Xiao: In middle age, kidney essence was deficient with hyperactive ministerial fire, resulting in soreness and weakness of the feet and knees. The pulse was weak and rapid (Cu). Initially, Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) was used with Huainiuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), followed by Hujian Wan (Tiger-Hiding Pill) with Suoyang (Cynomorii Fructus) removed. After taking these, the patient felt very comfortable. However, after sitting for a long time, heat rose from the lumbar region, the lower abdomen contracted and pulled with qi ascending, and there was discomfort in the epigastrium and diaphragm. This condition arose from deficiency of the Chong and Du meridians, with dragon-fire failing to subside; merely regulating the zang organs' true essence would not yield results. It was prescribed that Guilu Erxian Gao (Turtle-Deer Two Immortals Paste) be added with pig spinal cord, boiled together and taken mixed with wine, which brought relief.
Li: Due to mistreatment of malaria pathogen by failing to induce sweating correctly, dampness pathogen entered the collaterals, causing flaccidity and paralysis of the four limbs. Treatment with methods to remove dampness and regulate collaterals restored movement to the hands and feet. However, during winter cold when qi and blood were constricted and stagnant, the lower abdomen felt tight and narrow, the back and spine were stiff and cramped, the shins and knees were numb and unresponsive, and walking was unsteady and falling. This indicated that the Yin and Yang Wei vessels failed to provide constraint, affecting both the Ren and Du meridians. Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) and Gouji (Cibotii Rhizoma) were used to strengthen sinews and bones to facilitate flexion and extension; Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) nourish liver and kidney to treat spasms; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) harmonize ying-nutrient level; Fuling (Poria) and Bibai (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) expel dampness; Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) treat bi-syndrome; Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) and Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus) moisten wind-dryness and regulate joints; Sangjisheng (Taxilli Fructus) was added to unblock collaterals. After decocting and taking more than ten doses, various symptoms gradually decreased. Subsequently, Lujiao Jiao (Stag Horn Glue), Shayuanzi (Astragali Complanati Semen), and Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus) were added to the previous formula to treat the extraordinary vessels, formed into pills and taken with wine, leading to complete recovery.
Clan child: Flaccidity and laxity of the spine and four limbs indicate disease of the Du meridian and Zongjin (tendons/major sinews). According to Neijing (The Inner Canon), treating flaccidity syndromes focuses solely on the Yangming meridian because Yangming is the convergence of Zongjin. When Yangming is deficient, Zongjin loses nourishment and cannot bind sinews and bones or facilitate joint movement. As a child, he sat and lay exposed to wind-dampness, allowing empty pathogens to invade, causing dysfunction of sinews and vessels. To eliminate wind-dampness, one must regulate the Du meridian and simultaneously nourish Zongjin for efficacy. The formula used Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Lujiao Jiao (Stag Horn Glue), Fuling (Poria), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Jisheng (Taxilli Fructus), Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus), Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), and Weilingxian (Saposhnikoviae Radix). After ten doses, limb movement became active. Lujiao Jiao, Jianghuang, Chuanxiong, Mugua, and Weilingxian were removed; Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Qizi (Lycii Fructus), and Hu Jinggu (Tigris Os) were added. After dozens of doses, walking and standing returned to normal.
Zhang family member: Flaccid weakness of the four limbs and difficulty in movement and walking, with a choppy and weak pulse, indicates deficiency of the ying-nutrient level. The classics state that as Tian Gui (menstrual essence/reproductive essence) approaches exhaustion, the Tai Chong meridian declines, leading to Yin Chui (vaginal flatulence) and turbid leukorrhea, with chronic ailments frequently recurring. Knowing that the Chong meridian is the Sea of Blood and belongs to Yangming, when Yangming is deficient, the Chong meridian fails to nourish, causing Zongjin to relax and loosen, unable to bind sinews and bones or facilitate joint movement. The method should be to regulate and tonify ying-blood to fill the extraordinary vessels. Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Qizi (Lycii Fructus), Fuling (Poria), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, steamed with wine), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, baked with wine), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) were decocted in water. After more than ten doses, gradual improvement occurred.
