In Shanghan, if the pulse is slow (Chi) after six or seven days, and Huangqin Tang is incorrectly used to clear heat, the slow pulse indicates cold. Wenge San (Formula 87). When a disease is in the Yang level, it should be resolved by sweating. If cold water is poured over or灌 (irrigated) onto the body, the heat is trapped and cannot escape, leading to increased vexation, gooseflesh on the skin, desire to drink water but no actual thirst. Take Wenge San. If not cured, give Wuling San. For Cold-Excess Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) without heat signs, give Sanwu Baisan. Pang Anchang stated: Xiaoxianxiong Tang is incorrect.
Wenge (Venerable Shell) (1 liang).
Grind this single herb into powder. Mix with boiling water and take one fang cun bi (square-inch measure).
Sanwu Baisan (Formula 88). Cold-Excess Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) without heat signs. Give Sanwu Baisan. (Belongs to the Taiyang channel).

Grind the first three herbs into powder, mix evenly with the ground Badou. Take with rice water. Strong individuals take half a qian bi; weak individuals reduce the dose. If the pathogen is above the diaphragm, vomiting will occur; if below, diarrhea will occur. If no diarrhea occurs, drink a cup of hot porridge to promote action; if diarrhea is excessive, drink a cup of cold porridge to stop it. If body heat and skin gooseflesh do not resolve, and the patient desires to cover themselves, washing with water will trap the heat. If sweating fails to occur, vexation results. If sweating has occurred and abdominal pain follows, administer Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 liang as described above.
Shizao Tang (Formula 89). Taiyang Wind Strike with diarrhea and vomiting/retching. Only when the exterior is resolved can the interior be attacked. Symptoms include sweating, intermittent headache, epigastric hardness/fullness radiating to the hypochondrium, dry retching, shortness of breath, sweating without aversion to cold. This indicates the exterior is resolved but the interior is unharmonized. Shizao Tang is indicated. (Belongs to the Taiyang channel).
Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos) (roasted red), Gansui (Kansui Radix), Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix) (equal parts).
Process equal parts of each herb separately, sieve, weigh, and mix powders. Pound in a mortar 300 times. First, decoct ten large jujubes in one and a half sheng of water until eight ge remains. Remove dregs, add the powder. Strong individuals take one qian bi; weak individuals take half a qian bi. Take alone with the jujube decoction at dawn. If little stool passes and disease remains, take again tomorrow, increasing by half a qian bi. Nourish with millet porridge after purgation. Failure to purge leads to distension, general edema, and death.
Didang Wan (Formula 90). Shanghan with fever, fullness in the lower abdomen. Urination should be difficult; if it is free, blood stasis is present. Purge with Didang Wan. Do not use other medicines. (Belongs to the Taiyang channel).
Shuizhi (Hirudo) (five pieces, roast, remove eggs, crush. Note: Hirudo may regenerate in the body if not properly prepared; must cut and roast with lime).
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (0.3 fen, peel clean), Mengchong (Tabanidae) (five pieces, remove wings and legs, roast).
Pound and sieve into one pill. Decoct in one large bai zhan of water until seven parts remain. Take in one dose. Blood should pass; if not, prepare another dose.
Didang Tang (Formula 91). Taiyang disease for six or seven days, exterior signs persist, pulse is faint and deep, no Jie Xiong (Chest Binding), but the patient is manic (Fa Kuang). Heat is in the Lower Jiao. Lower abdomen is hard and full, urination is free. Purge blood to cure. This is because Taiyang pathogen followed the meridians into the interior, causing blood-heat accumulation. Didang Tang is indicated. In Taiyang disease, if the body is yellow, pulse is deep and knotted, lower abdomen is hard, and urination is difficult, there is no blood stasis. If urination is free and the patient is like-manic, blood stasis is confirmed. Didang Tang is indicated.
Shanghan with fever, lower abdominal fullness. Urination should be difficult; if free, blood stasis is present. Purge with Didang Tang. (Above belongs to Taiyang). Yangming syndrome: Patient has memory loss (Xi Wang), indicating blood accumulation due to old blood stasis. Stool is hard but passage is easy, color is black. Didang Tang is indicated to purge.
Patient with no exterior or interior signs, fever for seven or eight days. Even if pulse is floating and rapid, purgation may be considered. If purged and pulse remains rapid, combined heat causes hunger. If no bowel movement for six or seven days, blood stasis is present. Didang Tang is indicated. (Above belongs to Yangming).
Shuizhi (Hirudo) (ten pieces, roast, remove eggs, crush. Note: ...must cut and roast with lime...).
Mengchong (Tabanidae) (ten pieces, remove wings and legs, roast), Taoren (Pruni Semen) (seven pieces, remove skin and tip, crush).
Cut herbs into pieces the size of hemp seeds or beans. Divide into two doses. Add two zhan of water. Decoct until seven parts remain. Remove dregs and take warm.
Maren Wan (Formula 92). Fuyang pulse is floating and choppy. Floating indicates strong Stomach Qi; choppy indicates frequent urination. The combination leads to hard stool. The Spleen is constrained (Pi Yue). Maren Wan is indicated.
Maren (Cannabis Seed) (5 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (4 liang), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (5.5 cun, peel, ginger-juice fried), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (4 liang, fried), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (2.5 liang, remove skin and tip), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (8 liang, peel).
Grind into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take ten pills with water. If ineffective, increase dose. Administer three times daily.
Yinchen Hao Tang (Formula 93). Yangming disease with fever and sweating: heat disperses outward, jaundice does not occur.
