Obtain blood from the tip of the tail of a young male pig, using approximately half a cup or one cup. Add a small amount of *Bingpian* (Borneol) and one *qian* of *Chensha* (Cinnabar), grind them together into a paste, and take it dissolved in *Muxiang Tang* (Costus Root Decoction).
*Hupo* (Amber) 5 *qian*, *Chensha* (Cinnabar) 3 *qian*, *Xionghuang* (Realgar) 7 *qian* (fried in sesame oil for twelve hours, then boiled in water radish juice), *Danning* (Arisaema with Bile) 2 *liang* 1 *qian*, *Jiangcan* (Bombyx Batryticatus) [processed], *Wenba* [processed], [processed] on fire. Process according to the above methods, grind each herb into fine powder, form pills using steamed wheat cake dough, coat with gold foil, and administer with decoction of *Dixin* (Nujia/Sparganium Rhizome) and *Bohe* (Mint).
"Bao" means to protect; "Long" refers to the Liver organ. When the Liver is startled, the Hun soul ascends, leading to convulsions, spasms, and muteness. This formula is used to extinguish wind and resolve phlegm, calm fright and restore speech, thereby conserving Liver Qi, suppressing the glottis, and dispelling wind pathogens.
Take one large dried *Chanshu* (Toad), collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, air-dried, and calcined to retain its properties. Take one *qian* of *Zaojiao* (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), with skin and fibers removed, calcined to retain its properties. Take three *qian* of *Haige Fen* (Clam Shell Powder), processed by water levigation. Grind the above ingredients into powder. Use aged *Shenqu* (Medicated Leaven) to make a thin paste, form pills the size of millet seeds. Take 30-40 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, washed down with rice water. Administer twice daily.
In children, sallow complexion and emaciation, along with abdominal distension due to *Gan* accumulation, are all caused by cold phlegm and food stagnation. Treatment employs the Toad, which has spiritual properties, lives in burrows, eats insects, and primarily kills *Gan* parasites and dissipates stubborn heat.
Note: Qian Zhongyang's *Rusheng Wan* formula consists of *Bai Wuyi* (Alpinia Katsumadai Rhizome), *Chuan Huanglian* (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome), and *Hu Huanglian* (Swertia Milesii Herb), each 2 *liang* 5 *qian*; *Shijunzi* (Quisqualis Indica Fruit) 1 *liang*; *Shexiang* (Musk) 5 *fen*. Boil dried Toad in wine to make a paste, form into pills. This is another method. It treats Liver and Spleen *Gan* heat with dryness of body fluids, suitable for cases with severe heat.
*Bohe Ye* (Mint Leaf) 1 *qian*, *Gancao* (Licorice Root) 5 *fen*, *Qianghuo* (Notopterygium Root) 1 *qian*, *Fangfeng* (Saposhnikovia Root) 1 *qian*, *Danggui* (Angelica Sinensis Root) 1 *qian*, *Chuanxiong* (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) 5 *fen*, *Shanzhiren* (Gardenia Seed, stir-fried until black) 1 *qian*. Grind the above into powder. Take 2-3 *qian* per dose, taken long after meals, mixed with boiling water.
During epidemic warm diseases, symptoms include red eyes, swollen eyelids, and photophobia. Wind pathogens require dispersing the exterior; heat pathogens require purging the interior. When wind and heat combine, use *Xi Gan San* (Liver-Washing Powder) to treat both the exterior and interior simultaneously. *Bohe* and *Gancao* clear and benefit the Upper Jiao and vent the Liver Qi, as the Liver opens into the eyes. *Qianghuo* and *Fangfeng* raise the Qi of the Taiyang Meridian, addressing the connection between the Taiyang Meridian and red eyes.
