[Explanation of Names]
1) Yanggu (Yang Valley). Yang refers to Yang Qi. Gu refers to the hollow space between two mountains. The name Yanggu indicates that the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian absorb heat here and transform into Yang-heat Qi in the Heaven level (upper part of the body). The substance at this acupoint is damp-hot Qi coming from Wanggu (SI4), which further absorbs heat and vaporizes upon reaching this point, ascending to a higher Heaven level. This acupoint acts as a valley for the generation of Yang Qi, hence the name Yanggu.
2) Jing-Stream Point of the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. Jing implies flowing and not remaining stationary. The change of Qi and Blood substance at this point involves absorbing heat, expanding, and transmitting along the meridian, representing a state of flowing without staying, thus it is classified as a Jing-Stream point.
3) This point belongs to Fire. Belonging to Fire refers to the Five Elements attribute manifested by the operational changes of the Qi and Blood substance at this point. The substance here is damp-hot Qi from Wanggu (SI4); upon reaching this point, it further absorbs heat and expands. The expanded Qi flares upward to the Heaven level, exhibiting the characteristic of Fire's nature to flare up, hence its elemental attribution is Fire.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Yang Qi in the upper Heaven level.
Running Rule: Ascends from the lower Heaven level to the upper Heaven level.
Function: Generates Yang Qi.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, use tonification or moxibustion; for Heat patterns, use sedation.
6) Yanglao (SI6) - Xi-Cleft Point of the Hand-Taiyang Meridian.
Acupoint Meaning: The Jing-Qi of the Small Intestine Meridian transforms into Pure Yang Qi here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Yanglao. Yang means nourishing and caring for. Lao means old, relative to young/small, implying seniority and respect. The name Yanglao indicates that the Qi and Blood substance at this point is Pure Yang Qi harmonizing with the Heaven level of the head. The substance comes from the hot Qi transmitted from Yanggu (SI5); exiting this point, it expands and transforms into Pure Yang Qi with less moisture content, sharing the same nature as the Yang Qi of the Heavenly head region, hence the name Yanglao.
2) Xi-Cleft Point of the Hand-Taiyang Meridian. Xi means pore or crevice. The channel for Qi and Blood flow at this point is narrow, like a pore, thus it is the Xi-Cleft point of the Hand-Taiyang meridian.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Pure Yang Qi.
Running Rule: Ascends along the skin regions from this point to the Heaven level of the head and neck.
Function: Nourishes and supplements Yang Qi.

7) Zhengzheng (SI7) - Luo-Connecting Point of the Hand-Taiyang Meridian.
Acupoint Meaning: Most of the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian runs along the meridian itself here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Zhengzheng. Zhi means branch of a tree. Zheng means the main/regular path. The name Zhengzheng indicates that most of the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian flows along the regular meridian. Although the substance originates from Yanglao (SI6), since most of Yanglao's Yang Qi ascends to the Heaven level, the Qi and Blood at this point on the Small Intestine Meridian is relatively empty. Therefore, Qi and Blood from outside the meridian channels converge into this point and run along the Small Intestine Meridian. Since the running channel is the regular Small Intestine meridian, it is named Zhengzheng.
2) Luo-Connecting Point of the Hand-Taiyang Meridian. Luo means connection. Because the Qi and Blood at this point is in an empty state, the Qi of the Heart Meridian, which is interiorly-exteriorly related to the Small Intestine Meridian, converges into this point. Thus, this point has the function of connecting the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine and Heart meridians, making it the Luo-Connecting point of the Hand-Taiyang meridian.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Qi of the Heaven level.
Running Rule: Converges into this point from outside the Small Intestine Meridian (primarily provided by the Heart Meridian).

The gathered Tianbu Qi exists in the form of clouds, covering a vast area like a sea, and contains some moisture, hence the name Xiaohai.
2) He-Sea Point of the Small Intestine Meridian. As the convergence point of Qi and Blood for the Small Intestine Meridian, it is the He-Sea point.
3) This point belongs to Earth. Belonging to Earth refers to the Five Elements attribute manifested by the operational changes of the Qi and Blood substance. As the convergence point of Jing-Qi, the movement of Qi and Blood is slow, embodying the stillness of Earth, hence its elemental attribution is Earth.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Tianbu Qi, warm and hot in nature.
Running Rule: Slowly evaporates and disperses, ascending along the Small Intestine Meridian.
Function: Generates Qi of the Small Intestine.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, first sedate then tonify, or use moxibustion; for Heat patterns, use sedation.
9) Jianzhen (SI9)
Acupoint Meaning: The Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian ascends here to the Heaven level where Yang Qi resides.
[Explanation of Names]
Jian refers to the shoulder, the location of the acupoint. Zhen refers to divination or asking omens in ancient times. The name Jianzhen indicates that the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian ascends here to the Heaven level of Yang Qi. The substance is Tianbu Qi steaming and ascending from Xiaohai (SI8). Upon reaching this point, the Qi cools, contracts, becomes scanty, and weak. The influence of its fiery nature on the Tianbu Qi is uncertain, akin to needing divination, hence the name Jianzhen.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Tianbu Qi, warm in nature.
Running Rule: Disperses to various parts of the shoulder.

10) Naoshu (SI11) - Meeting Point of Hand-Taiyang, Yangwei, and Qiao Meridians.
Acupoint Meaning: Water-dampness in the Heaven level gathers here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Naoshu. Nao refers to the forelimb of an animal. Shu means transport. The name Naoshu indicates that Yang Qi ascending from the lower arm gathers here. Since no Qi and Blood transmits from Jianzhen (SI9) to this point, the intra-acupoint Qi and Blood is formed by the gathering of Yang Qi ascending from various points in the lower arm, hence the name Naoshu.
2) Meeting Point of Hand-Taiyang, Yangwei, and Qiao Meridians. The Qi and Blood substance at this point includes both Yang Qi ascending from the lower arm points and Yang Qi transmitted from the Yangwei and Qiao meridians, thus it is the meeting point of these three meridians.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Yang Qi of the Heaven level.
Running Rule: Cools and descends, moving downward to Tianzong (SI11).
Function: Cools and descends turbid Qi of the Heaven level in the Small Intestine Meridian.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, use tonification or moxibustion; for Heat patterns, use sedation.
11) Tianzong (SI11)
Acupoint Meaning: Jing-Water of the Earth level of the Small Intestine Meridian vaporizes and ascends to the Heaven level here.
[Explanation of Names]
Tian refers to the Heaven level where Qi and Blood operates. Zong refers to ancestral temple, implying reverence or audience. The name Tianzong indicates that the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian vaporizes and ascends to the Heaven level here. The substance is Jing-Water cooling and descending from Naoshu (SI10). Upon reaching this point, the Jing-Water vaporizes again and ascends to the Heaven level, resembling an audience with the Heaven, hence the name Tianzong.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Jing-Water of the Earth level and the Tianbu Qi generated from its vaporization.
Running Rule: Ascends along the Heaven level from this point to the head and neck.
Function: Generates Yang Qi.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, use tonification and moxibustion; for Heat patterns, use sedation or water-injection.
12) Bingfeng (SI12) - Meeting Point of Hand-Yangming, Taiyang, and Foot-Shaoyang Meridians.
Acupoint Meaning: The Jing-Qi of the Small Intestine Meridian forms wind-damp Qi here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Bingfeng. Bing means to hold or manage. Feng means wind. The name Bingfeng indicates that the Qi transformed by the Small Intestine Meridian forms wind Qi here. The substance is Tianbu Qi transmitted from Tianzong (SI11). Upon ascending here, it absorbs heat, expands, and transforms into wind Qi, which runs along the Small Intestine Meridian, as if being directed, hence the name Bingfeng.
2) Meeting Point of Hand-Yangming, Taiyang, and Foot-Shaoyang Meridians. The substance is water-damp Qi heated and expanded. Due to its strong Qi and Blood and transmission at the same Heaven level, it harmonizes with the damp-heat nature of the Yangming meridian (abundant in Qi and Blood) and exhibits the wind-wood nature of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian, thus it is the meeting point of these meridians.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is wind Qi of the Heaven level.
Running Rule: Cools and descends to Quyan (SI13).
Function: Adsorbs water-dampness, cools and descends Yin-turbidity of the Small Intestine Meridian.

13) Quyan (SI14)
Acupoint Meaning: Spleen-earth dust within the Jing-Qi of the Small Intestine Meridian settles here.
[Explanation of Names]
Qu means hidden. Yuan means low wall. The name Quyan indicates that Spleen-earth dust within the Jing-Qi of the Small Intestine Meridian settles here. The substance is wind Qi transmitted from Bingfeng (SI12). During its journey to this point, it absorbs moisture and descends. Upon reaching this point, the Spleen-earth dust in the gaseous Tianbu Qi settles to the Earth level. The accumulated Spleen-earth material resembles a mound or a low wall, hence the name Quyan.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Spleen-earth microparticles rich in water-dampness at the Earth level.
Running Rule: Descends from the Heaven level to the Earth level and accumulates inside and outside the vicinity of the acupoint.
Function: Settles turbidity of the Small Intestine Meridian.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, use moxibustion or tonification; for Heat patterns, use sedation or water-injection.
14) Jianwaiyu (SI15)
Acupoint Meaning: High-temperature water-damp Qi from the interior of the chest is transported outward here.
[Explanation of Names]
Jian refers to the scapular region. Wai means exterior. Shu means transport. The name Jianwaiyu indicates that high-temperature water-damp Qi from the interior of the chest is transported outward to the Small Intestine Meridian via this point. Located at the upper scapula with the thoracic cavity internally, this point has pores at the Earth level connecting to the thoracic cavity. Thus, high-temperature water-damp Qi from the thoracic cavity is transported outward to the Small Intestine Meridian, hence the name Jianwaiyu.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is damp-hot Qi.
Running Rule: Transports from the interior of the thoracic cavity to the body surface.
Function: Reduces internal thoracic pressure and temperature.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, use tonification or moxibustion; for Heat patterns, use sedation or water-injection.
15) Jianzhongyu (SI16)
Acupoint Meaning: High-temperature water-damp Qi from the interior of the chest is transported outward here.
[Explanation of Names]
Jian refers to the scapular region. Zhong means middle. Shu means transport. The name Jianzhongyu indicates that high-temperature water-damp Qi from the interior of the chest is transported outward to the Small Intestine Meridian via this point. Located at the middle of the scapular ridge with the thoracic cavity internally, this point has pores at the Earth level connecting to the thoracic cavity. Thus, high-temperature water-damp Qi from the thoracic cavity is transported outward to the Small Intestine Meridian, hence the name Jianzhongyu.
16) Tianchuang (SI17)
Aliases: Chuanlong, Chuanlong, Chuanghuang, Tianlong.
Acupoint Meaning: Heat flaring up from the neck is transmitted outward to the body surface here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Tianchuang. Tian refers to the Heaven level. Chuang refers to a window for ventilation. The name Tianchuang indicates that heat flaring up from the neck is transmitted outward to the body surface here. The substance comes from two sources: one is the ascending hot Qi from Jianzhongyu (SI16) ascending to the Tianbu of the head and face via this point; the other is the hot Qi ascending along the neck transmitted from the interior to the exterior of this point. The name emphasizes this latter part of Qi and Blood transmitted from interior to exterior. The heat-dispersing function of this point is like opening a skylight, hence the name Tianchuang. The aliases Chuanlong, Chuanghuang, and Tianlong share similar meanings; Long and Huang refer to mechanisms of opening and closing, indicating that the Earth-level pores of this point have opening and closing characteristics.
2) Chuanlong. Chuang refers to a window, i.e., a mechanism of opening and closing. Long refers to deafness or blockage. The name Chuanlong indicates that this point lacks Earth-level pores connecting to the interior. This point is a site for dissipating internal heat from the neck. The reason internal neck heat dissipates here is not due to Earth-level pores connecting to the interior, but because this point is located at a high ground in the local gravity field of the neck, closest to the position of high-temperature Qi and Blood internally. Therefore, high-temperature hot Qi from inside the neck exudes outward through this point, hence the name Chuanlong.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is high-temperature water-damp Qi.
Running Rule: Ascends to the Heaven level along the Small Intestine Meridian.
Function: Disperses internal heat.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, use tonification or moxibustion; for Heat patterns, use sedation.
17) Tianrong (SI18)
Acupoint Meaning: The Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian gathers and converges here.
[Explanation of Names]
Tian refers to the Heaven level. Rong means contain or accommodate. The name Tianrong indicates that the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian gathers and converges here. The substance is damp-heat Tianbu Qi transmitted from Tianchuang (SI17). Upon reaching this point, the damp-heat Qi cools and dissipates heat, transforming into cloud-like gaseous matter of the Heaven level and gathering within the acupoint, as if contained by this point, hence the name Tianrong.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is water-damp cloud Qi of the Heaven level.
Running Rule: Circulates along the Small Intestine Meridian, dissipating heat and cooling down to connect with Quanliao (SI18).
Function: Transmits water-dampness.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, first sedate then tonify, or use moxibustion; for Heat patterns, use sedation.
18) Quanliao (SI18) - Meeting Point of Hand-Shaoyang and Taiyang Meridians.
Aliases: Duigu, Duanduan, Zhuliao, Quanliao.
Acupoint Meaning: The Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian cools and descends here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Quanliao. Quan refers to the zygomatic bone, indicating the location. Liao means pore. The name Quanliao indicates that the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian cools and descends to the Earth level here, entering the interior meridian of the Small Intestine through the Earth-level pore of this point. The substance is water-damp cloud Qi transmitted from Tianrong (SI18). Upon reaching this point, the cloud Qi cools and descends to the Earth level and enters the interior meridian through the Earth-level pore, hence the name Quanliao.
2) Duigu, Duanduan. Dui represents Metal in the Eight Trigrams. Gu refers to water. The name Duigu indicates that the Qi and Blood substance at this point is cool and damp water Qi of the Heaven level. The rationale is the same as for Quanliao.
3) Duanduan. Dui represents Metal. Duan means endpoint. The name Duanduan indicates that the Qi and Blood at this point is cool and has reached the highest point of ascent in the Small Intestine Meridian. The substance is water-damp cloud Qi from Tianrong (SI18). Upon reaching this point, it dissipates heat and becomes cool Qi, and since it is at the highest point of ascent for the Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian, it is named Duanduan.
4) Zhuliao, Quanliao. Zhui refers to a hammer. Quan refers to a counterweight. Liao means pore. The names Zhui and Quan indicate that the water-damp cloud Qi at this point condenses into rain and descends to the Earth level. The falling rain is like a small hammer or counterweight, hence the names Zhuliao and Quanliao.
5) Meeting Point of Hand-Shaoyang and Taiyang Meridians. Of the water-damp cloud Qi at this point, part condenses into rain and cools/descends, while the rest further absorbs moisture and moves horizontally downward to Tinggong (SI19) in the form of clouds. The horizontal transmission of water-damp cloud Qi harmonizes with the Qi and Blood characteristics of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, thus it is the meeting point of the Hand-Shaoyang and Taiyang meridians.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is water-damp cloud Qi of the Heaven level, cool in nature.
Running Rule: Moves horizontally downward to Tinggong (SI19).
Function: Cools and descends turbid Qi of the Heaven level.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, use dredging or first sedate then tonify; for Heat patterns, use sedation.
19) Tinggong (SI19) - Meeting Point of Hand-Shaoyang, Foot-Shaoyang, and Hand-Taiyang Meridians.
Aliases: Duosuo Wen, Duowen.
Acupoint Meaning: The Qi and Blood of the Small Intestine Meridian returns to the interior meridian of the Small Intestine here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Tinggong. Ting means to hear. Gong means palace. The name Tinggong indicates that the Qi and Blood of the exterior meridian of the Small Intestine enters the interior meridian from this point. The substance is cold-cooled water-damp cloud Qi transmitted from Quanliao (SI18). Upon reaching this point, the cloud Qi condenses into rain and falls to the Earth level. The intensity of the rain is greater than at Quanliao, sounding audible, and the Jing-Water injected into the Earth level is like flowing into the Earth-level palace where liquids reside, hence the name Tinggong.
2) Duosuo Wen, Duowen. Duo means large. Suo is a modifier. Wen means to hear. The meaning of the name is that the Earth-level destination into which the Qi and Blood flows at this point is a hollow space, producing echoes that are loud and long. The rationale is the same as for Tinggong.
3) Meeting Point of Hand-Shaoyang, Foot-Shaoyang, and Hand-Taiyang Meridians. The Qi and Blood substance at this point includes Jing-Water flowing from the Earth level of Ermen (TE21) of the Hand-Shaoyang Meridian and Jing-Water flowing from the Earth level of Tongziliao (GB1) of the Foot-Shaoyang Meridian. Thus, this point is the meeting point of the Hand-Shaoyang, Foot-Shaoyang, and Hand-Taiyang meridians.
Qi and Blood Characteristics: The substance is Jing-Water of the Earth level.
Running Rule: Injects from the Heaven level of the Earth to the Earth level of the Earth.
Function: Recovers Earth-level Jing-Water and导引s it into the interior.
Treatment Method: For Cold patterns, first sedate then tonify; for Heat patterns, use sedation.
VII. Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang: Abundant in Blood, Scarce in Qi
The Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang is abundant in Blood and scarce in Qi. The operational change of Qi and Blood substances is a process of transforming from liquid to gas and back to liquid.
1) Jingming (BL1) - Meeting Point of Hand-Taiyang, Foot-Taiyang, Foot-Yangming, Yin-Qiao, Yang-Qiao, and Du Meridians.
Aliases: Neizao, Leikong, Leikong, Leiqiang, Maziwai.
Acupoint Meaning: Blood of the Bladder Meridian is delivered to the eyes here.
[Explanation of Names]
1) Jingming. Jing refers to the eye, indicating the location and the primary target of the Qi and Blood at this point. Ming means brightness. The name Jingming indicates that the eyes become bright after receiving Qi and Blood from the Bladder Meridian. This is the first acupoint of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Its Qi and Blood source is the ascending Qi and Blood from the interior Bladder Meridian, which is liquid formed from the gaseous matter that ascended after absorbing heat in the interior Bladder Meridian, i.e., blood. The blood of the Bladder Meridian is supplied to the eyes from this point; the eyes receive blood and gain vision, becoming bright and clear, hence the name Jingming.
2) Neizao. Neizao simply denotes that the location of this point is the inner canthus of the eye, with no deeper meaning.
3) Leikong, Leikong, Leiqiang. Lei means tear fluid. Kong means pore. Kong and Qiang mean cavity. The meaning of these names is that the Qi and Blood of the Bladder Meridian transported outward from this point is an important source of fluid for moistening the eyes. This point belongs to the Bladder Meridian; compared to Qi and Blood ascending to the head and face from other meridians, its Qi and Blood characteristics are colder. It is a crucial root for promoting the transformation of gaseous matter into liquid. The eyes receive this liquid, becoming moistened and able to move freely, hence the names Leikong, Leikong, and Leiqiang.
4) Maziwai. Mazi refers to the inner angle of the eye socket. Wai means exterior. The name Maziwai indicates that the cold Qi of this point causes the Yang Qi on the exterior of the eyes to cool and descend into liquid. The rationale is the same as for Leikong.
