When the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian is diseased, it manifests as lung distension and fullness, with a sensation of qi stagnation leading to wheezing and coughing. There is pain in the supraclavicular fossa (Quepen). In severe cases, the patient may cross their hands over the chest and experience visual blurring; this is termed "Arm Jue" (Arm Reversal). This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by the Lung: cough, rebellious qi and wheezing, thirst, mental restlessness, chest and heart fullness, pain along the anterior medial aspect of the arm, and heat in the palm. If there is excess pathogen, symptoms include shoulder and back pain, aversion to wind, sweating, stroke, frequent urination, and yawning. If there is deficiency of healthy qi, symptoms include shoulder and back pain, aversion to cold, shortness of breath, and changes in urine color.
When the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian is diseased, it manifests as toothache and neck swelling. This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by body fluids: yellow eyes, dry mouth, nasal congestion or epistaxis, throat obstruction, pain in the anterior shoulder, and pain or dysfunction of the index finger. If there is excess pathogen, heat and swelling occur along the course of the meridian. If there is deficiency, chills and rigors occur that are difficult to recover from.
When the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian is diseased, it manifests as shivering and tremors, a tendency to groan, frequent yawning, and a darkened complexion. Upon onset, the patient fears people and fire, startles at the sound of wood, desires to act alone, closes doors and windows, and stays indoors. In severe cases, they may climb high places to sing, strip naked, and run. Abdominal rumbling and distension occur; this is termed "Jue". This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by blood: mania, malaria, warm pathogens, sweating, nasal congestion or epistaxis, sores on lips, neck swelling, throat obstruction, massive abdominal edema, and painful swelling of the knee patella. Pain extends along the chest, breast, Qichong area, anterior thigh, lateral to Futu, and dorsum of the foot, with dysfunction of the middle toe. If qi is excessive, the anterior body becomes hot; if stomach qi is excessive, food is digested quickly with hunger, and urine is yellow. If qi is deficient, the anterior body becomes cold and shivering; if stomach cold exists, abdominal distension occurs.
When the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian is disease, it manifests as stiffness of the tongue root, vomiting after eating, epigastric pain, abdominal distension, frequent belching, and a feeling of relief after defecation or passage of gas. The body feels heavy. This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by the Spleen: pain at the tongue root, inability to move the body, difficulty swallowing, mental restlessness, urgent pain in the epigastrium, loose stools, masses, diarrhea, water retention, jaundice, inability to lie flat, swelling of the inner thighs and knees when standing forcibly, and dysfunction of the big toe.
When the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian is diseased, it manifests as dry throat, heart pain, thirst, and desire to drink; this is termed "Arm Jue". This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by the Heart: yellow eyes, flank pain, pain along the posterior medial aspect of the arm, and heat and pain in the palm.
When the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian is diseased, it manifests as sore throat, swelling of the mandible, inability to turn the head, a sensation of the shoulder being pulled out, and a sensation of the elbow being broken. This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by fluids: deafness, yellow eyes, cheek swelling, and pain along the posterior lateral aspect of the neck, shoulder, elbow, and arm.
When the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian is diseased, it manifests as headache striking upward, eyes feeling as if dislocated, neck feeling as if pulled, spinal pain, waist feeling as if broken, inability to flex the thighs, cramping in the popliteal fossa as if bound or torn; this is termed "Ankle Jue". This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by sinews: hemorrhoids, malaria, mania, epilepsy, pain in the vertex and neck, yellow eyes, tearing, nasal congestion or epistaxis, pain in the nape, back, loins, sacrum, and feet, and dysfunction of the little toe.
When the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is diseased, it manifests as hunger without desire to eat, a sallow and dark complexion like lacquered charcoal, coughing up blood, noisy breathing, a desire to rise from sitting, blurred vision, and a sensation of the heart hanging empty as if hungry. If qi is deficient, there is easy fright, palpitations, and a sense of being hunted. This is termed "Bone Jue". This meridian primarily governs diseases generated by the Kidney: oral heat, dry tongue, swollen and painful throat, rebellious qi, dry and painful throat, mental restlessness, heart pain, jaundice, dysentery, pain along the posterior medial aspect of the spine and thigh, flaccidity syndromes, reversal syndromes, lethargy, and heat and pain in the soles of the feet.
When the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian is diseased, it manifests as heat in the palm, spasm and tightness of the arm and elbow, swelling of the axilla, and in severe cases, distending fullness in the chest and hypochondrium.
The Yin Qiao Mai governs specific conditions: Bian Que stated that yang is slack and yin is tense. Wang Shuhe noted that tension should be above the medial malleolus and relaxation above the lateral malleolus. He also stated that pulsation at the posterior part of the Cunkou pulse indicates the Yin Qiao Mai. Symptoms include epilepsy, alternating chills and fever, skin numbness and bi-syndrome, lower abdominal pain, internal urgency, pain connecting the waist and hip to the genitals, male yin hernia, and female leukorrhea or uterine bleeding.
The Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel) governs specific conditions: Bian Que stated that abdominal fullness accompanies a limp waist, as if sitting in water. Ming Tang stated that for women, it involves lower abdominal pain, internal urgency, convulsions, irregular menstruation, and red and white leukorrhea.
The Yin Wei Mai governs specific conditions: Wang Shuhe stated symptoms include epilepsy, sudden collapse with loss of speech, itching of muscles and skin, sweating, aversion to wind, and shivering. He further stated that a deep, large, and solid Yin Wei pulse governs chest pain, hypochondriac fullness, and heart pain. A bead-like pulse indicates male hypochondriac fullness, waist pain, female genital pain, or sores.
The Yang Wei Mai governs specific conditions: Wang Shuhe stated symptoms include muscle bi-syndrome with itching, skin pain, numbness in the lower body, sweating with cold, collapse, barking sounds, limb traction, and in severe cases, inability to speak. Zhang Jiegu stated that Wei Qi belongs to Yang and governs the exterior; when Yang Wei is affected, disease is in the exterior, causing chills and fever. Ying Qi belongs to Yin and governs the interior; when Yin Wei is affected, disease is in the interior, causing heart pain. When Yin and Yang mutually maintain each other, Ying and Wei harmonize; when they do not harmonize, one experiences desolation and loss of will, unable to control oneself.
