The Qi of Earth harmonizes with the Wood transformation. (The livestock are cattle and dogs. Cattle belong to Earth, dogs to Wood; their breeding reflects the harmony of Earth and Wood.) The fruits are dates and plums. Dates belong to Earth, plums to Wood. The colors are black, cyan, and greenish-black. Black represents Water, cyan represents Wood, and the presence of these three colors indicates that Earth overcomes Water and harmonizes Wood. The flavors are sweet, salty, and sour (the principle is the same as above). The seasonal image is Late Summer. Phenomena such as clouds, rain, dimness, and dust all share the transformation of Late Summer. The corresponding meridians are the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. These two meridians correspond to the Qi of Earth. The corresponding organs are the Spleen and Kidney (Spleen Earth overcomes Kidney Water). The corresponding animals are hairy creatures. When Earth Qi is abundant, hairy creatures undergo transformation accordingly. The corresponding objects have flesh and pits/kernels, reflecting the transformation of both Earth and Wood. Diseases manifest as abdominal fullness and inability to move the limbs. When Evil Qi of Earth is excessive, it causes damp accumulation and stagnation, leading to such symptoms. Note: In years Jia-Zi, Jia-Wu, Jia-Yin, and Jia-Shen, the upper movement is Fire (Zheng); in Jia-Chen and Jia-Xu, it is Water (Yu). These are not mentioned here because they cannot invade Earth, so they are omitted. Sudden strong winds arrive, and evil pathogens damage the Spleen. When Earth Qi reaches its extreme, Wood Qi returns to compensate, causing such changes; thus, the evil pathogen damages the Spleen.
The cycle of Firm Completion (Jian Cheng) is called Gathering and Pulling Back. This refers to the excess of Metal, known as Jian Cheng, occurring in Geng years (Yang Metal). When Metal is dominant, the Qi of Gathering acts strongly, hence "Gathering and Pulling Back." "Pulling back" signifies Yin abundance and Yang decline, where all things retreat and withdraw. The Heaven Qi is pure, and the Earth Qi is bright (Metal Qi is clear). Yang Qi follows behind, while Yin Qi governs transformation (Follow means to be behind). Dryness exercises its administration, and objects complete their formation. When Dryness exercises its administration, the Qi transformation becomes firm, thus governing the completion of all things. The Qi of Gathering spreads extensively, but the Transformation Qi does not reach its end. Because the Gathering Qi of Metal is strong and appears early, the Transformation Qi of Earth cannot complete its term. "Qia" means mild and moist. Its outcome is harvest; its Qi is diminished; its administration is solemn; its command is sharp and cutting. Its dynamic manifestations include sudden breakage and skin ulcers/infectious diseases. "Sudden breakage" results from excess Metal Qi; "ulcers and infectious diseases" refer to skin ailments. Its virtue is mist, dew, and desolation (a clear and肃 [solemn] transformation). Its change is withering and falling due to killing frost (the execution of killing commands). The grains are rice and millet. Rice belongs to Metal, millet to Fire; Metal harmonizes with Fire for transformation. The livestock are chickens and horses (Metal and Fire livestock breed in harmony). The fruits are peaches and apricots (Metal harmonizes with Fire fruits). The colors are white, cyan, and cinnabar red. Excess Metal overcomes Wood and harmonizes Fire, hence these three colors appear. The flavors are pungent, sour, and bitter (representing Metal, Wood, and Fire). The seasonal image is Autumn. Phenomena such as dryness, clarity, smoke, and dew all share the transformation of Autumn. The corresponding meridians are the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Both correspond to Metal. The corresponding organs are the Lung and Liver (Lung Metal overcomes Liver Wood). The corresponding animals are shelled and feathered creatures (Shelled and feathered types harmonize in transformation). The corresponding objects have shells and veins/networks, also reflecting the harmonization of Metal and Fire. Diseases manifest as wheezing, chest oppression, and breathing with the body leaning back. This indicates excess Evil Qi in Lung Metal. The Upper Movement of Fire (Zheng) is similar to Proper Shang (Metal); their growth harmonizes. "Upper Zheng" refers to Shaoyin Ministerial Fire or Shao Yang Sanjiao Fire ruling the Heaven (years Geng-Zi, Geng-Wu, Geng-Yin, Geng-Shen). Excess Metal Qi is controlled by Fire, resulting in a state similar to Shenping (Balanced Metal), thus aligning with Proper Shang. Since Metal Qi is peaceful and Wood is not injured, the Growth Qi can harmonize its transformation. Diseases manifest as coughing. Fire invading Lung Metal causes coughing. Note: Geng-Chen and Geng-Xu years with Upper Yu (Water) are not mentioned because Metal and Water do not conflict. If the administration undergoes violent change, noble trees fail to flourish, and tender, brittle trees scorch at the tips. The Growth Qi comes to rescue, Great Fire flows, intense heat arrives, and creeping plants wither. Evil pathogens damage the Lungs. If Metal fails to exercise virtue and violently harms Wood, Fire will retaliate, and Metal will be injured instead, causing disease through evil affecting the Lungs.
The cycle of Flowing Abundance (Liu Yan) is called Sealing and Storage. This refers to the excess of Water, known as Liu Yan, occurring in Bing years (Yang Water). When Water is abundant, Yin Qi dominates, Heaven and Earth close up, and all things store away, hence "Sealing and Storage." Cold governs the transformation of objects, and Heaven and Earth are severe and condensed (Yin Qi is prosperous). The administration of storage is distributed, and the command of growth is not prominent (Water overcomes Fire). Its transformation is biting cold; its Qi is solid and hard (biting cold and condensation indicate the victory of Cold). Its administration is quiet; its command flows like water (the nature of Water). Its dynamic manifestations include floating, draining, irrigating, and surging. "Floating" rises upward; "draining" flows downward; "irrigating" pours; "surging" overflows. Its virtue is凝重 (heavy and solemn) cold atmosphere (the transformation of Cold; "cold atmosphere" refers to snow and rain; "fen" is pronounced fen). Its changes are ice, snow, frost, and hail (occurring out of season is called a change). The grains are beans and millet (ji). Beans belong to Water, millet (ji) to Earth; excess Water harmonizes with Earth for transformation. The livestock are pigs and cattle. Pigs belong to Water, cattle to Earth; pig and cattle breeding harmonize. The fruits are chestnuts and dates. Chestnuts and date fruits harmonize. The colors are black, cinnabar red, and yellow. Water overcomes Fire and harmonizes Earth; the appearance of these three colors varies in intensity. The flavors are salty, bitter, and sweet (representing Water, Fire, and Earth). The seasonal image is Winter. Phenomena such as cold air, frost, snow, and ice all share the transformation of Winter. The corresponding meridians are the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Both correspond to Water. The corresponding organs are the Kidney and Heart (Kidney Water overcomes Heart Fire). The corresponding animals are scaled creatures. Excess Water leads to the harmonization of scaled creatures. The corresponding objects are moist and full. "Ru" (moist) represents Water transformation; "man" (full) should be read as "rou" (flesh), representing Earth transformation. Diseases manifest as distension/fullness (excess Water Qi). The Upper Movement is Yu (Water), and the Growth Qi cannot transform. "Upper Yu" refers to Taiyang Cold Water ruling the Heaven (years Bing-Chen, Bing-Xu). With excess Water Qi receiving assistance, the Growth Qi of Fire cannot distribute its transformation. Note: Bing-Zi, Bing-Wu, Bing-Yin, and Bing-Shen years with Upper Zheng (Fire) are not mentioned due to the overcoming relationship of movements. If the administration exceeds limits, the Transformation Qi rises greatly, dust and haze mix in the air, and heavy rains fall frequently. Evil pathogens damage the Kidneys. Excessive Water administration harms Fire; the Transformation Qi of Earth rises to restore balance, causing dust, haze, and heavy rain, with damp evil damaging the Kidneys. Therefore, it is said: If one does not maintain their virtue, the overcome element will return/revenge; if the administration maintains its order, the overcome element will transform together. This is what is meant. "Heng" means constant. This concludes the discussion on the Five Movements of Excess. Not maintaining virtue means the overcome element retaliates against arrogance; maintaining administrative order means the overcome element transforms in harmony, such as Wood and Metal transforming together, or Fire and Water breeding in harmony.
