Pungent (Xin), Sour (Suan), Sweet (Gan), Bitter (Ku), and Salty (Xian) flavors each have their specific benefits; some disperse, some astringe, some relax, some accelerate (note: original text missing character, likely 'soften' or 'harden' based on context), some harden, some soften. The diseases of the five Zang organs in the four seasons follow the suitability of the five flavors.
(Using the five flavors to regulate the five Zang organs, the pairing is: Liver with Sweet, Heart with Sour, Spleen with Salty, Lung with Bitter, Kidney with Pungent, each according to its suitability. The aim is to achieve states of relaxation, astringency, softening (original text missing), purgation, dispersion, and hardening for therapeutic use, rather than defining meaning through mutual generation and nourishment [of Five Elements]. Note: In Wang Bing's earlier edition, there were ten characters "Pungent disperses, Sour astringes, Sweet relaxes, Bitter hardens, Salty softens," and this paragraph was placed at the end of the chapter in that edition. Upon detailed examination of the semantics, the meaning of these ten characters is already contained within this paragraph. Therefore, they were removed, and this paragraph was moved here to prevent confusion in the context.)
Toxic drugs attack pathogenic factors (Only toxic substances can expel pathogens and stabilize righteous Qi; thus, they are generally called toxic drugs. Note: Pathogens are abnormal Qi that harm righteous Qi. To support righteous Qi, one must attack pathogens, which requires toxic drugs. However, "toxic drugs" do not necessarily refer to highly poisonous substances like *Radix Stellerae* (Yelangdu) or Arsenic (Renyan). Any substance with heavy flavor and aroma, and vigorous and penetrating properties, sufficient to eliminate pathogens, qualifies. The New Correction only refers to laxatives, which is biased.) Grains serve as nourishment (Note: All medicinal properties are biased, used to assist deficiencies of righteous Qi. Grains, however, have balanced nature and flavor, fill the Stomach, tonify the Spleen, and transform Qi and Blood. Human life truly relies on them for nourishment.) Fruits serve as assistance (Note: "Assistance" refers to supporting righteous Qi, compensating for the insufficiencies of grains.) Livestock serve as supplementation (Note: Deficiencies of Essence and Blood cannot be supplemented by herbs and trees alone; animal products rich in blood and Qi are necessary. As the Classic states, "For deficiency of Essence, supplement with flavor.") Vegetables serve to fill (Note: "Fill" means to increase volume and make full. Vegetables have coarse texture, are easy to eat and digest, and are used to fill empty intestines.) Consuming them with harmonized aroma and flavor supplements Essence and Qi (Aroma belongs to Yang transformation, Flavor belongs to Yin manifestation. When aroma and flavor are harmonized, they supplement Essence and Qi.)
