In various diseases, thirst often occurs. These conditions have been discussed in their respective primary syndromes. Here, we specifically highlight cases of spontaneous thirst without underlying disease and thirst occurring after the recovery from illness. Can be selected for use: Shen Shu San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Powder), Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Suo Pi Tang (Spleen-Restraining Decoction), or Qi Zhen San (Seven Treasures Powder) with one qian of Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit). Sheng Liao Wu Ling San (Raw Material Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) with one qian of Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) is named Chun Ze Tang (Spring Spring Decoction). Combining Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) and Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) is also called Chun Ze Tang (Spring Spring Decoction), which is a particularly important remedy. Additionally, one may consume Si Hao Zhou (Four Old Men Porridge).
For chronic depletion from prolonged illness leading to Kidney Deficiency and thirst, Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) and Huang [Di] Yin (Yellow [Cistanche/Gastrodia] Decoction - *Note: Text likely implies Di Huang Yin but character missing*) are suitable. Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with half a qian each of Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit) can be used. Alternatively, Qi Zhen Yin Da Bu Tang (Seven Treasures Drink Great Tonifying Decoction) with Bai Zhu removed and Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit) added in equal amount is appropriate. For patients with blood loss or postpartum women experiencing thirst during confinement, this is termed Xue Ke (Blood Thirst). Remedies should focus on nourishing blood, as discussed in the section on Hematemesis under the Blood Gate. If there is sudden severe thirst without apparent cause that subsides shortly after, only Honey Water or Suo Pi Tang (Spleen-Restraining Decoction) should be used. Drinking a few mouthfuls of cold Zhe Er Gan (twice-washed rice water) is also acceptable.
For alcohol-induced thirst, Ge Gen (Pueraria Root) combined with Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is indicated.
(Attached: Yellow Complexion)
A yellow complexion arising from Jaundice generally falls into five categories, all relating to the color of Spleen Earth. Damage to the Spleen organ manifests externally. For cases where the whole body and face/eyes are yellow, Sheng Liao Wu Ling San (Raw Material Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is suitable. Alternatively, add Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) to Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), or combine half a dose each of Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) and Ping Wei San (Stomach-Calming Powder), named Wei Ling Yin (Stomach Five-Ingredient Decoction). Huang Han (Yellow Sweat) results from heat in the Spleen and Stomach; bathing in water while sweating causes the sweat to be yellow, hot, and stain clothing. The aforementioned remedies are suitable. Huang Dan (Jaundice) arises from excessive eating and drinking causing extreme heat in the Zang-Fu organs, compounded by Wind-Dampness obstruction, leading to stagnation and steaming of Damp-Heat. This causes general yellowing of the body and eyes, sometimes with chills and fever. The aforementioned remedies are suitable. Jiu Dan (Alcohol Jaundice) results from excessive alcohol consumption, commonly known as "Wine Yellow." Gan Ge (Pueraria Root) decoction is suitable, or Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Semen) decoction mixed with Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), or Sheng Liao Wu Ling Yin (Raw Material Five-Ingredient Decoction) with one qian of Gan Ge (Pueraria Root).
If Alcohol Jaundice transforms into abdominal distension, gradually progressing to edema of the face and feet, and eventually the whole body, Huo Xiang Pi Yin (Agastache Spleen Decoction) with three qian of Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) is suitable, or Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Mai [Dong/Mai Ya] (Ophiopogon Root/Malt - *character missing*) each half a qian.
Drinking and then sleeping allows Wine Toxicity to fumigate the Lung. Spleen Earth generates Lung Metal; the Lung is the child of the Spleen. When the child transfers disease, it attacks the mother. Hence, jaundice occurs. Furthermore, the Lung governs the skin of the body. Fumigated by wine toxicity, the pathology manifests externally on the skin as yellowing. Both explanations are valid. Treatment should address both Spleen and Lung. Huo Pi Yin (Agastache and Loquat Leaf Decoction - *Note: 'Pi' likely refers to Pi Ye*) is suitable.
Gu Dan (Grain Jaundice) results from starvation followed by overeating, causing Stomach Qi to steam and lead to yellowing. Dizziness occurs immediately after eating. Hong Wan Zi (Red Pills) are suitable.
Nv Lao Dan (Female Labor Jaundice) occurs when, after sexual activity, one is affected by Water-Dampness. The forehead becomes black, the body yellow, the lower abdomen feels urgent and full, and defecation is difficult. Boil one tuocuo (a small handful) of Da Mai (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) with one qian each of Hua Shi (Talcum) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
For various types of Jaundice presenting with bland taste, palpitations (Zheng Chong), tinnitus, and weak legs, treat as Deficiency. Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) is suitable, taken with Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill). Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) can also be used. Do not overuse Cold/Cooling agents to forcibly promote urination, lest Kidney Water become depleted. Over time, a black-yellow complexion will develop, becoming incurable.
Spleen injury causing Jaundice was mentioned earlier under the Jaundice syndrome section. Additionally, Summer-Heat Toxicity injuring the Spleen, leading to difficult urination, can also form Jaundice. Jian Mao Hua Tang (Mao Hua Decoction) mixed with Wu Ling Yin (Five-Ingredient Decoction) is suitable.
After various blood losses, a yellow complexion is common. Blood constitutes Ying (Nutritive Qi); a ruddy complexion indicates abundant Ying. Loss of blood reveals the yellow hue, similar to how grass and trees have green leaves in spring and summer but turn yellow in autumn, representing the difference between moistness and dryness. Yang Rong Tang (Nourish Ying Decoction), Zhi Gui Tang (Zhi Mu and Angelica Decoction - *Note: Zhi Gui usually refers to Zhi Shi and Dang Gui*), Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Ten Significant Great Tonifying Decoction) are suitable. If these hinder appetite, Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with one qian each of Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Bian Dou (Vigna Seed) is used. This is Huang Qi Si Jun Zi Tang (Astragalus Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), named Yi Gong San (Yi Gong Powder). Adding these two ingredients is also effective. There are cases of whole-body yellowing, but the yellowing does not extend to the eyes and ears.
Post-Malaria yellowing is common. Malaria is referred to as Spleen Cold; since the Spleen is diseased, the color appears on the face. Regulating the Spleen should be prioritized. Yi Gong San (Yi Gong Powder) with half a qian each of Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Bian Dou (Vigna Seed) is suitable. This applies to yellowing after various pains as well.
The Yellow Edema disease among farmers is caused by labor after full meals, leading to stagnant Spleen Qi. Yang Fa Shi Sheng Jin Wan (Master Yang's Golden Victory Pills) is suitable.
