The method for seeking offspring has no other techniques. It consists only of treating others with sincerity and performing good deeds extensively. Men should conserve Jing (Essence), and women should regulate their menstruation. The *Classic of Poetry* states: "If a woman is harmonious and peaceful, she will be joyful in having children." If either man or woman has illness, or if Qi and Blood are insufficient, regulating according to symptoms will invariably lead to conception. Regarding the pulse during pregnancy, if the Heart pulse at the left Cun position beats vigorously, it is an omen of pregnancy and bearing a child. Since the Heart governs Blood, a vigorous Heart pulse indicates abundant Blood, thus confirming pregnancy. If both Chi pulses at the wrists are vigorous, distinct from the Cun pulses, this also indicates pregnancy. If the pulse is smooth and rapid like a sparrow pecking, it is also a pregnancy pulse. This is because the menstrual channels are obstructed and flow ceases, causing the pulse to be rapid with intermittent pauses, indicating a fetus of several months. Some say that if both Cun pulses are floating and large, it presages two male children; if both hands' pulses are deep and solid, it presages two female children. If menstruation has ceased for three months, taking Cinnamomi Ramulus (Chuanxiong) powder decocted with Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Ai Ye) tea on an empty stomach, and feeling slight movement in the abdomen, indicates a fetus.
The way to conserve Essence first requires restraining desires, followed by taking medicine. For deficiency of True Water (Kidney Yin) with a weak left Chi pulse, use Liuwei Wan combined with Wuzi Yanzong Wan, or Zuogui Wan. For decline of True Fire (Kidney Yang) with a weak right Chi pulse, use Bawei Wan combined with Wuzi Yanzong Wan, or Yougui Wan. If both Chi pulses are weak, use Shibu Wan combined with Wuzi Yanzong Wan. For thin and non-coagulating semen, use Liuwei Wan combined with Wuzi Yanzong Wan, adding Bladder of Fish (Yubiao) and Deer Antler Glue (Lujiaojiao). For Qi deficiency unable to ejaculate far, Zanyu Dan is the primary formula.
The methods for regulating menstruation are found in the chapter on Menstruation.
For Blood Heat, use Yimu Shengjin Dan added with Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi) and Moutan Cortex (Danpi). For Blood Cold, use Yimu Shengjin Dan added with Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui). For Qi Stagnation with abdominal pain, use Siwu Tang added with Cyperi Rhizoma (Yanhusuo), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), or Tiaojing Yin. For Qi deficiency, use Siwu Tang added with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), and Astragali Radix (Huangqi). For simultaneous Qi and Blood deficiency, Yupin Zhu is the primary formula.
During pregnancy months, one should restrain sexual desire, eat bland food, avoid overexertion, and avoid excessive idleness. Daily walking activates the fetus; suppressing anger calms the nature. Naturally, birth and rearing become easy, and the child will be intelligent and long-lived. However, as the fetus remains in the womb for a long time, various conditions can cause disease. Listing its symptoms to show treatment methods:
Morning Sickness (Ezu) is caused by turbid Qi blocking the Zhongwan area, retaining phlegm leading to dizziness, vomiting, and fullness. Erchen Tang added with Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) is indicated. For Spleen deficiency, Liujunzi Tang added with Perillae Caulis (Sugeng), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), and Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) is used.
Restless Fetus (Taidong Bu'an) is due to careless daily life. Antai Yin is the primary formula.
Fetal Leakage (Tailou) is sudden vaginal bleeding; if blood drains completely, the fetus cannot be preserved. Siwu Tang added with Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) is used. If Blood deficient, add Poria (Fuling), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), and Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Aiye). For Qi deficiency sinking downward, Buzhong Yiqi Tang is used.
Fetal Distension (Zixuan) is the fetus pressing upward. Zisu Yin modified is used. In cases of rebellious Qi leading to fainting, named Zi Xuan, the condition is critical, and the aforementioned medicines are also used. For Spleen deficiency with Phlegm retention, Liujunzi Tang is used.
Fetal Growth Retardation (Tai Bu Zhang) is caused by the mother's chronic diseases. Wuwei Yigong San or Bazhen Tang is used.
Fetal Restlessness (Zifen) is mental restlessness and agitation, occurring mostly in the fourth and sixth months. For excess Fire causing restlessness, Danzhuye Tang is used. For Qi stagnation causing oppression, Erchen Tang added with Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Perillae Caulis (Sugeng), and Aurantii Fructus (Zhike) is appropriate.
Fetal Eclampsia (Zixian) is Blood deficiency with Wind invasion, suddenly causing locked jaw and opisthotonos. The condition is most acute. For Wind invasion, Lingyangjiao San settles it. If Liver Fire stirred by anger, Xiaoyao San is added. For rebellious fetal Qi, Zisu Yin is added.
Fetal Crying (Ziming) is described as the umbilical cord protruding from the infant's mouth and crying sounds within the abdomen. One must bend the waist to the ground, as if picking up an object. After one or two quarters of an hour, the mass returns to the infant's mouth, and it stops. Siwu Tang added with Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) and Poria (Fuling) is used to calm the fetal Qi.
Fetal Aphonia (Ziyin) occurs because the Kidney meridian connects to the root of the tongue; due to fetal Qi obstruction, speech is impossible. Medication is not required; speech returns naturally after delivery.
Dysuria (Xiaobian Butong) is due to Heat in the Small Intestine. Siwu Tang added with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie) is used. However, if the uterus presses down, disrupting the bladder ligaments, causing complete inability to pass urine, it is called Zhuanbao. The danger is swift. Fushengma Tang is used. Alternatively, Buzhong Yiqi Tang may be taken, followed by inducing vomiting.
Fetal Edema (Taishui Zhumang), named Zizhong, is caused by fetal encapsulation obstructing fluid flow. Wupi Yin added with Atractodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) and Poria (Fuling) is used. For Spleen deficiency unable to control water, Liujunzi Tang is used.
Spontaneous Lactation (Ru Zichu), named Ruqi, often results in infants who do not survive. Bazhen Tonics is used to tonify.
Heat Disease Damaging the Fetus refers to maternal fever damaging the fetus in the womb. Ancient formulas use Heishen San to purge, or Pingwei San added with Mirabilite (Puxiao) five qian to purge, which is more stable. If the mother's face is red and tongue blue, the fetus is already damaged. If the face is blue and tongue red, the mother is also difficult to save. Be cautious.
Miscarriage (Xiaochan) is attempting birth before term, generally caused by labor injury. Immediately use Antai Yin to stabilize the fetus. Post-miscarriage abdominal pain that refuses pressure indicates Blood Stasis. Danggui Zelang Tang is used.
Post-miscarriage continuous bleeding, or irritability, thirst, red face, and faint pulse indicate severe Qi and Blood deficiency. Bazhen Tang added with Roasted Ginger (Paojiang) is used to tonify. If abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea occur, it is Spleen and Stomach deficiency. Xiangsha Liujunzi Tang added with Ginger and Cinnamon is used.
