[Cuttlebone]
Salty, slightly warm. Primarily treats leukorrhea (vaginal discharge) with red and white discharge in women, and metrorrhagia (irregular uterine bleeding). Treats blood obstruction, erosion and swelling/pain of the yin organs, alternating chills and fever, zheng jia masses (abdominal masses), and infertility. Grows in ponds and marshes.
(Praise:) A bag discarded during an eastern journey, floating by the sea. Its transformation arises from a mysterious force. The bone resembles that of the mantis egg case. Strong wind is needed for mooring; the ink within the abdomen clears turbidity. Vertical and horizontal patterns can be distinguished, whiter than fine jade.
Chen Cangqi states: People by the sea say this was transformed from a calculation bag discarded into the sea by Qin Shi Huang during his eastern tour. Cao Cao's Yuefu poem contains the line "floating ice drifts." Su Song states: Tao Hongjing says this object is transformed from a bird. *Erya* records: "The partridge is called qu." Li Shizhen states: This bone is named Hai Piao Xiao (Cuttlebone), white and brittle. *Erya Shu* states: Piao Xiao refers to mantis eggs. Ri Hua Zi states: When fish encounter storms, they use two whiskers to anchor themselves to rocks like cables, hence the name Lan Yu (Cable Fish). Su Song states: The fish has ink in its abdomen, capable of absorbing ink from waves, turning the water dark black for self-defense. Lei Xiao in *Leigong Paozhi Lun* states: Shark bones are also similar. Those with vertical grain are authentic; those with horizontal grain are fake. *History of Song* mentions beautiful jade Ying Yao.
[White Silkworm]
Salty. Primarily treats pediatric convulsions, epilepsy, and night crying. Expels three types of parasites. Removes dark spots. Improves complexion. Treats penile ulcers in men. Grows in plains and marshes.
(Praise:) Three cycles of rising and sleeping, suddenly disturbed by wind pathogen. Still gazing at the horse's head, moth eyebrows cease sweeping. No longer building cocoon chambers, silk intestines naturally coil. Avoiding the cauldron of boiling water, knowing the timing early.
Li Shizhen states: Silkworms undergo three rising and sleeping phases, transforming after twenty-seven days. Silkworms dying of wind disease turn white themselves. Xunzi's Fu says: "This one has a woman's body but a horse's head?" *Zuo Zhuan* says: "I only look to your horse's head." Zhao Mengfu's poem: "How delicate are the moth eyebrows." Du Fu's poem: "Lightly sweeping moth eyebrows to face the supreme ruler." *Pi Ya* states: Silkworms clothe themselves in cocoons, also called rooms. Huihong's song: "Lungs and intestines have become golden threads." *Records of the Grand Historian*: "Lin Xiangru requested to enter the cauldron." Su Shi's poem: "No need to speak of knowing the timing early."
[Fish Scale/Armor]
Pungent, slightly warm. Primarily treats abdominal zheng jia masses, deep-seated accumulation, alternating chills and fever, metrorrhagia in women, five-colored bloody discharge, pulling pain in the lower abdomen and yin organs, sores, scabies, and dead flesh. Grows in ponds and marshes.
(Praise:) Resembling twelve zodiac animals, five colors hidden. Flying horizontally across the shore, snoring in whirlpools. Drums announce the watch, rain summons torrents. Flattening scales and shoveling armor, daring to act small.
*Pi Ya* states: Its body possesses the meat of the twelve zodiac animals. *Shuowen Jiezi* states: It is an aquatic creature with five-colored patterns, back hairs all having scales and armor. Cao Zhi's letter: "The hidden dragon of Jiangdong." Li Shizhen states: It has the ability to fly horizontally but cannot ascend. Du Fu's poem: "Purple scales leap across the shore." Yang Jiong's poem: "Whirlpools turn in deep valleys." *Ji'an Haiwu Ji*: "Night sounds like drumsticks." Between Jianghuai, it is sometimes called Geng. Yuan Jue's poem: "Courtyard officials transmit the watch while writing edicts." Pan Yue's Fu: "Drums and war drums resonate with bangs." *Erya Yi* states: It can spit mist to bring rain. *Shijing* says: "Let it pour heavily." Yu Xin's Fu: "Flattening scales and shoveling armor." Li Shizhen states: Old ones are good at transforming into demons. Ouyang Xiu's poem: "Bold and small-bodied."
