(Attachment: Yin Swelling)
The Classics state: When Lung transfers cold to Kidney, it is named Yong Shui (Gushing Water). The presentation resembles a bladder wrapped in fluid, or generalized edema and fullness; rapid walking produces a gurgling sound in the abdomen. In all cases of water qi disorder, slight swelling appears first under the eyes. The body floats with shiny skin; pressing creates a pit that fills immediately upon lifting the hand. Upward, there is panting, coughing, and shortness of breath; downward, both feet and knees swell, and urination and defecation are scanty, astringent, and difficult. All these result from Spleen deficiency failing to control Kidney water, causing water qi to act recklessly and soak into the muscles. Because Spleen is deficient, Lung Metal fails to receive nourishment from its mother (Spleen Earth), and Liver Wood, having nothing to fear, comes to insult Earth, thereby further weakening the Spleen. When Earth is weak, Water becomes stronger, so edema is not easy to dissipate. Ancient formulas mostly used purgative agents, which merely attack the branch (symptoms). Treatment method: One must nourish Spleen Earth, sending up essence and qi to fulfill the function of transportation and transformation; protect Lung Qi to descend and open the channels for渗泄 (percolation/drainage), expelling turbid pathogens. The clearer parts revert to become Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids; the turbid parts are expelled upward as sweat and downward as urine, thus dispersing the pathogen. A surging and rapid pulse indicates Heat; a deep and slow pulse indicates Cold. A floating and large pulse is favorable (Shun); a deep and thin pulse is unfavorable (Ni).
Main Formula: Xiang Ru (Elsholtzia Herb, selecting large leaves), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean), Sang Bai Pi (Morus Root Bark), Bai Chou (Bai Tou Neng/White Morning Glory Seed), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian); Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Skin), Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (each 8 fen); Hua Shi (Talcum) (1.5 qian). Add Jiao Mu (Phyllanthi Fructus Ophthalmicus) and Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla), decoct with water and take orally.
Modifications are similar to those for abdominal distension mentioned previously; Wu Zi Wu Pi Yin (Five Seeds and Five Peels Decoction) and Shen You Wan (Divine Protection Pill) can be used concurrently.
Fu Ling San (Poria Powder): Treats various types of Qi swelling.
Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Wan Hua (Daphne Genkwa Flower, stir-fried with vinegar), Yu Li Ren (Pruni Semen), Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Fructus), Han Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Ben Cao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 3.5 qian); Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white part removed), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Bing Lang (Areca Seed), Qu Mai (Polygoni Avicularis Herba) (each 5 qian); Hua Shi (Talcum), Da Ji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix) (each 7.5 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian each time. Mix with decoction of Sang Bai Pi (Morus Root Bark) on an empty stomach. Continue until greenish-black watery stool resembling rotten mutton fat is discharged. Avoid salt and soy sauce for 100 days; do not take excessively.
Dang Gui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder): Edema often arises because Kidney Water fails to nurture Heart Fire, leaving Earth without nourishment. Water overflows and floods, penetrating collaterals and meridians, manifesting as edema.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Skin), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Bing Lang (Areca Seed), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Zi Su (Perillae Folium) (equal parts).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Simple Prescriptions for Treating Edema:
1. Grind Xiang Ru (Elsholtzia Herb) into powder (further boil Xiang Ru decoction to make paste), form into small pills, take three times daily.
2. Cucumber (one piece, cut open but keep seeds), half boiled in vinegar, half boiled in water, eat on an empty stomach.
3. Dates (one jin), place in a pot with water four fingers deep, spread Da Ji root seedlings (one liang) on top, boil until dry, remove Da Ji and eat dates.
4. Ku Hu Lu Zi (Bitter Bottle Gourd Seed), stir-fry and grind into powder, take 2 qian each time, wash down with Chen Pi and Mu Tong decoction or wine.
5. One pig kidney, sliced into seven pieces, sprinkle with 1 fen of Gan Suan powder (Kansui Radix), wrap in wet paper, bake until cooked, and eat at once.
6. Gua Di powder (2 fen), insufflate into nostrils, three times daily. If not cured, take Huang Qin powder (5 qian) decocted in water.
7. Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), boiled in vinegar and ground into powder, formed into pills with vinegar paste.
8. Ma Chi Xian (Portulacae Herba), cook with a small amount of Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa Japonica Group) in sauce for eating.
