Minister Liu Jin stated: The art of acupuncture and moxibustion is profound in its principles. Errors in acupoint location methods have existed for a long time. For instance, the Back-Shu points (Back-Shu points, acupoints on the bladder meridian corresponding to internal organs) and Gaohuang (BL-43, Gallbladder Meridian) are vital points capable of reviving the dying, yet their proportional measurements have all been subject to errors. I received correct instruction directly from Mr. Chen; every point and method is based on precise measurements.
Regarding the Back-Shu points, ancient texts state that they are located 1.5 cun lateral to the spine, totaling 3 cun, divided between both sides. However, it is unknown that the character "jia" (clamp/adjacent) in "jia ji" refers to excluding the vertebral column itself. If including the vertebral column, the measurement should be 2 cun lateral to each side of the spine, totaling 4 cun, divided between both sides.
Similarly, regarding Gaohuang (BL-43), laypeople often search only according to book locations, whereas the true acupoint is found where pressing elicits soreness and pain. Whenever I treat using this method, recovery is frequently achieved.
Furthermore, regarding proportional measurement methods, common people steal and falsely transmit knowledge, applying "body-inch" (tong shen cun, a proportional measurement unit based on the patient's own body dimensions) uniformly from the head, back, to the dorsum of hands and feet. It is unknown that the head has its own dimensions, and the abdomen has its own dimensions; horizontal and vertical measurements differ, each having its specific key points. Only the back and the extremities (hands and feet) uniformly use body-inches for locating points. Learners must pay close attention to this, hence these writings are recorded to correct errors.
From the anterior hairline to the posterior hairline is measured as twelve segments, equivalent to one chi and two cun. If the anterior hairline is unclear, measure three cun upward from the midpoint of the eyebrows; if the posterior hairline is unclear, measure three cun upward from Dazhui (GV-14, Governing Vessel); if both anterior and posterior hairlines are unclear, measure a total of one chi and eight cun.
One cun horizontally is defined by the distance from the inner canthus to the outer canthus of the eye. This method is used for all horizontal measurements on the head.
From Shenting (GV-24, Governing Vessel) to Qucha (EX-HN4, Extra Point), from Qucha to Benshen (GB-13, Gallbladder Meridian), and from Benshen to Touwei (ST-8, Stomach Meridian), each measures 1.5 cun. From Shenting to Touwei, the total is 4.5 cun.
From Dazhui (GV-14) down to the coccyx, there are twenty-one vertebrae in total, measured as three chi.
The upper seven vertebrae: each measures 1.41 cun, totaling 9.87 cun.
The middle seven vertebrae: each measures 1.61 cun.
The fourteenth vertebra is level with the umbilicus, totaling 2.114 chi.
The lower seven vertebrae: each measures 1.26 cun.
The second row of Jiaji points (EX-B2, Extra Points adjacent to the spine): 1.5 cun lateral to the spine, excluding 1 cun for the spine itself, totaling 4 cun, divided between both sides. The third row of Jiaji points: 3 cun lateral to the spine, excluding 1 cun for the spine itself, totaling 7 cun, divided between both sides.
