Figure of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian
The gallbladder weighs three taels and three zhu, is three cun in length, and is located between the short lobes of the liver. It holds three he of essence juice (jingzhi). The *Suwen* states: "The gallbladder is the official of uprightness; decisiveness arises from it."
The *Ben Cang* chapter states: "The liver corresponds to the nails. If the nails are thick and yellow in color, the gallbladder is thick; if the nails are thin and red in color, the gallbladder is thin; if the nails are hard and blue in color, the gallbladder's qi is urgent; if the nails are soft and red in color, the gallbladder's qi is slow; if the nails are straight with normal luster and no constraint, the gallbladder's qi is upright; if the nails are withered, ugly, black in color, and have many lines, the gallbladder's qi is knotted."
The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian has 43 acupoints. Tongziliao (GB1) is near Tinghui (GB2). Kemuzhuren (Shangguan, GB12) gathers at Hanyan (GB5), while Xuanlu (GB6) and Xuanli (GB7) are anterior to Qubin (GB7). Descending from Shuai Gu (GB8) and Tianchong (GB9), one sees the forms of Fubai (GB10) and Qiaoyin (GB11). Wanggu (GB12) is exposed, followed by Benshen (GB13) and Yangbai (GB14). Linqi (Zulinqi, GB41) appears, then Mucuang (GB15) and Lianzhu (likely Chengling or adjacent point). Zhengying (GB17) and Chengling (GB18) follow behind. Naokong (GB19) succeeds, and Lingdao (note: likely a textual variant or error for a neck/head point like Fengchi contextually, but translated as per text) is settled. Fengchi (GB20), Jianjing (GB21), Yuanye (Zhieren, GB22) are present. Zhiren (GB24), Riyue (GB25), Jingmen (GB25) are listed. Dai Mai (GB26) passes through Wushu (GB27), continued by Weidao (GB28). Huantiao (GB30) and Fengshi (GB31) reach Zhongdu (GB32). Passing Yangguan (GB33) to reach Yanglingquan (GB34), up to Yangjiao (GB35) and Waixiu (GB36). Guangming (GB37), Yangfu (GB38), and Xuanzhong (GB39) can be viewed. Qiuxu (GB40), Zulinqi (GB41), and Diwuhui (GB42) are noted. Xiaxi (GB43) and Qiaoyin (GB44/GB45 depending on counting, text says Qiaoyin completes meridian), thus the Gallbladder Meridian is complete.
The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian has 43 points, with 20 head points divided into three segments. Starting from Tongziliao (GB1) to Fengchi (GB20), the cumulative count is stated in order. Tongziliao (GB1) is five fen from the eye corner; seek Tinghui (GB2) in the depression anterior to the ear (slightly anterior to the ear, one cun below Shangguan). Kemuzhuren is another name for Shangguan (GB12); there is an opening when the mouth opens in the bone rising anterior to the ear. The two points Hanyan (GB5) and Xuanlu (GB6) are below the upper border of Naokong and under the curved angle (Naokong is below Hanyan and Xuanlu, above the curved angle). The position of Xuanli (GB7) differs here; it is above the lower border of Naokong and above the curved angle. Qubin (GB7) is in the depression at the corner of the hairline above the ear (depression in the curved corner of the hairline above the ear). Shuaigu (GB8) is placed one and a half cun above the ear (this point is slightly above the ear). Tianchong (GB9) is two cun entering the hairline behind the ear. Fubai (GB10) is between one cun entering the hairline (also slightly behind the ear). Qiaoyin (GB11) is the point at the occipital bone; there is a connection of emptiness above Wanggu (GB12) (above Wanggu, below the occipital bone, empty upon shaking). Wanggu (GB12) is where the hairline enters behind the ear; measure four fen and remember this. Benshen (GB13) is three cun lateral to Shenting (GV24), entering the hairline one cun, tied to the side of the ear. Yangbai (GB14) is one cun above the eyebrow, using Linqi (Zulinqi, GB41) at five fen above the hairline (above the eye, directly entering the hairline five fen in the depression). One cun above the hairline is Dangyang (GB16); one and a half cun above is Mucuang (GB15). Zhengying (GB17) is two and a half cun above the hairline; Chengling (GB18) is four cun above; Naokong (GB19) is five and a half cun above; Fengchi (GB20) is in the depression of the hairline behind the ear (behind the ear, posterior to Fengfu (GV16), below Naokong, in the hairline depression).
(Herein counts twenty points, divided into three folds moving outward. The first fold starts from Tongziliao (GB1) to Wanggu (GB12); the second fold turns outward from Wanggu (GB12) up to Yangbai (GB14) meeting Jingming (BL1); the third fold goes upward from Jingming (BL1) following Zulinqi (GB41) and Fengchi (GB20). Because the points curve outward significantly, making measurement difficult, these twenty points are described in sequence here.) The song says: One Tongziliao, two Tinghui; three Kemuzhuren, four Hanyan; five Xuanlu, six Xuanli; seven follows Qubin. Eight Shuaigu, nine Tianchong; ten Fubai follows its point; eleven Qiaoyin also succeeds; twelve Wanggu ends the first fold. Thirteen begins with Benshen; fourteen Yangbai follows the second fold; fifteen Zulinqi is the point below the eye; sixteen Mucuang is suitable; seventeen Zhengying, eighteen Chengling; nineteen Naohu (Note: Text says Naohu, likely error for Naokong or similar, translated as Naohu/GV16 contextually or typo for Naokong), twenty Fengchi. Measure carefully according to the sequence, and I know the head points of the Gallbladder Meridian. Seek Jianjing (GB21) in the depression on the shoulder, one and a half cun anterior to the large bone (depression on the shoulder, above Quepen, one and a half cun anterior to the clavicle/acromion; press with three fingers, in the depression of the middle finger). Yuanye (Zhiren, GB22) is three cun below the axilla; Zhiren (GB24) is judged five fen below Qimen (LR14). Qimen (LR14) is actually the opening point of the Liver Meridian, four and a half cun away from Juque (CV14). Riyue (GB25) is five fen below Qimen (LR14). Jingmen (GB25) is bound by the waist below the monitoring bone (below the monitoring bone, in the waist at the root of the costal margin flanking the spine, the Mu-Point of the Kidney). Dai Mai (GB26) is eighteen [units/cun implied] below Zhangmen (LR13); Wushu (GB27) penetrates four cun eight fen below Zhangmen (Wushu is three cun from Dai Mai, four cun eight fen below the costal margin). Weidao (GB28) is five cun three [fen?] below Zhangmen; Juliao (GB29) is eight cun three [fen?] below Zhangmen. Zhangmen (LR13) is originally a Liver Meridian point, contained nine cun lateral to Xiawan (CV10). Huantiao (GB30) is in the hollow of the Bi Shu (hip pivot) (in the hip pivot, lie on side, flex upper leg, extend lower leg, use right hand to feel the point, shake left to locate); flexing upper and extending lower yields the same point. Fengshi (GB31) reaches the tip of the middle finger when hanging down; Zhongdu (GB32) is discussed at five cun above the knee (lateral thigh, five cun above knee, in the depression between muscles). Yangguan (GB33) is three cun above Yanglingquan (GB34); Yanglingquan (GB34) follows one cun below the knee. Yangjiao (GB35) is seven cun above the external malleolus on the fibula; Waixiu (GB36) is used at six cun above the ankle. Guangming (GB37) is at five cun above the ankle; Yangfu (GB38) is at four cun above the ankle; Xuanzhong (GB39) is at three cun above the ankle. Qiuxu (GB40) is in the depression anterior to the ankle. From here to Xiaxi (GB43) is four cun five fen; this is the efficacy of the Yuan-Source point of the Gallbladder Meridian. Zulinqi (GB41) is one and a half cun posterior to Xiaxi (GB43); Diwuhui (GB42) is one cun away from Xiaxi (GB43). Xiaxi (GB43) is between the divergent bones of the toes; Qiaoyin (GB44/45) is at the tips of the fourth and fifth toes. (The points of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian on the head are the most difficult to find; if you do not know how to search, beware of disaster turning instantly. Total 43 points, 86 points bilateral.)
