[Earthworm]
Salty in taste, cold in nature. Primarily treats Shejia (abdominal mass resembling a snake). Expels the Three Parasites (roundworm, pinworm, and liver fluke). Treats Fushi (chronic wasting disease latent within the body), Guizhu (infectious disease similar to tuberculosis), and Guduo (gu poison). Kills Changchong (large intestinal parasites). It dissolves into water when exposed to salt. Grows in flat soil, drinking spring water and eating earth clods. Its characteristics symbolize mental clarity and integrity. Blue clouds drip dew on clear days; emerald rain wets and stains. Winding through the spring painting, coiling and hiding in winter. Sealed with mud (Liuyi Mud), it cannot protect itself from the touch of salt. Dongfang Qiu's Fu states: "Eats dust and earth clods above, drinks abyssal spring water below." The *Huainanzi* says: "Those who eat earth have no selfish heart and are wise." The *Mencius* states: "To fulfill the integrity of Chen Zhongzi, only the earthworm can do so." Ren Shilin's Fu states: "Blue clouds drip dew on clear days." Chen Lü's poem states: "The curved eaves hold the coolness of fine emerald rain." Li Deyu's Fu states: "Winding into the void and whiteness." Su Shi's song states: "Spring earthworms and autumn snakes drawn at will." The *Yilin* states: "Coiled knots are hard to untie." The *Book of Rites* states: "In the second month of winter, the earthworm coils." The *Shisui Ji* states: "On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month at noon, take earthworms from the leek field, dry them, and call them Liuyi Mud, which treats fishbone impaction." Dongfang Qiu's Fu states: "Protects oneself by coating with mud; touched by salt, it is nourished but not preserved." Kou Zongshi says: "For those poisoned by it, soak in salt water and drink salt water."
[Bee]
Pungent in taste, neutral in nature. Primarily treats chronic deafness. Ni cough. Toxic vapors are expelled through sweating after acupuncture. Grows in rivers and valleys.
Chirping. Deep affection carrying offspring on its back. Digging holes with a slender waist. Small tail fluttering flowers. Different in origin, same in outcome. Affection transmits, essence entrusted. Spider webs sealed with dust. Building nests in reeds. Tang anonymous Fu states: "Flapping wings. Chirping conveys intent." The *Classic of Poetry* states: "The silkworm moth has sons, the fruit wasp carries them." *Moke Huixi* states: "Those that dig holes for nests are called Ye'ou." Yuan dynasty poet's poem states: "Slender waist soft and weak." Li He's poem states: "Yellow bee's small tail flutters flowers returning." Tang anonymous Fu laments different origins but same outcomes. Qi Qiu's text states: "This insect, the son of the silkworm moth, transmits affection, exchanges essence." Xue Daoheng's poem states: "Dark windows hang spider webs." Liu Zongyuan's poem states: "Inkstone box left with dust sealed all day." Tao Hongjing says: "There is a type of black bee with a very thin waist, carrying mud to build houses on human dwellings and objects, laying eggs as large as millet grains, capturing more than ten green spiders from grass, filling the nest and sealing the mouth. Another type enters reed tubes, also capturing green insects from grass."
