This condition is contagious among fathers and sons, brothers, and husbands and wives, persisting through generations, even leading to the extinction of a family. This is truly due to "labor worms" (pathogenic parasites) emerging from the dead and entering the living. Various medical texts have depicted their forms, stating that they change with each generation, totaling nine types. Those with weak constitutions must be especially vigilant in prevention and avoidance. Wanbing Jiedu Yushu Dan (Prescription for Detoxifying All Diseases, Jade Pivot Pill; see section on Gu Poison) is used to treat Chuan Shi Lao (Transmitted Corpse Consumption, i.e., tuberculosis or similar chronic consumptive diseases). Take one pill, grind it when the rooster crows (early morning), and take it orally. Wait for the expulsion of foul matter; this matter may have shape, or resemble tangled hair or red silk. Then resume diet. If not expelled, take again early the next morning, until expulsion occurs. Additionally, eat one hundred Feizi (Chinkapin seeds) on an empty stomach to kill parasites.
Another method for corpse worms: Xionghuang (Realgar, 1 liang, prepared by water flotation) and Songxiang (Pine Rosin, 1 liang), melted and mixed into pills the size of lotus seeds. Swallow one pill at dawn; after seven days, all worms will be expelled. Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) taken with decoction made from Shiliupi (Pomegranate Rind), Tao Zhi (Peach Twig), Liu Zhi (Willow Twig), Mei Zhi (Plum Twig), Sang Zhi (Mulberry Twig), Qinghao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae), Guijiu (Radix Paris Polyphyllae), and Chijian (Rhizoma Gastrodiae).
Another method: Taoren (Persicae Semen, 120 grains, soaked and peeled), pounded and formed into pills. Take with water at dawn until finished, then drink alcohol until drunk. If not expelled, take again. Avoid meat for one hundred days.
For corpse worms and Gu Zheng (Bone-steaming fever, typical of tuberculosis): Baibu (Stemonae Radix, 1 jin, stir-fried with wine) and Qinghaozi (Fructus Artemisiae Annuae, 8 liang) are powdered and formed into honey pills. Take one hundred pills each morning and evening with rice gruel. Reduce dosage if diarrhea occurs.
The Classics state: "When internal essence is depleted and reversal occurs, aphonia and paralysis result, all due to Kidney deficiency." (Paralysis refers to loss of function). The Heart is the master of voice/sound, the Lung is the gate of sound, and the Kidney is the root of sound. The tongue is the sprout of the Heart; thus, when Heart Qi fails, the tongue cannot move to produce speech. However, there are cases of sudden wind-pathogen invasion causing throat closure, cases of vocal cord injury from arguing and shouting, and cases of qi depletion from excessive singing. Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire can all interfere with voice, but these are easy to treat. Only those caused by excessive alcohol and sexual activity, damaging the Kidneys so they cannot grasp Qi and return it to its origin, causing Qi to rush to the throat, resulting in coughing, phlegm, wheezing, and distension, with various diseases mixing to cause Qi deficiency and aphonia—commonly known as "Mute Consumption"—are incurable even by divine beings. A floating-tight pulse indicates Wind-Cold; a flooding-large pulse indicates Fire; a slippery pulse indicates Phlegm; a weak pulse indicates Qi deficiency. Only a fine-rapid or rapid-choppy pulse indicates a critical prognosis.
Main Prescription: Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Hezi (Chebulae Fructus, roasted, using only the peel, equal parts). Add Dengxincao (Junci Medullia) twisted branches, decoct in water, and take after meals.
If Wind-Cold: In winter, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Xingren (Persicae Semen), with a small amount of Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); in summer, add Zisu (Perillae Folium), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), and Qianhu (Peucedani Radix). If Phlegm: add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhuli (Nashi Bamboo Sap), and a little Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice). If Fire: add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Lianlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). If Cough: add Jinfeicao (Boerhaviae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus). If Sore Throat: add Shangen (likely referring to Shandougen or Shegan, kept as original text), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), and Niubang (Arctii Fructus). If Heat-Phlegm obstruction prevents voice: induce vomiting with salt water. If Constipation: use Dachaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction). If Dampness causes aphonia: use Buhuanjin Zhengqi San (Golden Exchange Upright Qi Powder; both see Shanghan section). If Wind causes aphonia: add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus). If excessive Phlegm: decoct Gancao, Jiegeng, and Hezi, and swallow Guntan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill; see Phlegm section).
Longnao Gao (Borneol Ointment): Treats aphonia due to singing/shouting injury, and various types caused by Phlegm-Fire. Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium, 4 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (each 2.5 liang), Baiyaojian (Myrobalan Fermented Pill, 2 liang; if unavailable, use Wubeizi (Terminalia Chebulae Reticulata)), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.5 liang), Hezi pi (Chebulae Fructus Pericarpium), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, steamed with wine while hot) (each 1 liang). Powder them, mix with egg white, and hold in mouth to dissolve before sleep.
Suyin Tang (Voice-Suppressing Decoction): Treats all Phlegm-Fire and Laozhai (Tuberculosis) causing aphonia. Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Fuling (Poria) (each 1 qian), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 7 fen), Xingren (Persicae Semen, 7 grains, crushed). Take a ball of Jinzhugu (Bamboo Residue scraped from Golden Bamboo), Pi Quyi (Bamboo Interspace Membrane, 1 qian), Zhuye (Bambusa Leaves, 10 pieces). Decoct in water, add Zhuli (Nashi Bamboo Sap) and take.
Xingren Jian (Almond Decoction): Treats cough with inability to produce voice. Xingren (Persicae Semen, soaked, peeled, core removed, pounded to paste), Fengmi (Honey), Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice), Shatang (Rock Sugar) (each 1 zhan), Sangpi (Mori Cortex, remove red skin, stir-fried), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Bei Wuwei (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Ziwan Rong (Asteli Radix) (each 1 liang), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Kuandonghua (Farfarae Flos) (each 5 qian). Cut the herbs, add five bowls of water, decoct until half remains, strain; add almond, ginger, sugar, and honey, decoct over low heat until two bowls remain. Take over two days and nights.
