Ma Yun: The "Qi Fu" (Qi Gathering Places) refer to the locations where the Qi of each meridian converges and gathers. Therefore, some acupoints, although belonging to the primary meridian, are also accessed by other meridians; this section discusses only the places where meridian Qi emerges and converges, without being restricted to whether they belong to the primary or secondary meridians. The number of acupoints varies and is not strictly confined to the primary meridian. The previous chapter discussed acupoints, hence it was named "Qi Xue" (Qi Acupoints); whereas this chapter discusses the places where meridian Qi emerges, hence it is named "Qi Fu" (Qi Gathering Places). Gao Shixi deleted the character "Lun" (Discourse), as there is no question-and-answer format here.
Seventy-eight Acupoints: Wu Kun stated: In the following text, ninety-one acupoints were verified, which is thirteen more than this count. This differs from modern interpretations. Modern texts state that there are one hundred and twenty-six acupoints on both sides combined.
Zhang Jingyue stated: Upon detailed examination of the following text of this meridian, a total of ninety-three acupoints were obtained. Excluding fifteen acupoints that appear repeatedly due to floating Qi connecting with the primary meridian, specifically those of the Du Meridian and the Shaoyang Meridian, the primary meridian actually contains only seventy-eight acupoints. The traditional transmission of meridians in later times states that the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian has one hundred and twenty-six acupoints on both sides combined. Similarly, the number of acupoints for other meridians mentioned below differs significantly from current understandings.
From Hairline to Neck Three Cun and Half: Ma Yun stated: This refers to the two acupoints Dazhu (BL11) and Fengmen (BL12). Generally, measuring from the posterior neck upwards to the hairline, and then downwards from the hairline to the neck, the distance is calculated to be approximately three cun and half? (Note: The original text's logic is complex; Ma Yun intends to explain the relationship between distance and acupoint location.) The numerical value corresponds exactly to the positions of these two acupoints. The center line is the Du Meridian, and there are four rows of acupoints on either side, all belonging to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, thus it is said to have "five rows beside" (referring to the distribution pattern including the midline and two rows on each side, totaling five columns?). The two acupoints are each located one cun and half away from the midline; therefore, the distance between the left acupoint and the right acupoint totals three cun. (Commentary: "Entering the hairline" refers to entering the posterior hairline. The posterior part is called "Neck" (Xiang), the lateral part "Neck" (Jing), and the anterior part "Throat" (Hou). The New Correction assumes "entering the hairline" refers to the anterior hairline, suggesting changing "Xiang" to "Ding" (Vertex), and claiming distances such as three cun from Xinhui to Baihui and Baihui to Houding, while treating "half" as an interpolative character; this is too forced. With my current annotation, Wang Bing's commentary becomes clear, rendering further comments by the New Correction unnecessary.) Ma Yun further stated: "Xiang" should be read as "Ding" (Vertex). From Qucha (EX-HN19) entering the hairline above the eyebrows, moving upward to Tongtian (BL7) at the vertex center, the distance is three cun and half. Centered along with Tongtian is Baihui (GV20) of the Du Meridian. Baihui is the intersection of the Taiyang Meridian and the Du Meridian, so it is used here as an example to illustrate Baihui being central, with five acupoints in front and back, forming five rows on left and right, hence "five rows beside." From Baihui forward to Xinhui (GV22) backward, then to Qiangjian (GV18) on left and right, down to the Shaoyang acupoints, each spaced three cun apart, totaling twenty-five acupoints (5x5), as described in the following text. Gao Shixi stated: The character "Ding" was erroneously written as "Xiang" in old editions and has been corrected. "Ding" refers to acupoints in the anterior vertex region. From Zanzhu (BL2) entering the hairline to Qian Ding (GV21), including Shenting (GV24), Shangxing (GV23), and Xinhui (GV22), the length is three cun and half. Qian Ding is on the midline, followed by two inner rows and two outer rows, hence "five rows beside." This means there are five rows from the midline to the sides. Checking the *Jia Yi Jing*: Shenting is straight above the nose at the hairline; Shangxing is one cun inside the hairline, centered above the nose; Xinhui is one cun behind Shangxing; Qian Ding is one cun and half behind Xinhui. These four acupoints span three cun and half. Gao's annotation seems correct.
Floating Qi: Wu Kun stated: This refers to Yang Qi floating above the vertex. Zhang Jingyue stated: It refers to meridian Qi floating at the vertex.
One on Each Side of the Large Tendon in the Neck: Gao Shixi stated: Fengchi (GB20) acupoints.
One on Each Side of Fengfu: Gao Shixi stated: Tianzhu (BL10) acupoints. To clarify the previously mentioned outer sides, i.e., the acupoints named Fengchi on both sides of the large tendon in the neck, there is one on each side; the inner sides next to the Fengfu acupoint, named Tianzhu, also have one on each side. Commentary: This differs from Wang Bing's annotation. The *Jia Yi Jing* records: Tianzhu is located in the depression outside the lateral edge of the large tendon behind the posterior hairline, where the Qi of the Foot-Taiyang Meridian emerges. It also states: Fengchi is located in the depression behind the temporal region at the hairline. Based on this, Wang Bing's annotation is correct.
One in Each of the Fifteen Intervals: Wu Kun stated: "Interval" refers to the space between bones. From Dazhui (GV14) to Baohuang (BL54), there are fifteen ribs, hence "fifteen intervals." "One in each of the fifteen intervals" refers to the thirteen acupoints recorded in the current *Jia Yi Jing*, all located three cun from the spine, such as Fufen (BL43), etc. (Consistent with Wang Bing's note). Left and right combine to form twenty-six acupoints. In later times, the Gaohuang (BL48) acupoints were added, located next to Pohu (BL42). Before the Jin and Han dynasties, these were generally not recognized. If "one in each of the fifteen intervals" implies thirty acupoints, then perhaps the character "Wu" (Five) is a corruption of "San" (Three). Commentary: Zhang Jingyue includes Dazhu (BL11) and Gaohuang (BL48) to make fifteen acupoints; Ma Yun considers the Back-Shu points of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, Zhonglü Neishu (BL44), and Baihuan Shu (BL30) as fifteen Shu points; Gao Shixi agrees with Ma Yun. However, Gaohuang is not found in pre-Jin texts, and the Back-Shu points are listed in the following text, so neither interpretation is adopted.
Above the Two Corners: Wu Kun stated: "Corner" refers to the frontal angle. Zhang Jingyue stated: The ear corner. Gao Shixi stated: The head corner. Chen Shi's *Shi Gu* explains: The center of the forehead is called Yan or Ting; the sides are called frontal angles (Ejiao); the prominent parts on the sides of the vertex are called head corners (Toujiao) or simply Jiao. The *Meridian Sinews Chapter* states: The sinew of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian follows behind the ear, ascends to the frontal angle, and crosses the vertex. Commentary: The area near the vertex above the ear is the head corner, not the frontal angle. Thus, "frontal angle" is likely a corruption of "head corner." Commentary: According to Chen Shi, the "two corners" mentioned here also refer to the head corners. Tianchong (GB3) is located two cun behind the ear hairline, so Zhang Jingyue's identification as the ear corner is incorrect.
Sharp Hair: Gao Shixi stated: Refers to the sideburns. "Rui" is pronounced like "Xiong," sounding like "Rui."
Mian Qiu Bone: Ma Yun stated: "Qiu" is synonymous with "HT" (likely a typo/corruption in source). Wang Bing's annotation for Mian Qiu Bone in the following text says: "Qiu" refers to the cheekbone. Gao Shixi stated: The area on the face where nasal Qi passes laterally, hence called Mian Qiu. Commentary: "HT" cannot be verified in dictionaries. It might be "Jia" (cheek). Gao's note lacks basis and may be fabricated. Chen Shi's *Shi Gu* explains: The bone rising under the eye is called [unclear]; the higher and larger part below and lateral to it is called Mian Qiu Bone, also known as the cheekbone, great cheekbone, or [unclear]. "Qiu" and [unclear] were interchangeable in ancient times.
Three on Each Side Spanning Three Cun Clamping the Umbilicus: Gao Shixi stated: Changed "three cun" to "two cun." Annotation: Clamping the umbilicus means adjacent to it. "Guang" means width. Spanning two cun clamping the umbilicus refers to Tianshu (ST25). "Each three" refers to Lingqu (ST15) and Daju (ST16) outside Tianshu, three on each side, totaling six acupoints. Commentary: Gao's change to two cun based on *Jia Yi Jing* seems plausible. However, it omits Huairenmens (ST17), why?
Two on Each Side Spanning Two Cun Below the Umbilicus: Gao Shixi stated: Changed to "three cun." Annotation: Three cun below the umbilicus is Guanyuan (CV4). Clamping three cun below the umbilicus refers to the outer lateral Shuidao (ST28), Guilai (ST29), and Qichong (ST30), three on each side. Commentary: If changed to two cun, the Qichong acupoint would be missing, so Gao changed it to three cun. However, since Qichong is listed in the following text, Gao's interpretation should not be followed.
Fu Tu: Wu Kun's edition writes "Fu Tu" as "Futu" (Vast Rabbit).
One on Each Side Below the Qiu Bone: Gao Shixi stated: Refers to the two Juliao (SI18) acupoints below the empty space of the Mian Qiu Bone mentioned earlier. Commentary: According to *Jia Yi Jing*, Quanliao (SI18) is in the depression below the lower edge of the facial cheekbone, so the old annotation is correct. Zhang Jingyue stated: "Qiu" should be "Liao," referring to the two Quanliao acupoints. Zhang noted earlier that "Qiu" is the same as "Liao," but changed the character here, which is sloppy.
One on Each Side Above the Ear Auricle: Gao Shixi stated: "Guo" refers to the framework or border.
Above Quye: Gao Shixi stated: The sharp bone at the shoulder end, sinking downward from behind, is called Quye. Commentary: Quye likely refers to the curved area of the elbow axilla, similar to the curve of Quchi. The Shu point is behind Jianzhen, below the large bone, and above the curve of the axilla; this is the acupoint. Gao's note is likely incorrect.
One in the Depression Above the Pillar Bone: Gao Shixi stated: Pillar bone refers to the cervical vertebrae. The depression above the pillar bone refers to the two Jianjing (GB21) acupoints. Commentary: Jianjing is located in the depression on the shoulder, which is lateral to the cervical vertebrae. How can it be described as the depression above the cervical vertebrae? There must be another reference. All annotations agree, but it cannot be verified now.
Four Cun Above Tianchuang: Gao Shixi stated: Furong (GB12) acupoint. Commentary: Differs from the previous note; unknown which is correct.
Base of the Little Finger: Gao Shixi stated: "Ben" (root/base) refers to the fingertip. From the elbow downwards to the base of the little finger refers to below the elbow bone, descending laterally to the tip of the little finger. Commentary: The New Correction interprets "Ben" as the root of the nail, which is incorrect.
One in the Empty Space of the Daying Bone: Wu Kun stated: One originates from the Foot-Yangming, one from here; could this be where the Hand-Yangming and Foot-Yangming meridians converge? *Jia Yi Jing* is a late work and insufficient as evidence.
One on Each Side Above the Corner: Wu Kun stated: Hanyan (GB18) acupoint. Zhang Jingyue agrees. Gao Shixi stated: Above the head corner, the two Tianchong (GB3) acupoints. Commentary: Wang Bing's annotation for "One on Each Side Below the Frontal Angle of the Foot-Shaoyang Ear" earlier stated: Refers to the two Xuanli (GB19) acupoints, yet here he also annotates Xuanli, which is an error. Wu Kun identified the corner as the frontal angle, while Gao Shixi identified it as the head corner, leading to different explanations. *Jia Yi Jing*: Hanyan is at the upper edge of the temporal curve (Curve, Tong Ren text uses 'Jiao'); Xuanli is at the lower edge of the temporal curve; Tong Ren: Tianchong is two cun inside the hairline behind the ear. Thus, Wu's annotation is more accurate.
Anterior to the Foot-Taiyang in the Neck: Gao Shixi stated: The Foot-Taiyang meridian descends through the neck along the back. Now, anterior to the Foot-Taiyang in the neck, below Renying (ST9), are the two Qishe (ST11) acupoints. Commentary: Posterior is called Neck (Xiang), lateral is called Neck (Jing), anterior is called Throat (Hou). Since Qishe is in the neck, it cannot be described as anterior to the Foot-Taiyang in the neck. Wang Bing's annotation should be followed.
One on Each Side Flanking Futu: Gao Shixi stated: Following up on Qishe, it is said to flank Futu (LI18), meaning Qishe and Futu are adjacent. Commentary: This note is also incorrect.
One in the Interval Between Muscles Three Cun Below Jianzhen: Gao Shixi stated: Three cun below Jianzhen (SI9) is Xiaoluo (SI81). Fenjian refers to the space between the muscles of Jianzhen; Tianzong (SI11) is the Shu point.
Three in the Center of the Face: Gao Shixi stated: In the center of the face, from the nose to the lip, there are Sulu (EX-HN23), Shuigou (GV26), and Duanduan (CV15) acupoints. Commentary: This is based on Zhang Jingyue's note. Most texts record Yinjiao (GV28) but not Duanduan. Yinjiao is inside the lip above the teeth and should not be described as in the center of the face. I follow Zhang and Gao here.
And Fifteen Acupoints on the Sides: Wu Kun stated: From Dazhui (GV14) to Changqiang (GV1), there are thirteen acupoints. Plus Huiyang (BL35), one on each side, totaling fifteen acupoints. Zhang Jingyue stated: Huiyang consists of two acupoints, belonging to the Foot-Taiyang Meridian, located on both sides of the sacrococcygeal region, hence called "on the sides," totaling sixteen acupoints. Including Huiyang in this meridian makes twenty-nine acupoints.
Below [Unclear Character]: All editions write "[Unclear Character] below." Pronounced by Xiong as "Dingji fan." Zhang stated: "[Unclear Character]," pronounced "Di," refers to the tail coccyx.
Three Cun Below Jiwei, Five Cun Stomach Chamber, Stomach Chamber: Ma Yun stated: One cun below Jiwei (CV15) is Juque (CV14); another one cun and half below is Shangwan (CV13). The mention of "three cun" counts from the cartilage above Jiwei. Three cun and half below Jiwei is Zhongwan (CV12) in the middle of the stomach. The mention of "five cun" is a textual error. Zhang Jingyue stated: Jiwei is the cartilage in front of the heart. Stomach Chamber refers to Shangwan. From the umbilicus up to Shangwan is five cun, hence also called "Five Cun Stomach Chamber." This is an inverted grammatical structure in the ancient classic. Gao's edition: "Three cun below Jiwei." (Period) "Five Cun Stomach Chamber." (Period) "Below Stomach Chamber." (Period) Annotation: Three cun below Jiwei includes Juque, Shangwan, and Zhongwan, totaling three cun. Five Cun Stomach Chamber, from Shangwan to the umbilicus, includes Zhongwan, Jianli (CV11), Xiawan (CV10), Shuifen (CV9), and Shenque (CV8), totaling five cun. "Below Stomach Chamber" refers to the umbilicus. Gao's interpretation aligns with this.
To Henggu Six Cun and Half, One: Ma Yun stated: Below Zhongwan, there are Jianli, Xiawan, Shuifen, Shenque, Yinjiao (CV13), Qihai (CV6), Shimen (CV5), Guanyuan (CV4), Zhongji (CV3), and Qugu (CV2), totaling thirteen cun. The mention of "six cun and half one" is suspected to mean "two sets of six cun and half," equaling thirteen cun. Zhang Jingyue stated: The *Bone Proportions Chapter* says: From the knee joint to Tianshu is eight cun; from Tianshu to Henggu (CV2) is six cun and half. This matches exactly. "One" refers to one cun, implying one acupoint per cun. The total from top to bottom is fourteen cun and half, hence fourteen acupoints. From Jiwei to Qugu is correct. Gao Shixi stated: From the umbilicus below the Stomach Chamber, from Zhongji to the lateral Henggu, there are Yinjiao, Qihai, Shimen, Guanyuan, and Zhongji, five acupoints, five cun. From Zhongji to Henggu is about one cun and half, making six cun and half one fen. From Jiwei to both Henggu, there are fifteen acupoints in total. This is the Ren Meridian governing the front, serving as the method for the midline abdominal pulse. Commentary: From three cun below Jiwei to here, the annotations are unclear. For now, I tentatively follow Zhang Jingyue. Wu Kun revised it to "Three cun below Jiwei is Stomach Chamber, four cun is Stomach Chamber, eight cun is Umbilicus, below to Henggu five cun, fourteen Shu points, Abdominal Pulse Method." The original text should have been like this. However, it inevitably remains speculative.
One Below Yin Bie: Wu Kun stated: Yin Bie is the branch of the Ren Meridian reaching the yin region. Zhang Jingyue stated: From below Qugu, the collateral branches separately, meeting between the two yins, as the convergence of Chong and Du, hence called Yin Bie. Gao Shixi stated: Xia Yin refers to below the anterior yin, the Huiyin (CV1) acupoint. Bie Yi refers to the single acupoint from Qugu to Huiyin, distinct from the previous Henggu which does not connect to Huiyin. Commentary: Xia Yin Bie is likely another name for Huiyin. Gao's note is likely incorrect.
One Yinjiao: Gao Shixi quoted Zhi Yun: The Yinjiao acupoint is located in the gum seam inside the lower lip. Anciently, it was believed there were two Yinjiao: the Du Meridian's Yinjiao enters the upper teeth; the Ren Meridian's Yinjiao enters the lower teeth. Named Yinjiao because the upper and lower gums/teeth intersect. Gao Shixi stated: The tooth gap is the intersection of Ren and Du, hence called Yinjiao. Commentary: The theory of two Yinjiao is hard to substantiate. Examining the acupoints above reveals the error clearly.
Foot-Shaoyin Under the Tongue: Gao Shixi quoted Zhi Yun: Refers to the Kidney Meridian connecting to the Heart, following the throat, flanking the root of the tongue, with acupoint apertures under the tongue belonging to the Kidney Meridian. Commentary: The *Acupuncture for Malaria Chapter* states: The two vessels under the tongue are Lianquan (CV23). The *Root and Terminal Chapter* states: Shaoyin roots at Yongquan and terminates at Lianquan. Knowing that besides the Ren Meridian's Lianquan, there is a Kidney Meridian's Lianquan, Wang Bing stated: Two acupoints of the Foot-Shaoyin under the tongue. Xue Shi's *Kou Chi Lei Yao* states: The Lianquan acupoint under the tongue belongs to the Kidney Meridian. Ma Yun and Zhang Jingyue interpreted it as the Ren Meridian's Lianquan, which is inaccurate.
One Jimai in the Hair: Wu Kun stated: Foot-Shaoyin under the tongue, Jueyin in the hair, four acupoints, unnamed in ancient times. Zhang Jingyue stated: Jimai (LV1) is in the pubic hair. For acute hernia pain radiating to the lower abdomen and testicles, it is a sign of Jimai. It is where the Jueyin meridian Qi emerges. Current texts like *Jia Yi Jing* and acupuncture books have lost this acupoint. Ma Yun agrees. *Tu Yi* states: This acupoint is absent in texts from *Jia Yi Jing* onwards, indicating an omission. The *Meridian Chapter* states: The Foot-Jueyin follows the medial thigh, enters the pubic hair, passes over the genitalia. It also states: Its branch follows the shin, ascends to the scrotum, and knots at the penis. This is the main pathway of Jueyin converging with Yangming. Commentary: Gao Shixi quoted Zhi Yun: Refers to the Liver Meridian originating at the hair on the big toe and the string-tight nature of Liver Qi. Gao Shixi stated: Qugu (CV2) acupoint. This is incorrect.
One Each of the Hand-Shaoyin: Gao Shixi quoted Zhi Yun: Among the 365 acupoints, there are two acupoints of the Heart Meridian. Gao Shixi stated: Shaochong (HT9) on left and right, one each. Commentary: Wu Kun, Ma Yun, and Zhang Jingyue follow Wang Bing's note, which seems correct.
Fish Borders of Hands and Feet: Wu Kun stated: Wherever black and white skin meet on hands and feet, resembling the border of a fish belly, is called Yujì (Fish Border). Zhang Jingyue stated: The fleshy areas on both sides of the palms and soles are called Fish. Mentioning the fish borders here serves as a general principle for the Qi Fu of all meridians, as the four limbs are the origin of the twelve meridians. Commentary: Gao Shixi quoted Zhi Yun: The hand's Yujì is where Lung Meridian Qi emerges; the foot's Yujì is where Spleen Meridian Qi emerges. Gao Shixi agrees. This view should not be followed.
Totaling Three Hundred and Sixty-Five Acupoints: Wu Kun stated: Totaling 398 acupoints, minus four duplicates, actually 29 more. Zhang Jingyue stated: Totaling 386 acupoints, minus twelve duplicates, still nine more. Commentary: Gao Shixi and Ma Yun force the count to match 365, which is unreliable.
