[Rhinoceros Horn]
Bitter, cold. Primarily treats various toxic insect bites and infections, evil spirits, and malevolent qi (vital energy). Kills the poison of Gouwen (Aconitum ferox), Zhen bird feathers, and snake venom. Eliminates pathogenic factors, preventing confusion or excessive sleepiness. Long-term consumption lightens the body. Grows in mountain valleys.
Beautiful is the rhinoceros from Liang Mountain, good at dispelling anger and resentment. Its nature connects with heaven and earth, its qi contains the halo of stars. Placed in water, it illuminates and repels dust. Its will is cold to resolve indignation. Precious ornaments hang from the waist; why grind it into powder to disrupt order?
The *Erya* records: Among the beauties of the south is the rhinoceros horn from Liang Mountain. The *Du Yang Bian* records: Princess Tongchang possessed a rhinoceros belt; wearing it allows one to dispel anger. *Baopuzi* records: The Tongtian Rhinoceros has white lines like threads running through its horn. The *Guangzhou Zhi* records: It is said that when the rhinoceros gazes at the stars, starlight enters its horn. The *Book of Jin* biography of Wen Qiao records: When Wen Qiao passed Niuzhu, he lit the rhinoceros horn to illuminate the water, seeing aquatic creatures. The *Shuyi Ji* records: The Quechen Rhinoceros (Dust-Repelling Rhinoceros), when placed on a seat, prevents dust from entering. *Kaiyuan Yishi* records: The Jiaozhi Kingdom presented the Bihan Rhinoceros (Cold-Averting Rhinoceros); during severe cold, it emitted warm qi. *Guan Yinzi* records: One who is angry may forget the cold. *Bai Kong Liutie* records: Emperor Wenzong of Tang invited Li Xun to lecture on the *I Ching* in midsummer; placing the Bishe Rhinoceros (Heat-Averting Rhinoceros) by his seat generated a cool breeze. Kong Pingzhong's poem: "The wind clears away indignation." Su Shi's poem: "The rhinoceros on the waist connects fully." *Guidian Lu* records: Human breath affects powdered rhinoceros.
[Swallow Droppings]
Pungent, neutral. Primarily treats Gu poison (poison caused by magical means) and Gui Zhu disease (wandering pestilence). Drives away inauspicious pathogenic factors. Breaks the five types of Long Bi (urinary retention), promotes urination. Grows in plains and valleys.
Swallows fly, their tails forked unevenly; they build nests with mud and grass; flowers scatter while feeding young. Inhaling air during malaria chills; mixing with Qingyang fat (fat of a black sheep) to treat Zhu disease. Avoids Wuji days for nesting, presenting auspicious signs to welcome blessings.
(Pronunciation: Tanglian qie)
The *Book of Han* records a nursery rhyme: "Swallow swallow, forked tail, swallows come flying, swallows peck droppings." The *Classic of Poetry* records: "Uneven are their wings." Du Mu's poem: "Where do they build nests as summer half passes?" Liu Jian's poem: "Spring mud by the river bank carries rain in its beak." Lu Chen's fu: "Weighing priority and equality in feeding." Emperor Jianwen of Liang's poem: "Carrying flowers falling north of the door." Chen Cangqi says: Swallow droppings mixed with wine, causing inhalation but not swallowing, used to suppress malaria chills. Famous doctors say: Mixed with Qingyang fat into pills to treat Zhu disease. *Wenjian Houlou* records: Swallows avoid building nests on Wuji days.
