After conception, one must absolutely refrain from hitting or scolding others. This is because when the Qi (vital energy) is harmonious, the fetus remains secure; when Qi rebels upward, fetal pathology occurs. Anger causes Qi stagnation and obstruction. If Liver Qi (Liver Qi) surges upward, it leads to vomiting and epistaxis (nosebleed), damaging the Spleen (Spleen) and Lung (Lung). If Liver Qi sinks downward, it results in metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding), leukorrhea (vaginal discharge), spontaneous abortion, or premature birth. Those who wish to bear good children must first nourish their Qi. When Qi is properly nourished, the child’s disposition will be gentle and compliant, possessing filial piety and fraternal duty, without eccentric or violent habits. As the saying goes, "Harmonious Qi brings auspiciousness," leading to family joy, all of which stems from prenatal education (Taijiao).
After conception, clothing should not be too warm; excessive warmth opens the pores (Qi-kai), making one susceptible to Wind-Cold (Wind-Cold pathogen). Food intake should not be excessive; overeating damages Shen (Spirit/Mind) and hinders fetal development and delivery. Alcohol consumption should not lead to intoxication; drunkenness disrupts nature, potentially causing the child to be licentious and violent. Moreover, alcohol disperses the blood vessels throughout the body, leading to various diseases. Regarding all medicinal herbs, it is crucial not to decoct them with wine. Do not casually take herbal decoctions or undergo acupuncture and moxibustion treatments. Avoid excessive physical labor and do not lie in bed too much; one must walk frequently. Do not climb to high toilets, enter rooms of women in labor, visit mourning households, or go to crowded, noisy places. Avoid climbing heights or traversing dangerous terrain for fear of falling and injury. Do not reach up high to fetch objects, as this may injure the fetus, causing the child to cry within the abdomen. Do not watch scenes of slaughter or vicious acts, nor construction work involving breaking ground or erecting wood. Do not view operas or images of ghosts and monsters; viewing these will cause fright, potentially leading to epilepsy (Epilepsy) in the child. Furthermore, avoid frequent bathing; excessive bathing suddenly opens the pores, inviting Wind-Cold and increasing the risk of miscarriage. These prohibitions are especially critical during early conception and near term. The Classics state: "Injury by blades damages the form; injury by mud blocks the orifices; injury by beating turns the complexion dark blue/black; binding causes limb contracture." In severe cases, it can even result in maternal death. Verification of these effects is as easy as turning a hand; how can one fail to be vigilant?
The fatness or thinness of the fetus is connected to the mother's Qi. Indulging in rich and strong-flavored foods often leads to a large fetus and difficult labor. Therefore, pregnant women should regulate their diet to be light rather than heavy, clear and void rather than turbid, and balanced rather than excessively cold or hot. However, wealthy families enjoy rich and sweet foods, and forcing them to live frugally is practically impossible. The following suitable items are listed after consideration:
Lotus seeds (Nelumbinis Semen), Gorgon fruit (Euryales Semen), Pine nuts (Pinii Semen), Cooked lotus root (Nelumbinis Rhizoma), Chinese yam (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Crucian carp (Carassii Auratus), Duck (Anseris Carcass), Perch (Lateolabracis Carnis), Eel (Monopteri Carnis), Paper fish (likely referring to a specific type of dried fish or jellyfish, contextually kept as 'Paper Fish'), Sea cucumber (Stichopodis), Dried mussels (Mytili Concha), Pork stomach (Sus Ventriculus), Bamboo shoots (Bambusae Shoots), Salted dried fish (Gadidae Salso-Siccus), Sesame oil (Sesami Oleum - detoxifies), Tofu skin (Fasciae Sojae Praeparata - induces labor/moves fetus).
These two items [Tofu skin and Sesame oil, or specifically Tofu skin given the context of 'slippery fetus'] should be taken in larger quantities near term.
