Taste is sweet, nature is neutral. It primarily benefits the peaceful functioning of the Five Viscera (Zang organs). It calms the Heart Spirit (Shen), bringing joy and eliminating worry. Long-term consumption lightens the body, brightens the eyes, and fulfills desires. It grows in mountain valleys.
Planted by the courtyard side. In summer, the scenery is long and hot. The horse tassel flowers sway, inducing dizziness; the trimmed green leaves grow lush and abundant. It brings joy and eliminates anger; it opens during the day and closes at dusk. This affectionate tree is often planted together, resembling mandarin ducks that roost in pairs.
Quoting Wu Shidao's poem: "Roots planted facing the courtyard side." Han Qi's poem: "Moreover, this summer scenery is long." Yuan Jue's poem: "The neighing horse does not move, yet the horse tassel stands erect." (Referring to the Horse Tassel Flower). Han Qi's poem: "Red and white blooms form a dipped halo flower." Yong Yuzhi's poem: "Butterflies are still confused by the trimmed greenery." Du Mu's poem: "Branches and leaves naturally grow lush." *Yi Lin* states: "Coming with joy brings fortune." Ji Kang's discussion states: "Hehuan eliminates anger." The commentary on *Rites of Zhou* states: "Welcoming heat by day, seeking from Yang." Chen Cangqi says: "Its leaves close at dusk, hence named Hehun." *Hua Shi* records: In Xundun State, there is an "Affectionate Tree," which also opens by day and closes by night. Du Fu's poem: "Hehuan still knows the time, mandarin ducks do not roost alone." Ouyang Xiu's ci: "Mandarin ducks in the pond, water rippling gently."
Taste is salty, nature is neutral. It primarily treats damage to the Middle Jiao, severed meridians, and failure of Yin energy to rise. It strengthens willpower, tonifies Qi, promotes muscle growth, and makes the body robust and strong. It aids in conception and childbirth. The eye (referring to the eye or related part of the white horse) treats epilepsy, abdominal fullness, and malaria. It should be used after slaughtering the animal, specifically its suspensory hoof (the horny substance of the hoof). The suspensory hoof treats fright-evil, convulsions, and difficult lactation. It repels evil qi, ghost toxins, parasitic diseases, and inauspicious energies. It grows in marshy areas.
"Buying bones for a thousand gold" (a allusion to valuing talent or precious things); others also draw upon its guiding power. Strength concentrates in the potent penis. In spring, the wind of roaming and mating occurs. Wind enters the frosty hooves (describing speed). Candles flow like mirrors (describing bright eyes). Illuminating the night with silver flowers (describing white coat). Unbitting and unharnessing.
Huang Tingjian's poem: "Where is the buying of bones for a thousand gold today?" Shen Yue's preface: "Always keeping in mind guidance and support." Chen Cangqi says: "Select a silver-colored, disease-free white horse, during the spring roaming and mating season, when its strength and momentum are at their peak." Du Fu's poem: "Wind enters four hooves, making them light." Also: "Frosty hooves, a steed of a thousand miles." Preface by Emperor Jianwen of Liang: "Eyes containing flowing candles." Chen Su's fu: "Frequently, the two pupils sandwiched like mirrors." *Shuowen Jiezi*: "Essence of the eye." *Minghuang Zablu* records: The emperor had a mount named "Zhao Ye Bai" (Illuminating Night White). Bai Juyi's poem: "Chin adorned with silver flowers, tail dragging silk." Hong Xiwen's song: "Unbridling and unharnessing towards the thatched cottage."
