Strangulation by hanging, drowning, crushing by heavy objects, nightmare-induced syncope (syncope caused by fright or sleep disorders), death during difficult labor, and various conditions of sudden qi collapse can all be rescued to regain consciousness. The method is to twist Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) powder or Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zaojiao) powder into a thin strip and insert it into the nasal cavity to induce sneezing. Alternatively, use the white center of Allium fistulosum (Congbai) or Allium tuberosum (Jiubai), insert it several inches into the nasal cavity, pinch Renzhong (GV26), and pull the hair at the vertex; moxa-heat each side of the big toenail plate at a distance of approximately one leek leaf width, and additionally moxa-heat below the umbilicus.
Hanging: Quickly lift the patient, lower them to relieve neck tension, and do not cut the rope directly. Use a hand wrapped in clothing to block the anus, and for women, also plug the vagina, to prevent leakage of vital essence which would make rescue impossible. Lay the patient down flat. One person stands on both shoulders with their feet, while another tightly holds the hair without letting go. A third person rubs and corrects the neck and throat, and massages the chest and abdomen. A fourth person slowly flexes and extends the arms and legs. Four people each hold a reed tube to blow air into the ears and nose, while simultaneously covering the mouth. Once the eyes open and breathing becomes smooth, immediately administer ginger soup or rice gruel. For any condition of sudden collapse, if the area below the heart remains warm, survival is possible.
Drowning: After retrieval, place the patient prone on a wide bench with the head hanging down, supporting the abdomen with a living person lying supine underneath (Note: This description follows the original text literally). Alternatively, place the patient prone on a cow's back, pry the mouth open with a knife, place a chopstick horizontally to allow water to drain; elevate the feet several inches, wrap Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zaojiao) powder in cotton and insert it into the anus, and rub salt onto the umbilicus. Once all water is expelled, take dry soil from a wall, crush it finely, spread it on the ground, have the drowned person lie supine on it, bury their body, and moxa-heat the umbilicus. In winter, urgently change into warm clothes, cover the body with ash from the stove that has no fire, have four people blow air into the ears and nose, and administer ginger juice.
Crushing/Compression: Caused by being pressed by bricks, wood, stones, or falling from a height. If qi is severed, pry the mouth open and have someone urinate into the mouth; if they can swallow, they will survive. Take several liang of Fermented Soybean (Danshichu), decoct with water and wine, and administer. If blood attacks the heart, burn dried Lotus Leaf (Heye) to ash, mix with child's urine, and administer 3 qian, three times daily. Alternatively, administer hot wine. Crush and stir-fry garlic chives (Jiu) with roots, bind to the injured area. Heat an iron and apply as a hot compress.
Nightmare/Sleep Paralysis: Do not shout loudly approaching the patient. Instead, bite firmly on the heel and big toe, and spit frequently on the face. Keep the lamp lit if available; do not light one if absent. Blow Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) and Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zaojiao) powder into the nose; decoct peach branches and willow branches growing towards the east and administer the soup; or take 2 qian of Hearth Earth (Zaoxintu), grind it, and swallow with well water, followed by blowing air into the ears and nose with a reed tube.
Ghost Strike (Guoji), Guest Chou (Keyu), and all other sudden deaths: Crush Acorus Tatarinowii (Changpu) root or garlic chive (Jiu) root (use root in winter) to extract juice and administer into the mouth and nose. Alternatively, crush dried Acorus Tatarinowii (Changpu) into powder, blow into the nose, and swallow with water. Additionally, apply mud from the bottom of a well to the whole body and eyes, have someone lower their head into the well and call out the name. If abdominal pain feels like knife stabbing, decoct mugwort (Aiye) and administer. For vomiting of parasites, moxa-heat behind the big toenail plate for fourteen moxa cones.
Freezing to Death: Urgently change into warm clothes worn by a living person. Heat rice or stove ash, place in a bag, and apply as a hot compress to the heart region; replace when cold. Frequently administer hot wine, ginger soup, and rice gruel. Wrap tightly in felt or straw mats. Two people should gently roll the body until limbs become warm and life returns. Do not expose to open fire. Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill), mixed with ginger soup and wine, is excellent.
Heat Stroke (Zhongre): Move to a shady place. Pile hot earth around the umbilicus. Grind human urine, hot earth, and garlic together, and administer with water (see Summer Heat chapter).
Obstetric Emergencies/Blood Syncope: Rescue and treatment require extreme quietness. Shouting and noise will cause death (see Postpartum chapter).
