Shegan Mahuang Decoction (Blackberry Lily and Ephedra Decoction): Use Heze Lan Rhizoma (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 射干) (thirteen pieces; in another method, three liang), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang, 生姜) (each four liang), Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛), Asteris Tatarinowii Radix (Ziwan, 紫菀), and Toddliae Flos (Kuandonghua, 款冬花) (each three liang), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子) (half sheng), and Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 大枣) (seven pieces). Use twelve sheng of water. First boil Ephedrae Herba until boiling, remove the foam on the surface, then add the remaining herbs. Boil to obtain three sheng of decoction, divide into three doses, and take warm. It treats cough with rebellious qi rising upward and a sound in the throat resembling that of a water frog.
Wutou Tang (Aconite Decoction): Use Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) (each three liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (roasted), and Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Chuanwu, 川乌) (five pieces). Coarsely crush the herbs. Use two sheng of honey to decoct until one sheng remains, at which point remove the Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix. Take the remaining four herbs, decoct with three sheng of water until one sheng remains, filter out the dregs, and add this liquid to the honey mixture. Re-decoct together. Take seven ge; if ineffective, take the entire amount. It treats gouty pain where joints cannot flex or extend.
Formula for Jaundice: Use Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (three liang). Decoct with five sheng of high-quality clear wine until two and a half sheng remain. Take all at once. In winter, use wine for decoction; in spring, use water. It treats jaundice.
Modified Formula: Use Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (five fen), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duohuo, 独活) (four fen), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (three fen), Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) (two fen), and Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛) (two fen). Decoct with six sheng of water until two sheng remain. Divide into three warm doses. The first dose induces slight sweating; the second dose induces profuse sweating. If there is heart heat, add Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄) (two fen); if abdominal fullness, add Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi, 枳实) (one piece); if rebellious qi, add Ginseng (Renshen, 人参) (three fen); if palpitations, add Oyster Shell (Muli, 牡蛎) (three fen); if thirst, add Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen, 栝楼根) (three fen); if pre-existing cold, add Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子) (one piece). It treats wind-stroke causing stiffness and spasm of hands and feet, pain in all joints, vexation and fever, mental disturbance, aversion to cold, and loss of appetite for several days.
This is Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) without Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝), adding Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit (Yizhiren, 益智仁) and Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻), decocted and taken. Combined with the method of kicking hot water gourds, wait for profuse sweating to expel the pathogen. It treats hemiplegia and slightly slurred speech due to wind-pathogen in the exterior. Suitable for late spring and early summer; contraindicated in winter.
Formula for Malaria 1: Use Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (devoid of nodes), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (each half liang). Use five qian per dose, decoct with water and take. It treats malaria occurring before the Beginning of Autumn (Chushu, 处暑), accompanied by headache and stiff neck, floating pulse, aversion to wind, and absence of sweating.
Formula for Malaria 2: Use Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (one liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (five qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (two qian), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝) (two qian), and Persicae Semen (Taoren, 桃仁) (thirty pieces, devoid of skin and tips). Five qian per dose, decoct with water and take. It treats malaria accompanied by aversion to wind and cold and absence of sweating.
