(Attached: Pain of the Eyebrow Ridge)
There are two types of pain. The eyes belong to the Liver. One type is pain caused by Liver deficiency; upon seeing light, the bones around the eye sockets hurt severely. It is suitable to take Shengshu Dihuang Wan (Raw and Prepared Rehmannia Pill). Another type is stagnation of fluid in the Liver channel; when it occurs, there is pain in the eyebrow ridge, inability to open the eyes, symptoms are quiet during the day and severe at night. It is suitable to take Daotan Yin (Phlegm-Fluid Expelling Decoction), or Xiongxin Tang (Ligusticum and Asarum Decoction), removing tea leaves; or use Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction), swallowing Qingzhou Baiwanzi (Qingzhou White Pills), selecting medicines based on phlegm-fluid pathology.
Toothache. There are four conditions: Wind-Toxicity, Heat Stagnation, Dental Caries, and Kidney Deficiency. Before distinguishing the specific syndrome, Xiaofeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder) should be applied to the affected area for all conditions. For all syndromes, it is suitable to stir-fry Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) until blackened, three fen, and stir-fry Salt until one fen, grind them evenly, and apply as usual.
For toothache caused by Wind-Toxicity, cut Gleditsiae Fructus (Zaojiao) into inch-long segments, fill with salt, roast over fire until cooked, soak in boiling water, gargle, and spit out saliva. For gingival pain caused by Wind-Toxicity and Heat Stagnation attacking upwards, or if red flesh protrudes from the gum gaps, Xiaofeng San is suitable. Take after meals and before bed with tea. Additionally, decoct Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), and Vespa Nidus (Fengfang), etc., let cool, and gargle frequently.
If dental worms have emerged, leaving empty cavities that cause pain, this must be known. It is suitable to use a small amount of Frankincense (Ruxiang), roast over fire until soft, and fill the cavity.
If Heat Stagnation is severe, causing tooth swelling extending to the cheek and unbearable pain, Jinfeicao San (Boiling Herb Powder) is suitable. Remove Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), add Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe) in equal quantity.
For Kidney Deficiency causing floating teeth and severe pain, accompanied by aversion to cold and high fever, presenting a state resembling collapse, Anshen Wan (Kidney-Anchoring Pill) is suitable, interspersed with Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill).
For caries pain, grind one seed of Crotonis Fructus (Badou) thoroughly, mix with fine powder of Frankincense to form pills, and insert into the carious hole.
(Attached: Upper Jiao Congestion/Throat Pain)
Sore throat caused by Cold Damage has Yin and Yang syndromes, which have been discussed in detail in the sections on various injuries and Cold Damage syndromes. Here, we only discuss sore throats caused by miscellaneous diseases. Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) is suitable. For Heat-Toxicity attacking upwards, whether with or without ulcers, if Ganjie Tang is ineffective, add 1.5 qian of Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie) to Ganjie Tang, named Rusheng Tang (Like-Sage Decoction). Or, add 1 fen of Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao) and 0.5 fen of Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) to Rusheng Tang, or use Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Decoction). Still use Biyun San (Blue Cloud Powder), decoct slowly. Interspersedly swallow Yangzheng Dan (Nourishing Righteousness Pill) with salt water, and concurrently decoct Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), holding Ji Su Wan (Perilla Pill) in the mouth to dissolve.
For those with sore throat who worsen after taking cold-natured medicines, Ginger Juice is suitable. See the section on Hot Cough in the Cough chapter for details.
For internal heat manifesting in the Upper Jiao causing sore throat, it is suitable to use Cortex Phellodendri (Huangbai), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian), and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang) ground into powder, mixed with water, and applied to the heart region and the affected area. This comes from Ye's Formulary.
For sore throat caused by Heat Stagnation, or coughing with blood, Jinfeicao San is suitable, assisted by Zhensha Huatan Wan (Cinnabar Phlegm-Resolving Pill). For sore throat where various cold-natured medicines are ineffective, Zhinan Tang (Bitter Orange and Nanxing Decoction) is suitable.
Pain from Bi Syndrome of the Throat, with fullness and swelling preventing speech, and growths in the throat, is named Hou Feng (Throat Wind). Ganjie Tang is suitable. If Heat Stagnation is in the Upper Jiao, causing sore throat, dryness when swallowing dry substances compared to normal, and no saliva in the mouth and tongue upon waking, Rusheng Tang is suitable. Add 0.5 qian of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and 0.7 qian of Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), or assist with Biyun San and Ji Su Wan. For those with the above symptoms plus mental restlessness, Zhensha Wuling San (Cinnabar Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) is suitable. For all cases of upper congestion, crushed shell of Amomi Fructus (Suosha) should be burnt to ash retaining its nature, ground into powder, and taken with water.
