Use Zhike Erchen Tang (Bitter Orange and Two-Chen Decoction) added with Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), and Puerariae Radix (Gange) to treat headache, fever, aversion to cold, cough, expectoration, and qi rebellion.
Use Xiongsu Yin (Angelica Dahurica and Perilla Decoction) removing Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), adding Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang). It treats fever, headache, cough, hoarseness, and thick nasal discharge or sputum caused by wind-pathogen invasion. This medicine is greatly hot and promotes diaphragmatic comfort.
Use Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (1.5 qian), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) (devoid of radix tip), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (devoid of radix tip), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhigancao) (roasted), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (devoid of white pith), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike) (devoid of pulp, stir-fried with bran), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao) (prepared with ginger), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (each 1 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (devoid of radix tip, 0.7 qian). Cut the herbs into one dose. Use one zhong of water, three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), and three stalks of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai). Decoct until one zhong remains. Take at any time. Treats headache and fever due to wind-cold invasion, dispersing wind-pathogen.
There are several types of Shanghan (Cold Damage); ordinary people cannot distinguish them. Now, a single medicine is selected to treat multiple conditions. If initially feeling headache, body heat, and a surging pulse within one or two days of onset, take this prescription: Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (one handful, or use fourteen stalks), Sojae Semen Preparatum (Chi) (one sheng, wrapped in silk). The above two ingredients are boiled in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng. Take once to induce sweating. If sweat does not occur, add Puerariae Radix (Gegen) (three liang). Another version adds Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (three liang), boiled in five sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Add Congbai first, then Chi, and finally more Congbai to cook... Use Puerariae Radix (Gegen) (four liang), boiled in ten dou of water to obtain three sheng. Add Sojae Semen Preparatum (Chi) (one sheng), boil again to obtain one and a half sheng. Take warm in two doses. Sweating indicates recovery. Alternatively, drinking fresh Puerariae Radix juice (one to two sheng) is also good.
Use Sojae Semen Preparatum (Chi) (three sheng, wrapped in silk), Sal (Yan) (one liang), boiled in seven sheng of water to obtain two and a half sheng. Remove dregs, add Mel (Honey) (one sheng), boil vigorously for three boils. Take one sheng at once, then lie down. Vomiting should occur; if not, take another sheng. Vomiting is the therapeutic effect. It treats Shanghan where sweating has not ceased for three or four days, causing chest discomfort and desire to vomit.
Use Puerariae Radix (Gegen) (half jin), Mume Fructus (Wumei) (fourteen pieces), Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai) (one handful), Sojae Semen Preparatum (Chi) (one fen, wrapped in silk). Cut the above four ingredients. Boil in nine sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Divide into three doses. After the first dose, cover thickly to induce sweating. Wipe off sweat when it occurs. Treats Shanghan from one to three days, which should be treated by inducing sweating.
