(Composition and Administration of Shenxiong Daoshui Wan): It is composed of Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) combined with Shenxiong Wan, plus Areca Seed (Binglang), Scolopendra (Quchong), and Groundnut Root Bark (Wangyi). These are ground into fine powder and formed into pills using water. Take on an empty stomach, five pills per dose, three times daily. Hejian (Liu Wansu) formulated this prescription based on the methods of Zhongjing (Zhang Zhongjing). It treats all diseases caused by water-dampness. Dairen (Li Dongyuan) stated: "Shizao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction) is the premier medicine for draining excessive water," which corresponds to the principle of "using warm medicines to purge downwards." It applies to conditions such as abdominal fullness and distension, edema due to water retention, parasitic swelling, retained fluid, phlegm-fluid accumulation, qi-blood stagnation obstructing free flow, wind-heat dryness and depression, limb numbness and paralysis, migrating pain, chronic or acute malaria and dysentery, etc. Women should also be treated according to these methods. The disease is eliminated as if swept away; therefore, Jia Tongzhi called it a miraculous divine drug.
According to Lou Quanshan: Zhouche Wan was standardized by Hejian. Initially take five pills, three times daily. If rapid purgation occurs, continue taking it until the disease is resolved. However, if extremely severe cases take too much after recovery, it may cause irritability, thirst, and lack of relief, worsening pain and oppression. One should initially take two pills, adjusting the dosage up or down by three or four pills based on strength and age (three to five pills for children aged three to four years). Follow the previous method for adjustments. When Dairen changed the form to granules, followed by administration of Chuan... substances. Bowel movement should occur at dawn, expelling various pathogens. For mild cases, one or two doses suffice; for severe cases, five or six doses are needed to cure. This mastery of controlling the treatment's intensity is not something a novice can achieve; only experienced practitioners with substantial capability dare to apply it in practice. I have personally prepared and administered it; when applied to robust individuals following Dairen's methods, it yields miraculous effects.
(Another Modification of Shenxiong Daoshui Wan): It is Shenxiong Wan minus Kansui Root (Yuanhua), Great Euphorbia Root (Daji), Chinese Date (Dazao), and Calomelas (Qingfen), plus Prunus Seed (Yuliren) and Mirabilite (Mangxiao). Lou Quanshan commented: This is the sage medicine for purging various accumulations. All dampness belongs to Earth; fire-heat can generate damp-Earth. Thus, in summer heat, all things are moist; in autumn coolness, dampness dries up again. Dampness affecting the Yang level leads to Wood overacting on Liver Wood, causing pain and requiring downward nourishment/purging.
(Modification of Shizao Tang): It is Shizao Tang plus Kelp (Haidai), Sargassum (Haizao), Prunus Seed (Yuliren), Croton Seed (Xuisui Zi), and Phytolacca Root (Shanglu Gen), boiled with Chinese Date flesh to form pills the size of small beans. Take fifty pills per dose, washed down with water.
(Specific Composition and Efficacy of Shenxiong Daoshui Wan): Use Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 1 liang), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong), and Mint Leaf (Bohe, each 0.5 liang), Rheum Palmatum Root (Dahuang, 2 liang), Talcum (Huashi), and Black Morning Glory Seed (Heiqianniu, each 4 liang). It treats consumptive disease with retained dampness and heat depression in the Yangming channels. Hejian formulated it to treat all heat syndromes; its merits cannot be fully described. In cases of prolonged heat depression, regardless of whether the patient is emaciated, weak, old, or young, and for any condition suitable for purgation, start with ten pills as a baseline. Regular use of this medicine clears gastrointestinal stagnation without damaging healthy Qi, promotes the elimination of turbidity and generation of freshness, facilitates smooth bowel movements, causes no dryness or irritation from the medicine, nor does it induce fatigue or deficiency. It aligns with the patient's mental state. In cases where heat depression causes facial discoloration or lack of expression...
