*Suwen Yipian: Cifa Lun* (Lost Chapter of *Suwen*: Treatise on Needling Methods):
Huangdi asked, "I have heard that when the five plagues (*Wuyi*) arrive, they are all contagious. Regardless of age, the symptoms are similar. If no treatment is provided, how can one prevent transmission?" (*Wuyi* refers to the epidemic qi generated by the Five Movements and Six Qi; see detailed discussion in Section 41 of the 'Yunqi Category'. This text originates from the same chapter as the original source and should be cross-referenced. 'How to prevent transmission' means desiring to stop its contagion.)
Qibo replied, "Those who do not get infected possess righteous qi (*Zhengqi*) within, so evil qi (*Xieqi*) cannot invade. Avoid the toxic vapors; since they enter through the Heavenly Nostril (*Tianbing*, i.e., the nose), let them exit through the same path. When the qi emerges from the brain, it will not be invaded by evil." (Epidemic pathogens are heavenly evil qi. If one's internal righteous qi is solid, evil qi cannot invade, hence no infection. *Tianbing* refers to the nose, which receives heavenly qi, thus called Heavenly Nostril; Laozi referred to it as the Mysterious Female (*Xuanni*), sharing this meaning. Qi comes from emptiness and should return to emptiness; thus, avoid toxic vapors entering via the nose and let them exit. Since qi connects to the nose, and the nose connects to the brain, spreading through meridians causes contagion. 'Qi emerging from the brain' refers to sneezing or opening the nostrils to expel evil, allowing toxic vapors to dissipate.)
When qi emerges from the brain, first visualize the heart like the sun. (The sun represents solar yang qi, corresponding to the human heart. Visualizing the heart like the sun preserves one's righteous qi and strengthens spirit, preventing evil invasion.)
Before entering a plague room, first visualize green qi emanating from the liver, moving left to the East, transforming into forests and trees; (Wherever the mind goes, qi follows. Visualization focuses the spirit and strengthens qi. Moving left to the East and transforming into trees strengthens Liver qi.) Next, visualize white qi emanating from the lungs, moving right to the West, transforming into weapons and armor; (This strengthens Lung qi.) Next, visualize red qi emanating from the heart, moving south and upward, transforming into bright flames; (This strengthens Heart qi.) Next, visualize black qi emanating from the kidneys, moving north and downward, transforming into water; (This strengthens Kidney qi.) Next, visualize yellow qi emanating from the spleen, residing in the Center, transforming into earth. (This strengthens Spleen qi.) After visualizing the five colored qi protecting the body, visualize the head shining brightly like the Big Dipper (*Beidou*), then one may enter the plague room. ('Huanghuang' describes a radiant appearance. Epidemics spread rapidly, so such caution is necessary.)
Another method: On the day of the Spring Equinox (*Chunfen*), perform expectoration before sunrise. (Old annotations state: Decoct *Polygalae Radix* (*Yuanzhi*) with the heart removed, drink two cups, and induce vomiting; this prevents infection.)
Another method: After the Rain Water (*Yushui*) solar term, bathe three times with medicinal herbs to induce sweating. (This involves bathing three times in decoctions of herbs that dispel evil and scatter toxins to release sweat.)
Another method: The Little Golden Pill Formula (*Xiao Jindan Fang*). Take two taels of Cinnabar (*Chensha*), one tael of Arsenic Trioxide powder prepared by water-grinding (*Xionghuang*), one tael of Realgar leaf powder (*Cihuang*), and half a tael of Purple Gold (*Zijin*, gold foil). (Grind together until fine.) Place them in a porcelain jar (*Hezi*), seal it tightly externally, dig a pit one chi deep, compact the earth firmly. Do not use a furnace; no other processing is needed. Fire with twenty jin of fuel for calcination (*Jiu*). Complete in seven days (keep the fire burning continuously). Wait seven days after cooling to retrieve. On the next day, remove the contents, bury the medicine in the ground for seven days, retrieve it, grind it counter-clockwise (*Shunri*) for three days, refine white sand honey to form pills the size of *Clerodendrum* seeds (*Wutongzi*). Every day, face east and inhale one breath of solar qi, swallow one pill with ice water, harmonizing the qi while swallowing. Taking ten pills ensures no epidemic interference. (*Hezi* refers to ceramic jars. Grinding counter-clockwise means rotating to the left. Note: These words from the lost chapter were added by later authors; the methods are not ancient and should not be trusted blindly. My own plague prevention methods are in the first chapter of the 'Yin-Yang Category'; consult both.)
