When lying in bed after childbirth, thick mattresses should be used, with high pillows and cushions. The mother should not lie flat, to prevent the stagnation of lochia (postpartum discharge of blood and mucus); supine position is preferred over lateral position. Knees should be kept upright, while legs should not be extended. Eyes should be closed for quiet rest; extreme joy or anger must be strictly avoided. Deep sleep should also be avoided, as falling into deep slumber from exhaustion may cause Qi and Blood to rush upward and obstruct, leading to dizziness. Loud shouting should be avoided to prevent fright. Every day, gently massage from below the heart area down to the navel five to seven times; this will ensure the complete expulsion of residual blood, and can cease the next day. Regardless of whether there are pains or illnesses, it is advisable to decoct Motherwort Herb (Yimucao) and mix it with child's urine (Tongbian), taken several times a day (child's urine must be freshly collected and preferably clear). The four walls should be covered tightly without gaps to avoid wind-cold invasion. In summer, one must avoid seeking coolness by using fans, eating cold and hard foods, or sitting/lying in the draft. For the first hundred days, sexual intercourse is prohibited; violating this results in lifelong illness. Only after one full month (Bai Ri) can one comb hair and wash feet; otherwise, soreness and pain in the hands, feet, waist, and legs are inevitable. One must not live alone, to prevent deficiency-induced fright. Tongue scraping should be avoided to prevent damage to Heart Qi. Brushing teeth should be avoided to prevent counterflow of Blood and Qi. Only after one full month, when Qi and Blood have stabilized, can daily activities resume normally.
Within the first seven days postpartum, do not touch cold water, and do not wash the lower body. Do not comb hair to avoid exertion, do not rise early to avoid exposure to wind, and do not walk to avoid damaging sinews and bones. After seven days, warm water may be used to wash the lower body, but special care must be taken to prevent wind from entering the vaginal opening. During the confinement period, do not speak excessively, do not engage in women's household labor, and do not use cold water to wash hands and feet; even warm water should be used sparingly. Avoid fright, avoid anger, avoid overeating, and avoid sexual exertion; even within 120 days, mental and physical overexertion must be avoided. Do not eat heavy and turbid foods, which may obstruct meridians. Do not eat pungent and hot foods, which may cause reckless bleeding. Do not eat raw and cold foods, which may cause blood coagulation. Do not eat foods that promote digestion at the expense of dispersing Zheng Qi (Upright Qi), as they damage Qi and Blood. Do not drink pure alcohol excessively, to prevent confusion and errors in judgment. Do not consume too much salty food, to prevent the drying up of breast milk. Postpartum, one must avoid exposure to wind, and the vaginal opening requires particular protection; even after seven days, it must be covered tightly. The umbilical and abdominal areas should be kept warm with clothing. Even in summer, thick coverings are necessary; otherwise, abdominal coldness will lead to poor circulation of Qi and Blood and frequent pain.
