\r五运客图\pt166a2.bmp\r
\r五运主图\pt166a3.bmp\r

Jia and Ji years correspond to the Earth phase (Earth Yun), Yi and Geng years to the Metal phase (Metal Yun), Ding and Ren years to the Wood phase (Wood Yun), Bing and Xin years to the Water phase (Water Yun), and Wu and Gui years to the Fire phase (Fire Yun). Jia acts as the husband, Ji as the wife, generating the true Earth.
Taking the year of Jia-Zi as an example, the Earth phase governs. The Five Phases (Wu Yun) include Heavenly Phase (Tian Yun), Guest Phase (Ke Yun), and Host Phase (Zhu Yun).
The Song of Five Phases states: In Jia and Ji years, the phase is Earth; in Yi and Geng years, the phase is Metal; in Ding and Ren years, the phase is Wood, flourishing like a forest; in Bing and Xin years, it is the long-flowing Water; in Wu and Gui years, located in the Li Palace, it is called Heart (Fire).
Taking the year of Jia-Zi as an example, the Earth phase receives the Heavenly Phase; in the year of Yi-Chou, the Metal phase receives the Heavenly Phase; in Bing and Xin years, the Water phase receives the Heavenly Phase; in Ding and Ren years, the Wood phase receives the Heavenly Phase; in Wu and Gui years, the Fire phase receives the Heavenly Phase. Assuming Jia and Ji transform into the Earth phase, the first half of the year is governed by Jia Earth, and the second half by Ji Earth. The rest follow this pattern.
[Image: Chart of Guest Five Phases]
Taking the year of Jia-Zi as an example, the Earth phase is the Heavenly Phase and thus becomes the Initial Phase. Thirteen days before the solar term Da Han (Great Cold), the Initial Phase begins. The Yi year is the Metal phase, which is the Second Phase. The Bing year is the Water phase, which is the Third Phase. The Ding year is the Wood phase, which is the Fourth Phase. The Wu year is the Fire phase, which is the Fifth Phase.
[Image: Chart of Host Five Phases]
The Initial Phase each year takes Wood as the Host Phase; the Second is Fire, the Third is Earth, following mutual generation; the Fourth is Metal as the norm; the Fifth is Cold Water, permitted continuously.
Taking each year as an example, starting from the day of Jiao Si (transition) at Da Han, Wood is the Host Phase, Fire is the Second Host Phase, Earth is the Third Host Phase, Metal is the Fourth Host Phase, and Water is the Fifth Host Phase. Host, Guest, and Heavenly Phases have separate calculation methods.

Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren are Tai (Excess); Yi, Xin, Ding, Gui, and Ji are Shao (Deficiency). Seek the pattern: Yang years are Tai, Yin years are Shao. The locations of borrowed palaces do not interfere with each other.
Jia is in Yin, Yi is in Chen, Bing borrows Chen, Ding is in Wei, Ji borrows Si, Xin borrows Xu, Wu is in Xu, Gui borrows Chou.
Wood (Jue), Fire (Zhi), and Metal (Shang) tones are excellent; Earth (Gong) and Water (Yu) tones are also very good. Yang years are Tai, Yin years are Shao. Obtaining the location reverses Tai and Shao.
Taking the year of Ji-Si as an example, Ji borrows Si. Si originally should be Shao Gong, but becomes Tai Gong. Xin borrows Xu. In the year of Bing-Xu, within Xu is Xin, which reverses to become Shao Yu. In the year of Gui-Chou, it is Tai Zhi. In the year of Ding-Wei, it is Tai Jue. In the year of Geng-Chen, Yi combines with Geng, containing Yi, which reverses to become Shao Shang. For the rest, Yang years are Tai, Yin years are Shao. For those borrowing stems, the location reverses Tai and Shao. The rest refers to Yin-Yang years.
Another method: Taking the year of Jia-Zi as an example, it is Tai Gong; Yi-Chou year is Shao Shang; Bing and Geng years are Tai Yu; Ding-Mao year is Shao Jue; Wu-Chen year is Tai Zhi.
