[Musk Deer Fat]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. Primarily treats carbuncles and swellings (Yongzhong), malignant sores (Echuang), necrotic muscle tissue (Siji), wind-damp bi syndrome caused by cold (Hanfeng Shibi), and flaccid paralysis or contracture of the four limbs (Sizhi juanhuan bu shou). Treats swelling and qi stagnation in the head (Fengtou zhongqi), and unblocks the couli (Couli - interstices of skin and hair follicles). Also known as Guan Zhi. Grows in mountain valleys.
Musk deer roam in marshes, fond of listening to sounds, with a nature that is infatuated with herd females. Their bodies accumulate condensed fat. It is light, cool, and dissipating; ground and boiled over living fire. The calculating mind has long been discarded, naturally moisturizing and playing freely.
The commentary on *Book of Later Han* states: A group of ten thousand musk deer digs up grass roots, turning the area into mud, called "Mi Ci". *Pi Ya* states: Musk deer are fond of sounds. *Baihu Tong De Lun* states: As a beast, the musk deer is prone to confusion. Tao Hongjing said: One male musk deer mates with more than ten females. Its fat falls to the ground; *Commentary on the Water Classic* describes it as condensed fat hanging down, looking like ice and snow. Wei Chong's fu says: Secretly breaking light ice. The commentary on *Rites of Zhou* states: In summer, musk is offered; musk fat disperses, and when dispersed, it is cool. Lu You's poem: Living fire generates new flames. *Qimin Yaoshu* states: Eat roasted fat ones, grind finely and boil. Du Fu's poem: The calculating mind has long been forgotten, why startle the musk deer? The biography in *Book of Later Han*: Kong Fen lived amidst fat and grease but could not moisturize himself. Su Shi's poem: Disregarding all matters, only seeking playful leisure.
[Shu Bird / Flying Squirrel-like creature]
Primarily treats abortion (Duotai) and facilitates childbirth. Grows in flat valleys.
Yan describes the fetal bird, descending from heights, wings like a bat, body like a fox, ears like a musk deer, head like a rabbit. Cries mixed with night watches, flying while carrying milk to nurse. Sensing qi, they urge each other, turning eyes to gaze.
The *History of Song* states: Praising this viviparous bird. The commentary on *Erya* states: It can descend from high places but cannot ascend from low places. Shape like a small fox, resembling a bat, with fleshy wings. The commentary on *Classic of Mountains and Seas* states: Also named Er Shu, with musk deer ears and a rabbit head. Li Shizhen said: Likes to cry at night. *Shuowen Jiezi* refers to birds that fly and give birth to live young. Also named Fei Sheng. Sleeping on its hide and holding its claws both aid in inducing labor. Eating it prevents dullness and can resist hundred poisons. Zao Ju's poem: Turning eyes to look at Qu'a. Han Ju's poem: Looking far south.
[Camel Hair]
Salty in flavor, neutral in nature. Primarily treats Gui Zhu (ghost-related chronic disease), Gu poison, alternating chills and fever (Hanye), fright and epilepsy (Jingxian), and manic running (Kuangzou). Camel hair is especially effective.
Six domestic animals reproduce smoothly, applied to the four limbs. Attaching to skin, falling off easily when burned; removing belly fur enhances appearance. Hooves are round or split, claws tear through armor. Bright camels have warm, thick hair, blowing away hair to escape heat.
The biography in *Book of Han* states: Six domestic animals reproduce smoothly. *Mencius*: Applied to the four limbs. *Book of Yan*: Jia Jian shot an ox from a hundred paces away with a bow, hair falling off upon touching the skin. Liu Wen: Falling off is as easy as burning hair. *Baopuzi*: Removing useless fur from the back and belly. The biography in *Book of Song*: Bears sharpen their claws, harboring the heart to seize and tear. *Youyang Zazu*: Bright camel's thousand-li feet, often mistakenly written as "singing character". *Pi Ya*: Camel hair is thick, warm, and dense; in summer, shedding all hair allows it to avoid heat. Han Yu's poem: Alas, no blade that blows hair.
