[Ronghua]
Bitter, neutral and cold in nature. It mainly treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Wen Nue (Warm Malaria). It directs downward to eliminate water retention in the twelve meridians. It breaks up accumulations, hard masses, and Zheng Jia (abdominal masses). It clears out lingering pathogenic factors and food stagnation in the intestines and stomach. It dispels cold and heat pathogenic factors. It promotes urination. It grows in mountains and valleys.
The plant is small and grows in clusters. The flowers are abundant and lush. When fresh, they are yellow and moist; when dried and exposed to the sun, they turn white and float down. Sometimes Tao Hua (Peach Flower) is used to replace Ronghua, causing confusion in names. In Yongzhou, where the soil is fertile, it grows abundantly on hills and ridges.
Li Shizhen said: The plant is small with clustered flowers; this is the meaning of "Rao" (abundant). Its flowers are plentiful. They are yellow when fresh and white when dry. Some say that if Ronghua is unavailable, Tao Hua is used as a substitute due to similar efficacy. The ancient Yuefu poem contains the line "The plum tree replaces the peach in falling." Tao Hongjing said: It resembles Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flos) but is extremely fine. Han Baosheng said: The variety from Yongzhou is superior, growing on hills and plains, with seedlings about two chi tall. Wang Rong's ode contains the line "The humble intentions of sunflowers and beans are merely tilted upwards."
[Yazi]
Bitter and cold in nature. It treats pathogenic factors, heat qi, scabies and itching, malignant sores, wounds, and hemorrhoids. It expels Ascaris lumbricoides (white worms). Also known as Ye Lang Ya (Wild Wolf Tooth). It grows in mountains and valleys.
Its shape resembles She Mei (Duchesnea indica). Harvesting varies by season. Leaves expand in spring and summer, while roots curl in autumn and winter. It bites fiercely and greedily like a wild wolf, with sharp teeth like a biting dog. Those that rot in dampness and develop mold are toxic. They require chewing and trimming.
Han Baosheng said: The seedlings resemble She Mei but are thicker and larger. Wang Ji said: She Mei is also called She Han. Yang Yan said: It treats insect sores. Leaves should be harvested before June, and roots after June, chewed raw. *Qianjin Fang* records: For those bitten by the "She Gong" (arrow bug), take roots in winter and leaves in summer, crush them to extract juice and drink. Famous physicians said: It is also known as Ye Lang Chi (Wild Wolf Tooth) and Ye Lang Zi (Wild Wolf Seed). Those that rot in dampness and grow mold can be fatal. Wu Pu said: It is also known as Can Ya (Dog Tooth). Lu Wen described its ability to trim away strange pathogens.
[Yangzhizhu]
Acrid and warm in nature. It treats Zei Feng (Robber Wind) causing creeping pain in the skin. It treats Wen Nue (Warm Malaria), malignant toxins, and various Bi syndromes (painful obstruction). It grows in mountains and valleys.
Like jade branches blooming in spring vessels, yellow fills the fields. Fierce tigers speak, striking solitary sheep startles goats. Melon flowers have five petals, peach leaves spread apart. Reflecting on the mountain like brocade, differently illuminating red makeup.
Famous physicians said: It is also known as Yu Zhi (Jade Branch). Flowers are harvested in March. Su Gong said: It resembles Xuan Hua (Campanula medium), with yellow flowers. Li Shizhen said: It is also known as Lao Hu Hua (Tiger Flower) and Jing Yang (Startling Goat). *Gujin Zhu* records: Goats scatter when they see it. Han Baosheng said: The flower has five petals like melon flowers, and leaves like peach leaves. Su Song said: It grows extensively in Lingnan and along the Sichuan roads, deep red like brocade. Li Shizhen said: The red variety is called Shan Zhizhu (Mountain Rhododendron), also known as Ying Shan Hong (Reflecting Mountain Red), which belongs to a different category. Jiang Zong's poem contains the line "The morning sun shines on red makeup."
