Approaching the fifth month of pregnancy, the pregnant woman may feel physically weak and debilitated. She may only perceive a sense of abdominal heaviness, excessive sleepiness, loss of appetite, and abdominal distension; Shoutai Yin (Slimming Fetus Decoction) is appropriate. If constitutionally weak due to endowment, resulting in fetal atrophy and poor growth caused by Blood deficiency, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Sharen (Amomi Fructus) is appropriate. If caused by Qi deficiency, Sijun Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Xiangfu and Sharen is appropriate. If caused by dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) added with Xiangfu and Sharen is appropriate. Ancients treating prenatal conditions often used Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Sharen together, taking advantage of one tonifying and one regulating Qi. Tonification makes Qi vigorous without the risk of miscarriage; regulating Qi harmonizes the flow without the worry of difficult labor. This is indeed an excellent method.
