandra Berry) 3 liang, Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, Ophiopogon Root) 3 liang, Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Ustam (Chao Zaoren, Fried Seed of Jujube) 4 liang, Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, Milkwort Root) 1 liang, Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, Plantago Seed) 3 liang, Poria (Fuling, Porii Sclerotium) 3 liang, Euryales Semen (Qianshi, Lotus Seed) 0.5 jin, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, Large-headed Atractylodes Rhizome) 8 liang. Each is ground into fine powder and formed into pills with honey. Take 1 liang daily with plain boiled water. One course will result in complete recovery and prevent recurrence. The brilliance of this formula lies in using Euryales Semen and Dioscoreae Rhizoma as Sovereign herbs, supported by Rehmanniae Radix Preparata and Corni Fructus, to directly nourish the Yin of the Heart and Kidneys. Additionally, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma promotes circulation in the waist and umbilical region, ensuring Yuan Jing (Essence) does not leak externally. Moreover, nocturnal emission inherently resists simple suppression; the more one tries to stop it, the more it leaks. It is better to tonify Yin Qi; even if occasional leakage occurs, it will not be disastrous. Why rely solely on tonification and astringency to prevent loss? Thus, "closing without closing" represents a deeper level of containment than mere astringents like Ostrea Concha (Muli, Oyster Shell) or Rosa Laevigata Fructus (Jinyingzi, Cherokee Rose Fruit). Plantaginis Semen promotes urination without depleting Qi; by promoting water metabolism, it preserves essence, a function that must not be overlooked.
Lord Zhang said: Both previous discussions are exquisite. Using breath to revive those exhausted by intercourse is good. However, if one does not understand the technique and uses cold breath, it is futile. One must first close the mouth and draw up Qi from Guanyuan (CV-4), cultivate it fully in the mouth, and then deliver it down the throat to save the patient at the brink of death. Otherwise, it may cause harm. One must not abruptly leave the bed; even if departing, one must do so slowly. Seeing the patient appear dead and fleeing in panic is dangerous. Embracing the body after leaving the bed prevents death. Such conditions are more common among the wealthy than the poor. For the wealthy, taking 3 to 1 jin of Decoction of Single Ginseng, decocted and灌 (administered), can restore consciousness. For the poor, including women in simple clothing, who also suffer from this, urgently administer Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 4 liang, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, Dang Gui) 2 liang, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata 2 qian, with 5 bowls of water decocted to 1 bowl, and administer rapidly. There are survivors. This knowledge is essential. Even if death appears to have occurred in bed, administration of medicine can bring them back. Generally, those who die at night can be saved if treated during the day; those who die during the day cannot be saved if treated at night. Regarding nocturnal emission, I have another excellent formula to supplement what the Heavenly Master omitted. For patients with daily emissions, whether dream-induced or spontaneous, this formula is effective: Euryales Semen 8 liang, Dioscoreae Rhizoma 10 liang, Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Cruda (Sheng Zaoren, Raw Seed of Jujube) 10 liang, Nelumbinis Plumula (Lianzixin, Lotus Plumule) 5 qian. Split the lotus seeds, discard the flesh, use only the green plumule, dry and roast until fragrant, then grind into powder. Mix with powders of the other herbs, form pills with rice paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 5 qian each morning and evening with plain boiled water. This formula contains profound principles within its simplicity. Emission triggered by mental movement indicates Heart deficiency and an open Essence Gate. Dioscoreae Rhizoma tonifies the Kidney and generates essence; Euryales Semen benefits the Heart and removes dampness; Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Cruda clears the Heart and supports the Fire of the Pericardium; Nelumbinis Plumule particularly clears the Heart, and its Qi descends to connect with the Kidney, facilitating the interaction between Heart and Kidney, serving as a sacred herb for closing the Essence Gate. Who knows that the efficacy of lotus seed lies entirely in clearing the Heart? This is due to worldly physicians' lack of reading. Indeed, this passage is recorded in the *Mahayana Lotus Sutra*, indicating that medical arts require understanding Buddhist classics. Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Cruda calms the mind to enable sleep, thereby preventing emission. Its妙 (wonder) lies in its combination with Dioscoreae Rhizoma, allowing sleep without emission.
Lord Hua said: Agreed.
Lei Gong said: I also have a most excellent formula for nocturnal emission. It consists of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma 8 liang, Dioscoreae Rhizoma 8 liang, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma 2 liang, Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Cruda 4 liang, Polygalae Radix 1 liang, Ophiopogonis Radix 4 liang, Euryales Semen 4 liang, Schisandrae Fructus Ustam 1 liang, Plantaginis Semen 1 liang. All are ground into powder and formed into honey pills. Take 5 qian daily with plain boiled water for self-healing. This is also a method of tonifying the Heart and Kidneys.
Sun Taizhen (Sun Simiao) said: For exhaustion of essence due to intercourse, urgently administering 3 liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma decocted in water is indeed a wonderful method, but how can poor families afford it? I have a method: Have someone hold the patient sitting up and blow air into their mouth. To ensure entry into the throat, use a hollow brush handle inserted into the patient's throat, allowing a woman to blow through it. It need not be the wife's relative; any woman can blow forcefully. Even the seemingly dead can be revived. What a marvelous method! Today I have revealed the secrets of Heaven and Earth. ([Commentary] Lord Sun has revealed all the secrets of Heaven and Earth.)
