Kongqing (Azurite): Sweet in flavor, cold in nature. It primarily treats blindness due to eye disease and deafness. It brightens the eyes, benefits the nine orifices, unblocks the blood vessels, and nourishes the spirit. Long-term consumption makes the body light, prolongs life, and prevents aging.
It can transform copper, iron, lead, and tin into gold. It grows in mountains and valleys.
Wu Pu states: Kongqing is sweet according to Shennong; another classic states it is sour. Long-term consumption causes immortals and jade maidens to appear, elevating one's aspirations (cited in Taiping Yulan).
The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica states: Kongqing grows in Yizhou and in the mountains of Yue where copper exists. It is generated by the fumes of copper essence, has a hollow interior, and is harvested in mid-March, though it can be collected at any time.
Commentary: The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Western Regions) states: Beneath Mount Huangren, there is much green matter. Guo Pu annotates: Kongqing belongs to the category of Zengqing. Fanzi Jiran states: Kongqing originates from Ba Commandery. Sima Xiangru's Rhapsody mentions "Danqing." Zhang Yi annotates: Qing refers to green stone. Yan Shigu annotates: Green stone is what is now called Danqing.
Zengqing (Chrysocolla): Sour in flavor, slightly cold in nature. It primarily treats eye pain, stops tearing, expels wind-bi syndrome, benefits the joints, unblocks the nine orifices, and breaks up hard masses and accumulations. Long-term consumption makes the body light.
It can transform gold and copper. It grows in mountains and valleys.
The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica states: Zengqing grows in Shu and Yue. It can be collected at any time.
Commentary: Guanzi, Chapter Kuidu, states: Zengqing is found at Mount Qinming; Xunzi states: There is Zengqing in the South Sea. Yang Qiong annotates: Zengqing is the essence of copper. Fanzi Jiran states: Zengqing comes from Hongnong and Yuzhang; Baiqing comes from Xintu. Those that are green in color are superior. Huainanzi, Chapter Dixing, states: After eight hundred years of blue sky, Qingzeng is born. Gao You annotates: Zengqing is a green stone.
Yuyuliang (Haematite): Sweet in flavor, cold in nature. It primarily treats cough with reverse flow of Qi, alternating chills and fever, vexation and fullness, dysentery with red and white discharge (the character for dysentery appears in Taiping Yulan), blood obstruction, zhijia (masses), and excessive heat. When refined and taken as pills, it suppresses hunger, makes the body light, and prolongs life. It grows in pools, marshes, and on mountain islands.
The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica states: Yuyuliang is also known as Baiyuliang, growing in the East Sea and in pools and marshes.
Commentary: Fanzi Jiran states: Yuyuliang originates from Hedong; Lie Xian Zhuan states: Chi Fu went to Mount Hua to obtain Yuyuliang; Bowuzhi states: It is traditionally said that when Yu controlled the waters, he discarded his leftover food in the river, which turned into medicine. Analysis: Since this content originates from the Shennong Bencao Jing, the "Yu" here does not refer to Yu the Great of Xia. It likely originally had the name Baiyuliang, and the name was transferred by texts such as the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica.
