小轮薄者不堪,此肾气之外候也;声细而不振者不堪,此丹田之气本也;形体薄弱者不堪,此藏蓄之宫城也;
The way of human reproduction begins with seeking offspring, and the methods for seeking offspring do not exceed two key aspects: men nourishing their Jing (Essence) and women nourishing their Blood. When male Yang Essence is abundant and discharged without depletion, and female Yin Blood flows down at regular intervals without error, Yin and Yang interact smoothly, Essence and Blood combine and condense, leading to the formation of embryos and the proliferation of life. If Yang deficiency prevents it from descending to nourish Yin, or Yin deficiency prevents it from ascending to support Yang, Yin and Yang conflict, and Essence and Blood separate, resulting in infertility. The main therapeutic principle is: men should tonify their Essence and restrain their desires, ensuring the normal strength of sexual function; women should nourish their Blood and harmonize their Qi, ensuring menstruation occurs on time. Mutual cultivation between husband and wife is the path to having children. People in the world, failing to understand this, instead deduce interactions based on the Five Elements (Wu Xing), and seek supplementation through herbal medicines, allowing falsehood to overcome truth and human intervention to usurp nature. Consequently, although pregnancy may occur, fetal development often fails, and even if children are born, they frequently suffer from poor health and short lifespans.
Regarding the pulse for seeking offspring, primary attention is paid to the Chi (Cun Cun Kou position at the wrist). If the Right Chi pulse is excessively vigorous, it indicates hyperactive Ministerial Fire and a propensity for lust. If the Left Chi pulse is excessively vigorous, it indicates Yin deficiency, which is not auspicious. Only when the pulse is deep, slippery, and uniform is there an ease of generating new life. A faint and choppy pulse suggests clear/thin semen, while a slow pulse combined with this indicates extreme cold. If a faint and soggy pulse is seen, it indicates weakness during intercourse. For women unsuitable for childbirth, the Chi pulse is also typically choppy.
Those seeking offspring must first select a wife, just as a farmer must first select the land. Sandy and gravelly fields cannot be expected to yield rice and millet; similarly, how can one hope for excellent offspring from a woman with shallow fortune? Therefore, for the sake of descendants, selection is indispensable. Generally, a woman's constitution values stillness over agitation, dignity over frivolity, richness over thinness, and maturity over tenderness. Thus, those with short lips and small mouths are unsuitable; this relates to the anatomical location for offspring. Those with small ears and thin ear helices are unsuitable; this reflects external signs of Kidney Qi. Those with thin, weak, and unresonant voices are unsuitable; this reflects the root of Dantian Qi. Those with frail bodies are unsuitable; this reflects a weak "palace city" for storing reproductive essence. Those with very little appetite are unsuitable; this reflects a scarce source for transforming food into Blood and Qi. Those with dry hair and loose teeth are unsuitable; this indicates Liver Blood deficiency and Kidney Essence deficiency. Those with protruding eyes and sunken buttocks are unsuitable; this indicates that Zang organs fail to store essence and there will be no successors. Those with bluish discoloration around the Shan Gen (root of the nose) and lips/mouth are unsuitable; this indicates Yang failing to overcome Yin, leading to stagnation and rebellion in the Liver and Spleen. Those with tense, wiry, and choppy pulses are unsuitable; this indicates deficiency of True Yin, irregular menstruation, and a lack of vital energy. Others include unmarried girls whose Yin Qi is not yet complete, and women with excessive libido, who tend to bear daughters. Women with gentle temperaments find menstrual regulation easier; those with jealous temperaments often have irregular menstruation. Those with ugly appearances tend to have heavy bodies, while those with beautiful faces often have shallow fortune. Those with more flesh than bone have fat filling the uterus; those as thin as firewood have a uterus lacking blood. Furthermore, individuals with tiger-like heads, bear-like necks, bee-like eyes, jackal-like voices, wide faces, and vertical eyebrows often bring misfortune and conflict. Those who are泼悍 (violent and domineering), treacherous, sinister, or mean are all unfavorable for offspring. Those seeking offspring must urgently study these principles.
