[Song Zhi (Pine Resin)]
Bitter, warm. Primarily treats carbuncles, malignant sores, alopecia capitis (head baldness), pruritus and scabies, as well as diseases transformed from damp-heat and fire. It disperses wind pathogens (due to its fragrance which scatters wind). It calms the five zang organs and replenishes body fluids. It eliminates heat. Its nature allows it to endure cold and heat. Long-term consumption makes the body light, prevents aging, and prolongs life. This is because pine trees are rich in resin and have long lifespans.
The essence and qi of the pine tree reside in its bark; therefore, its resin is generated from the bark. Although its texture is sticky and greasy, resembling dampness, its nature is extremely drying. Thus, it can treat all damp-heat pathogenic factors residing in the skin. Diseases such as carbuncles, ulcers, sores, and scabies are all caused by the stagnation of damp-heat and fire in the skin, inevitably leading to rotting flesh, skin damage, pus discharge, and scab formation before healing. The pine bark renews daily and monthly, with resin exuding from the skin without any injury. By perceiving its qi, pus is expelled and scabs fall off, leading to recovery. This principle relies on the similarity of forms (Xiang Bi Lei).
[Huai Shi (Sophora Fruit)]
Bitter, cold. Primarily treats internal heat caused by evil qi in the five zang organs, clearing root-fire that floats and fails to return to its source. It stops saliva and phlegm, clearing damp-heat fire in the Lung meridian. It tonifies severe injuries (Jue Shang). The Yangming channel governs joint movements; this herb nourishes the Yangming channel. Five types of hemorrhoids (Wu Zhi) and fire-sores, as well as breast masses (Ru Jia) in women, are all diseases of the Yangming dry-metal system. Urgent pain in the uterus is also a disease of the Yangming meridian.
Sophora fruits mature in autumn, complying with the command of Metal. Its color is yellow, corresponding to the color of Metal; thus, its nature and structure are clear and肃 (descending/clearing), making it an essential herb for the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian. When Metal is deficient, it is oppressed by Fire. Any excess fire that cannot return to its residence will invade the Lungs and Large Intestine. Receiving this clear and descending qi assists in retreating the fire. This is treating the root cause, a superior method of medicine.
[Bai Shi (Cacumen Platycladi / Seed of Oriental Arborvitae)]
Sweet, neutral. Primarily treats palpitations and fright, clearing wandering fire in the Heart meridian. It calms the five zang organs through its moistening function. It benefits Qi; since vigorous fire consumes Qi, when fire is tranquil, Qi increases. It eliminates wind-damp bi syndrome. Complying with the command of Autumn Metal, it can dry dampness and calm the Liver. Long-term consumption makes the skin lustrous and complexion beautiful, improves hearing and vision, and moistens the skin and orifices. One feels no hunger, does not age visibly, becomes light-bodied, and prolongs life. The nature of the Cypress does not rely on external irrigation to achieve longevity.
The Cypress is born with the firm and rigid nature of Heaven and Earth, unchanged by other things, remaining green even after winter. Thus, it can calm the mind, gather Heart Qi, and prevent invasion by evil winds and wandering fire. Human life depends on "Ren" (Benevolence/Humaneness) of Li (Principle), and Ren resides in the Heart. The vitality of things lies in their seeds/fruits; therefore, fruits are also called Ren. All plant seeds (Ren) can nourish Heart Qi, based on the principle of resonance between similar categories.
