[Huai Shi (Sophora Fruit)]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold.
Indications: Primarily treats pathogenic heat in the five zang organs. Stops excessive saliva and phlegm. Tonifies severe injuries. Treats the five types of hemorrhoids and sores caused by fire-toxin. Treats breast masses (Ru Jia) in women. Treats uterine cramping pain. Grows in plains and marshes.
Seasonal shifts alternate cold and heat. Essence scatters, void stars appear. The pods are linked like beads; flowers drift down like golden rain. In early winter, Sophora wood candles are lit; on the Shangsi Festival, its allusions are explored. Harvesting follows the principle of "selecting two out of three," demonstrating its efficacy in significantly prolonging life.
The Commentary on the Rites of Zhou records: "In winter, take Sophora sandalwood as fuel." Li Qiao's poem states: "As the evening season shifts, cold fire is kindled." The Spring and Autumn Shuo Ti Ci records: "Sophora is the essence of the Void Star." Li Shizhen states: "Its fruit forms pods, linked like beads." Bai Juyi's poem reads: "Curling yellow flower branches." Ma Jiuchou's poem says: "Sophora flowers cover the ground, cold as gold." The Biography in the Book of Liang records: Yu Jianwu harvested Sophora fruits on the tenth month's Shangsi day. Famous physicians state: It can be made into divine candles. Wang Lingran's judgment mentions: "Having lost the ritual of ancestral temple rotation." Lei Xiao's discussion on processing notes: When harvesting fruits, only select those with three or two seeds per node. Zhuangzi advises: "Do not include three." Zuo Zhuan records Zifan saying: "I select two." Emperor Wu of Liang's poem declares: "Clearly proving it extends longevity."
[Gou Qi (Goji Berry)]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold.
Indications: Primarily treats pathogenic qi in the five zang organs, heat-in-the-middle with thirst (Xiao Ke), and generalized bi-syndrome. Long-term use strengthens sinews and bones, lightens the body, and prevents aging. Also known as Qi Gen, Di Gu, Ju Ji, and Di Fu. Grows in plains and marshes.
Thorns of Qu and branches of Qi bear combined names. Autumn fruits hang red; spring shoots veil in dark green. Immortals' staffs fly at dawn; spirit dogs bark at night. South and north of mountains, poets often express sorrow.
Li Shizhen states: Gou Qi refers to two trees. This plant has thorns like the Qu tree and stems like the Qi tree, hence the combined name. Erya explains it as complementary pairing. Commentary on the Classic of Poetry records: The fruit of Bao Qi ripens red in autumn. Su Song states: Leaves sprout in spring. Liu Yuxi's poem reads: "Emerald leaves cage the stone crevices; deep red fruits illuminate the copper vase." Famous physicians state: Also known as Immortal Staff. Shi Ziyu's fu writes: "Immortal staff flies through the air." Su Shi's poem says: "Spirit flying squirrels may bark at night." The Classic of Poetry states: "There are Goji bushes in the southern mountain," and again: "Ascending the northern mountain, gathering Goji." Jiang Yan's edict laments: "Forever speaking of much sorrow."
