During the first childbirth, it is most taboo to ask whether the baby is male or female. This is to avoid the leakage of Qi due to words, or the stirring of anger (emotional disturbance) due to love or hatred [regarding gender], as both are prone to causing disease. Even if daughters are born consecutively, this is a common human circumstance.
Those who are fathers-in-law, mothers-in-law, and husbands should only use comforting words to soothe the woman. They must absolutely not sigh or lament, so as not to cause the woman to harbor resentment, leading to illness or even death. If one abandons or drowns a child because she is female, one will surely receive retribution in the form of extinction of one's lineage. One must cultivate virtue and await destiny.
Fainting and loss of consciousness due to excessive blood loss during labor, or death immediately after delivery, is named Blood Fainting (Xue Yun). It is suitable to use Xiong Gui Tang (Cnidium and Angelica Decoction). If postpartum collapse occurs, characterized by a pale face, closed eyes, open mouth, cold hands and feet, and subtle and minute pulses in all six positions, urgently use one liang of Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), decocted in water into a thick liquid for administration. Delaying treatment will be too late. If fainting is caused by excessive fire and rebellious blood, Qing Hun San (Clear Soul Powder) is suitable. If the patient does not regain consciousness, administer juice from Chinese chives mixed with vinegar. If still unconscious, urgently pinch the Renzhong (GV26) acupoint, pull the hair at the vertex of the head, and administer ginger juice mixed with infant urine; or take two qian of Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike) powder, mixed with infant urine for administration. If excessive blood loss leads to extreme deficiency-heat, blurred vision, coma, and cold extremities, Shen Gui Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Decoction) is suitable. If suddenly upon delivery the jaw locks, speech is confused, and the patient sees ghosts or spirits, this is敗血 (Stagnant Blood) attacking the heart; Miao Xiang San (Miraculous Fragrance Powder) is suitable. If sudden fainting occurs and there is no time to decoct medicine, heat an iron scale weight until red, place it in a vessel before the bed, pour vinegar onto it, and let the sour vapor enter the nose to awaken the patient; or have the patient slightly hold hot vinegar in the mouth to recover.
