A white tongue coating indicates that the pathogenic fire is not severe; use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). A yellow tongue coating indicates heart heat; use Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) to cool it. A yellow coating with a gray tint indicates stomach heat; use Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to resolve it. If the tip of the tongue is black but the rest is white, the pathogen has just entered the Heart channel; urgently use Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) combined with Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) to purge downward, which will lead to recovery; if ineffective, the condition will worsen, leading to death. If the tip is black and yellow, the pathogen is about to enter the Kidney channel; use Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). If the entire tongue is pure black, this is a Yin syndrome; the coating must be slippery, and there must be aversion to cold. This represents extreme heat resembling water, a critical condition. Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) can be used to separate fluids and drain heat, or Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) can be used abruptly, but caution is required to avoid misdiagnosis. Cao Daxian said: This method of tongue diagnosis is more comprehensive than *Jing Jian Lu* (Record of Tongue Mirrors) and avoids the risk of misdiagnosis. It is truly a boat of compassion for saving the world and a good prescription for saving lives.
Mao Ri Xing Jun (The Star Lord of the Mao Day Branch) said: If one grasps the essentials of pediatrics, there are no difficult cases to treat. I now specially transmit this method so that children in the world may all attain benevolence and longevity. First, observe the complexion and tendons. If tendons appear prominent horizontally, it indicates Liver cold. Observe whether the pulse is rapid or slippery. A rapid pulse indicates pathogenic factors; a slippery pulse indicates phlegm causing disease, such as heart-epigastric pain or masses. Now, three prescriptions are established for general treatment:
First Prescription: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 3 fen, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 5 fen, Fu Ling (Poria) 1 qian, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 fen, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 2 fen, Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) 3 fen, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber) 1 fen, Zhu Ling (Polyporus) 5 fen. [Note: The original text contains fragmented sentences here regarding its specific indication.]
Second Prescription treats external contractions, such as wind-cold injury with cough, fever or non-fever, headache, nasal congestion, excessive phlegm,惊悸 (palpitations/fright), and opisthotonos. Use this prescription for these conditions. For hypochondriac pain, add Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 qian. For abdominal pain, press with the hand; if pressing causes severe pain, it is food stagnation; add Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian. If pressing does not cause pain... [text fragment].
Third Prescription treats deficiency-cold syndromes, such as night sweats, nocturnal crying and insomnia, palpitations, chronic cough, delayed walking, delayed speech, turtle back, and dog belly. Use Fu Ling (Poria) 1 qian, Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) 3 qian, Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) 1 qian, Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix or Adenophorae Radix) 2 qian, Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. If accompanied by external contraction, add a small amount of Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 5 fen, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 qian, and Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen) 1 qian.
Xu Xian said: This prescription is rare in the world; it is truly a miraculous heavenly formula. If people believe in and take it, children can all attain benevolence and longevity.
