璋。备察诸义,固已详尽;然多彼此矛盾,难以凭据。若其不易之理,则在阴阳二字。以左右分阴阳,则左为阳右为阴;
(From *Suwen: Pingren Qixiang Lun* and *Yinyang Bie Lun*)
If the Hand-Shaoyin pulse in a woman is markedly vigorous and slippery, it indicates pregnancy. (*Suwen: Pingren Qixiang Lun*. The Hand-Shaoyin pulse refers to the Heart pulse. *Ma Yao Jing Wei Lun* states: "At the upper level of the cun position, the lateral side on the left corresponds to the Heart." Therefore, the Heart pulse should be palpated at the left Cun position. "Vigorous" (Dong Shen) refers to a smooth and slippery quality. The Heart governs blood generation; abundant blood is necessary to nourish the fetus. When a woman's Heart pulse is vigorous and slippery, it results from abundant blood, thus indicating pregnancy. Qixuanzi stated: "The Hand-Shaoyin pulse refers to the depression behind the palm, where pulsation is felt when pressing near the little finger." This refers to the Heart meridian, specifically the Shenmen acupoint (Shenmen), which is a sound interpretation; however, based on my clinical experience, the left Cun position should also respond. "Ren" is synonymous with "Ren" (pregnancy).)
When the Yin pulse beats vigorously and differs distinctly from the Yang pulse, it is called having a child. (*Suwen: Yinyang Bie Lun*. Here, "Yin" refers to the Hand-Shaoyin pulse mentioned earlier, or may also include the Foot-Shaoyin pulse. This is because the Heart governs blood, and the Kidney governs the uterus; both are organs primarily responsible for gestation. "Bo" means the pulse strikes against the fingers. "Yang Bie" implies that although the Yin pulse feels vigorous like a Yang pathogen, its beating is smooth and slippery, inherently not a pathological pulse. Instead, it shows a harmonious image where Yang appears within Yin, termed "Yin Bo Yang Bie". *Fuzhong Lun* asks: "How do we know a woman is about to give birth?" The answer is: "The body has symptoms but no pathogenic pulses." This conveys the same meaning. Wang Shuhe's *Mai Jing* states: "If the Chi pulse remains unceasing upon pressure, it is the method for diagnosing pregnancy." Hua Bolin stated: "If the pulses at all three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) are equal in floating and sinking depth, there are no other diseases, yet menstruation has ceased, it is pregnancy." I observe that "Ren Zi" (pregnant child) shares the meaning of "You Zi" (having a child), serving as a general term for both men and women in this context. Since the classic text discusses conception, it uses "Zi" for both genders; it does not mean "Zi" applies only to males while excluding females. Later interpretations claiming this refers exclusively to males are incorrect. However, since the classic text does not distinguish between sexes, how can one differentiate? Examining Wang Shuhe's *Mai Jing*: "Rapid pulse on the left indicates a male; rapid pulse on the right indicates a female." It further states: "Deep and solid pulse on the left indicates a male; floating and large pulse on the right indicates a female." Also: "Chi pulse enlarged on the left indicates a male; enlarged on the right indicates a female." And: "Obtaining the Taiyin pulse indicates a male; obtaining the Taiyang pulse indicates a female; Taiyin pulse is deep, Taiyang pulse is floating." Subsequent discussions on pregnancy pulses generally adhere to these principles. Later, Hua Bolin stated: "Large and vigorous Chi pulse on the left indicates a male; deep and solid pulse on the right indicates a female." Xu Donggao of recent times stated: "To distinguish between male and female, one must examine Yin and Yang. If the Lung pulse on the right is strong, showing more Yin characteristics, it indicates a daughter (playing with tiles); if the left Chi pulse is strong, showing more Yang characteristics, it indicates a son (playing with jade)." While examining all these theories is thorough, they often contradict each other and are difficult to rely upon. If there is an immutable principle, it lies in the concept of Yin and Yang. Differentiating by left and right: Left is Yang, Right is Yin. Differentiating by Cun and Chi: Cun is Yang, Chi is Yin. Differentiating by pulse morphology: Vigorous, deep, and solid pulses are Yang; weak, floating, and choppy pulses are Yin. Generally, Yang-excess pulses indicate a male, and Yin-deficiency pulses indicate a female. This constitutes a fixed theory. Nevertheless, one must still observe the strength, age, and constitution of the pregnant woman, as well as whether her habitual pulse favors the left or right, and whether the Cun or Chi positions are naturally strong or weak, to fully grasp the subtleties.)
