(From *Suwen: Yipian Cifa Lun* [Plain Questions: Lost Chapter on Needling Methods])
The Yellow Emperor asked, saying: The needling for ascending and descending aims to grasp their essentials. I wish to hear about the situation where the Si Tian (Heavenly Qi presiding over the year) fails to migrate to its proper position, causing the qi governing transformation to lose its regular administration. Consequently, the transformations of all things may become erroneous, leading to diseases among the people. Can these be prevented beforehand? To save the multitude, I wish to hear your explanation. (Since there is an abnormality in the qi, preventive measures should be taken.)
Qibo bowed twice and replied: Your question is most thorough! You have spoken of profound principles. Your sage-like compassion desires to save the living beings. I will then fully expound this method, which can clarify the subtle mysteries. ("Shen" means to elucidate; "Dong" means profound/hidden.)
If Tai Yang (Solar Cold-Water Qi) re-manifests, then Jue Yin (Jueyin Wind-Wood Qi) cannot migrate to its proper position. Failure to migrate causes the righteous qi to stagnate above. One should drain the Ying-Spring point of the Foot Jueyin meridian. (In Chen-Xu years, after Tai Yang presides, Jue Yin succeeds it. If cold-water qi recedes but then re-manifests, the Jue Yin of Si-Hai years cannot migrate to its position, wind transformation does not occur, and Wood qi becomes depressed and stagnant above. People suffer from Liver disorders, so one should drain the Ying-Spring point of the Foot Jueyin meridian, i.e., Xingjian [LR2]. Needle depth 6 fen, retain for 7 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
If Jue Yin re-manifests, then Shao Yin (Shaoyin Fire-Qi) cannot migrate to its proper position. Failure to migrate causes qi to stagnate above. One should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin. (In Si-Hai years, after Jue Yin presides, Shao Yin succeeds it. If wind qi recedes but then re-manifests, the Shao Yin of Zi-Wu years cannot migrate to its position, fire transformation does not occur, and heat qi becomes depressed and stagnant above. People suffer from Heart Master disorders, so one should drain the Ying-Spring point of the Pericardium meridian, i.e., Laogong [PC8]. Needle depth 3 fen, retain for 6 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
If Shao Yin re-manifests, then Tai Yin (Taiyin Damp-Earth Qi) cannot migrate to its proper position. Failure to migrate causes qi to remain stagnant above. One should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Foot Taiyin meridian. (In Zi-Wu years, after Shao Yin presides, Tai Yin succeeds it. If Monarch Fire qi re-manifests, the Tai Yin of Chou-Wei years cannot migrate to its position, rain transformation does not occur, and Earth qi remains stagnant above. People suffer from Spleen disorders, so one should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Foot Taiyin meridian, i.e., Dadu [SP2]. Needle depth 3 fen, retain for 7 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
If Tai Yin re-manifests, then Shao Yang (Shaoyang Ministerial Fire Qi) cannot migrate to its proper position. Failure to migrate causes qi to be obstructed and unconnected. One should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Hand Shaoyang meridian. (In Chou-Wei years, after Tai Yin presides, Shao Yang succeeds it. If dampness re-manifests, the Shaoyang of Yin-Shen years cannot migrate to its position, fire transformation does not occur, and heat qi becomes depressed and stagnant. People suffer from Sanjiao disorders, so one should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Hand Shaoyang meridian, i.e., Yemen [TE2]. Needle depth 2 fen, retain for 3 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
If Shao Yang re-manifests, then Yang Ming (Yangming Dry-Metal Qi) cannot migrate to its proper position. Failure to migrate causes qi to fail to connect upwards. One should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Hand Taiyin meridian. (In Yin-Shen years, after Shao Yang presides, Yang Ming succeeds it. If Ministerial Fire re-manifests, the Yang Ming of Mao-You years cannot migrate to its position, metal transformation does not occur, and dryness qi becomes depressed and stagnant. People suffer from Lung disorders, so one should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Hand Taiyin meridian, i.e., Yuji [LU10]. Needle depth 2 fen, retain for 3 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
If Yang Ming re-manifests, then Tai Yang cannot migrate to its proper position. Failure to migrate causes the qi to be blocked again. One should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Foot Shaoyin meridian. (In Mao-You years, after Yang Ming presides, Tai Yang succeeds it. If dryness re-manifests, the Tai Yang of Chen-Xu years cannot migrate to its position, water transformation does not occur, and cold qi blocks again. People suffer from Kidney disorders, so one should needle the Ying-Spring point of the Foot Shaoyin meridian, i.e., Ran Gu [KI2]. Needle depth 3 fen, retain for 3 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
The Emperor said: Regarding the failure to migrate forward, I understand the key to unblocking it. I now wish to hear about the failure to retreat. How can we reduce the excess, preventing errors? Can this be made clear?
Qibo said: When qi is excessive and continues to manifest as the regular command, this is called "not passing the position." (The numerical duration of qi is excessive and does not retreat, so it continues to manifest as the regular command, and the old and new qi cannot succeed each other at their positions.) This prevents the Di Qi (Earthly Qi) from undergoing subsequent transformation. The new Si Tian cannot migrate to its proper position, so the old qi continues to manifest its commands as before. (If Heavenly Qi does not retreat, Earthly Qi cannot transform subsequently. Thus, the Si Tian of the new year cannot migrate to its position and still manifests the orders of the old year.)
In Si-Hai years, if the heavenly numbers are excessive, Jue Yin does not retreat. Wind moves above, and Wood transformation spreads across the sky. (Because in Zi-Wu years, the orders of Si-Hai are still executed, heat transformation does not occur, and wind instead becomes a disaster.) One should needle the He-Sea point of the Foot Jueyin meridian. (Ququan [LR8], needle depth 6 fen, retain for 7 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi. Note: The text above mentions "re-manifestation," implying that old qi arrives again, depressing new qi. Once depression disperses, disease is removed, so one needles the meridian of the new qi. Below, regarding "failure to retreat," it implies old qi is excessive and requires draining to remove. Once old evil retreats, new righteous qi is established, so one needles the meridian of the old qi. These two treatments differ, each having deep significance.)
In Zi-Wu years, if the heavenly numbers are excessive, Shao Yin does not retreat. Heat moves above, and residual fire transformation spreads across the sky. (Because in Chou-Wei years, the orders of Zi-Wu are still executed, rain transformation does not occur, and heat qi still governs.) One should needle the He-Sea point of the Hand Jueyin meridian. (Quze [PC3], needle depth 3 fen, retain for 7 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
In Chou-Wei years, if the heavenly numbers are excessive, Tai Yin does not retreat. Dampness moves above, and rain transformation spreads across the sky. (Because in Yin-Shen years, the governance of Chou-Wei is still executed, fire qi does not occur, and dampness still spreads across the sky.) One should needle the He-Sea point of the Foot Taiyin meridian. (Yinlingquan [SP9], needle depth 5 fen, retain for 7 breaths, until moving qi arrives, then quickly withdraw.)
In Yin-Shen years, if the heavenly numbers are excessive, Shao Yang does not retreat. Heat moves above, and fire transformation spreads across the sky. (Because in Mao-You years, the governance of Yin-Shen is still executed, fire still spreads across the sky, and metal transformation does not occur.) One should needle the He-Sea point of the Hand Shaoyang meridian. (Tianjing [TE10], needle depth 3 fen, retain for 7 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
In Mao-You years, if the heavenly numbers are excessive, Yang Ming does not retreat. Metal moves above, and dryness transformation spreads across the sky. (Because in Chen-Xu years, the orders of Mao-You are still executed, dryness still spreads across the sky, and cold transformation does not occur.) One should needle the He-Sea point of the Hand Taiyin meridian. (Chize [LU5], needle depth 3 fen, retain for 3 breaths, and quickly withdraw upon arrival of qi.)
In Chen-Xu years, if the heavenly numbers are excessive, Tai Yang does not retreat. Cold moves above, biting cold, and water transformation spreads across the sky. (In Si-Hai years, the orders of Chen-Xu are still executed, cold qi spreads across the sky, and wind transformation does not occur.) One should needle the He-Sea point of the Foot Shaoyin meridian. (Yingu [KI10], needle depth 4 fen, retain for 3 breaths, until moving qi arrives, then quickly withdraw.)
Thus, when Heaven and Earth qi are reversed, transformations become abnormal and cause diseases among the people. By using this method of needling, one can preemptively calm the afflictions. ("An Ge qie" refers to affliction/suffering.)
