Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) two liang (remove nodes), Lianqiao Radix (Lianyao, 连轺) two liang (Lianyao is the root of Forsythiae Fructus. Tao Hongjing said: It is not used in prescriptions, and no one recognizes it. Su Gong also demoted it to the category of herbs.), Red Bean (Chixiaodou, 赤小豆) two sheng, Shengzi Baipi (Raw Catalpa Bark, 生梓白皮) one sheng (cut, wrapped in cloth), Apricot Seed (Xingren, 杏仁) forty pieces (remove skin and tips), Jujube (Dazao, 大枣) twelve pieces (split open), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 生姜) three liang (sliced), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) two liang (honey-fried).
The above eight ingredients are decocted with one dou of rainwater (Laoshui, 潦水). First, boil Ephedrae Herba until it boils twice, remove the foam on the surface, add all other herbs, and decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid. Divide into three warm doses, and finish taking them within half a day.
Mahuang Lianqiao Chixiaodou Decoction (Cinnamon Twig and Ephedra Combined with Forsythia Root and Red Bean Decoction) is a method for resolving both exterior and interior conditions. Whether the heat originates from the Taiyang channel or the Yangming channel, if it combines internally with the dampness of the Taiyin spleen, it forms stagnant heat leading to jaundice.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) six liang (remove nodes), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝) two liang (remove bark), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) two liang (honey-fried), Apricot Seed (Xingren, 杏仁) forty pieces (remove skin and tips), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 生姜) three liang (sliced). The above seven ingredients are decocted with nine sheng of water. First, boil Ephedrae Herba until the volume reduces by two sheng, remove the foam on the surface, add all other herbs, and decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs, and take one sheng warm.
The combination of Mahuang, Guizhi, and Yu Pi Tang repeatedly forms a prescription named after "Dragon." Originally a pungent-hot agent, adding Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) transforms it into a pungent-cool agent, just as Dragon possesses a yang body nature, using stone (Gypsum) to reach downwards.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) three liang (remove nodes), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝) two liang (remove bark), Paeonia Root (Shaoyao, 芍药) three liang, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, 干姜) three liang, Asarum (Xixin, 细辛) three liang, Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi, 五味子) half sheng, Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) three liang (honey-fried). The above eight ingredients are decocted with one dou of water. First, boil Ephedrae Herba until the volume reduces by two sheng, remove the foam on the surface, add all other herbs, and decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs, and take one sheng warm.
Xiao Qinglong Decoction (Minor Green Dragon Decoction) treats cold affecting both the exterior and interior of the Taiyang channel. Its formula principle is completely different from Da Qinglong Decoction's treatment of interior heat. Because cold-water rebelliously ascends, it involves the Shaoyin kidney channel, leading to kidney deficiency... Paeonia Root... guiding herbs... used to astringe.
Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝) one liang sixteen zhu (remove bark), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) one liang (remove nodes), Paeonia Root (Shaoyao, 芍药) one liang, Apricot Seed (Xingren, 杏仁) twenty-four grains (remove skin and tips), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) one liang (honey-fried). The above seven ingredients are decocted with five sheng of water. First, boil Ephedrae Herba for one or two boils, remove the foam on the surface, add all other herbs, and decoct to obtain one sheng eight he of liquid. Remove the dregs, and take six he warm.
The mutual repetition of Guizhi and Mahuang; commentators interpret this as a dual-resolution method. This is measuring Zhang Zhongjing's profound intent with shallow understanding, which is truly lamentable. Why not observe its method... Yin and Yang... becoming small.
