Five Methods of Earth Qi Depression in the Lower Heaven (Di Yu Zai Quan)
1. Jueyin Wind-Wood in the Lower Heaven, corresponding to Si and Hai years, follows the same method for direct opposition. If the preceding year's ruling Qi was Metal Movement (Jin Yun), Metal under-acting controls Wood, preventing Wood from flourishing, resulting in a sky filled with pale yellow dust. Wood Qi remains long suppressed underground; in the following year, when Water Movement occurs, the pent-up anger of Wood finally erupts, causing disasters among the people and on the earth. Diseases manifest as sudden stroke, aphonia, paralysis, flaccidity of sinews, epilepsy, and cold extremities. When the dusty dampness recedes, sweet and yellow foods fail to transform properly. Strong winds blow frequently, the vast sky becomes dim and hazy, and clouds and rain cease.
2. Shaoyin Ministerial Fire and Shao Yang Ministerial Fire in the Lower Heaven, corresponding to Zi, Wu, Yin, and Shen years, follow the same method for direct opposition. If the preceding year's ruling Qi was Water Movement, Water under-acting controls Fire, causing the earth to display red heat Qi that is suppressed and cannot emerge. For years, it remains hidden within the earth, unable to surface. In the following year, upon encountering Wood Movement, the pent-up anger of Fire begins to emerge, bringing disasters to the people. Symptoms include mania, frightful epilepsy, nasal congestion or epistaxis, chest oppression, restlessness, and internal heat. Urine resembles blood; all things become scorched and withered, mountains and rivers dry up.
3. Taiyin Damp-Earth in the Lower Heaven, corresponding to Chou and Wei years, shares the same transformation and follows the same method for direct opposition. If the preceding year's ruling Qi was Wood Movement, Wood under-acting controls Earth, causing Earth Qi to be suppressed underground. The yellow color of Earth remains long suppressed and does not emerge. In the following year, upon encountering Fire Movement, the pent-up anger of Earth finally vents. Once this Qi emerges, many people suffer from epidemics, jaundice, swelling, dampness-induced distension, abdominal fullness, heel pain, and diarrhea. Mountains and marshes become dim and obscure; all things lose their vibrancy, and rain falls.
4. Yangming Dryness-Metal in the Lower Heaven, corresponding to Mao and You years, shares the same transformation and follows the same method for direct opposition. If the preceding year's ruling Qi was Fire Movement, Fire controls Metal, causing White Qi to disappear. Fire is suppressed in the earth and cannot ascend. In the following year, upon encountering Earth Movement, the pent-up anger of Metal finally emerges, causing disasters among the people and on the earth. Diseases include wheezing, cough, sorrow, shivering chills, hemoptysis, brittle and dry hair and nails, withered vegetation, and autumnal desolation. Trees make sounds in spring.
5. Taiyang Cold-Water in the Lower Heaven, corresponding to Chen and Xu years, shares the same transformation and follows the same method for direct opposition. If the preceding year's ruling Qi was Earth Movement, Earth controls Water, causing Black Qi to remain long hidden and unmanifested. In the following year, upon encountering Metal Movement, the pent-up anger of Water finally emerges, causing disasters among the people and on the earth. Diseases are all bi-syndromes, cold extremities, bone flaccidity, cold calves, urinary incontinence, and weak waist and knees lacking strength. All flowers and plants wither; sunlight loses its luster.
Twelve Methods of Reverse Transformation (Ni Hua) in the Lower Heaven
1. Bing Zi year, lower sees Xin Mao year. Bing-Xin combine into Water Movement. Earth sees Yangming Dryness-Metal in the Lower Heaven. Yangming is Metal; Metal generates Water. The "child" (Water) is above, the "father" (Metal) is below. Although they generate each other, this is called Reverse Transformation (Ni Hua). Reverse Transformation is also ominous. In Direct Opposition (Dui Hua) locations, Earth's transformation is not unified.
2. Bing Wu year, lower sees Xin You year. Bing-Xin combine into Water Movement. Earth sees Yangming Dryness-Metal in the Lower Heaven. Yangming is Metal; Metal generates Water. Water is above, Metal is below; the child occupies the father's position. Reverse implies ominous. In Regular Transformation (Zheng Hua) locations, disasters are minor.
3. Ding Chou year, lower sees Ren Chen year. Ding-Ren combine into Wood Movement. Earth sees Taiyang Cold-Water in the Lower Heaven. Taiyang is Water; Water generates Wood. Wood (child) is above, Water (father) is below; the child occupies the father's position, leading to ominous Reverse Transformation. In Direct Opposition locations, Earth's transformation is insubstantial.
