It is the preceding formula (Xiong Gui Jiao Ai Tang) minus E-Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf), and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, with doubled Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root), plus Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), and Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome). It treats abdominal pain in pregnant women.
It is the preceding formula (Dang Gui Shao Yao San) minus Fu Ling (Poria) and Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), plus Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), pounded into a powder, taken with wine, one cun bi (a measure of volume) per dose, twice daily. Pregnant women who take it regularly will have easier childbirth without distress, and it also addresses various postpartum ailments.
It is Xiong Gui Jiao Ai Tang minus Rehmanniae Radix Preparata and Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf), plus Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber), and Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber). It treats leukorrhea in women where half-blood has remained in the lower abdomen. Symptoms include incessant diarrhea, evening fever, urgency and fullness in the lower abdomen, vexatious heat in the palms, and dryness of the lips and mouth.
It is Xiong Gui Jiao Ai Tang minus Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root), plus Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), decocted with water and wine. It calms the fetus and treats painful urination.
It harmonizes Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), nourishes Qi and Blood, and treats deficiency and damage to the Chong and Ren meridians leading to irregular menstruation, abdominal and umbilical pain, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis (heavy or prolonged uterine bleeding), hard masses of blood stasis (Xue Xia), intermittent pain, fetal restlessness due to improper care during pregnancy, continuous vaginal bleeding, and postpartum conditions where wind-cold invades due to deficiency, causing lochia stagnation, formation of masses, hardness and pain in the lower abdomen, and alternating chills and fever.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root): Nourishes blood; for pain below the navel, this herb is indispensable as it enters the Kidney meridian.
Chuan Xiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome): Treats wind and soothes Liver Wood; for headache due to blood deficiency, this herb is indispensable as it enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root): Harmonizes blood and regulates Spleen; for empty pain in the abdomen, this herb is indispensable as it enters the Spleen meridian.
Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root): Harmonizes blood; for stabbing pain due to blood stasis, this herb is indispensable as it enters the Heart meridian. (Remove the root neck, soak in wine, and stir-fry.)
The above herbs are processed into coarse powder. Each dose consists of 3 qian, decocted with 1.5 cups of water until reduced to 0.8 cup. Strain and drink hot on an empty stomach before meals.
My commentary: The Qi and Blood of the human body are analogous to Yin and Yang of Heaven and Earth. The principle of Heaven and Earth is that Yang is often in excess while Yin is often deficient. Since humans resemble Heaven and Earth, Yin-Blood is difficult to form but easy to deplete.
Can harmonize.
Weak constitution.
Jie Gu's (Zhang Yuansu's) modification method:
In Spring, double Chuan Xiong. Reason 1: Spring season; Reason 2: Wiry pulse; Reason 3: Headache.
In Summer, double Shao Yao (Peony Root). Reason 1: Summer season; Reason 2: Surging pulse; Reason 3: Diarrhea.
In Autumn, double Di Huang (Rehmannia Root). Reason 1: Autumn season; Reason 2: Choppy/deficient pulse; Reason 3: Blood deficiency.
In Winter, double Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root). Reason 1: Winter season; Reason 2: Deep pulse; Reason 3: Coldness and loss of appetite. This is the method of taking the formula regularly to harmonize with the four seasons. If the disease does not resolve despite correct syndrome differentiation, it is considered a failure of auxiliary herbs (improper adjuvant use). One should follow...
