A widow fell ill due to long-term depression, with amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), body heat feeling like roasting, and sudden profuse hematemesis (vomiting blood) like a gushing spring. Hemostatic drugs were ineffective. I used juice extracted from crushed *Imperatae Rhizoma* (Mao Hua Gen) mixed with finely ground *Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum* (Chen Xiang), administered orally at approximately 5 qian. Daily, strong vinegar was stored in a bottle and heated over fire; the steam was inhaled through both nostrils. Only then did the bleeding subside, hematemesis ceased, and menstruation resumed.
For newborn infants, if breastfeeding and feeding are conducted properly: "Ru" refers to breast milk, and "Bu" refers to solid food. One should not give solid food immediately after breastfeeding, nor breastfeed immediately after giving solid food. Because infants have weak spleen and stomach functions, simultaneous intake of milk and food is difficult to digest. In early infancy, this leads to vomiting; after one year of age, it forms "Ru Pi" (milk accumulation), which knots in the abdomen causing pain. Thus, large accumulations are called "Pi," small ones "Ji," and "Gan Qi" (infantile malnutrition syndrome) begins here. (From *Yin Wei Fang*)
Infants should be checked frequently in windless areas for white membranous patches on the tongue and inner cheeks (oral thrush). If present, quickly scrape them off with fingernails; if they regrow, scrape again. Also check under the tongue to prevent the formation of "Chong She" (double tongue/anterior lingual frenulum inflammation). These conditions result from the mother consuming fried, roasted, fatty foods, alcohol, or hot-natured herbs during pregnancy. (From *Chan Ru Qing Yu Ji*)
When a child is first born and does not cry or suckle, it is likely because wind pathogen entered through the umbilical stump during cord cutting, traveling up along the throat to the lower gums, where small blisters resembling yellow millet grains appear. The pain is unbearable, hence the lack of crying or sucking. Simply puncture the blister with a fingernail to release a drop of yellow pus, and the condition resolves. I later taught this method to others, saving several children. (From *Xi Shang Fu Tan*)
During the Xuande reign, Physician-in-waiting Qian Ying treated the nine-month-old grandson of the Marquis of Ningyang, who suffered from fright palpitations, frequent crying, and sweating, with no effect from various treatments. Upon final examination, Qian Ying ordered the child to sit on the ground and play with scooped water. The fright and crying stopped immediately. When asked, he explained: "It was late spring; the child was wrapped in thick clothes and heavy curtains, kept close to the body, causing internal heat stagnation without venting. Proximity to water suppressed the fire pathogen, and contact with earth balanced the zang organ qi." Thus, the child recovered without medication.
Zhou Bida stated in *Er Lao Tang Za Zhi* that Kaiyuan Tongbao coins are most effective for treating infant acute fright convulsions when ground in water and taken in small amounts, showing miraculous effects. I surmise that infant heart-heat causes fright, while liver-wind causes convulsions. This aligns with the principle of using Metal to control Wood (Liver) when Wood pathogen insults Earth (Spleen/Stomach), which seems reasonable.
Recently, a young child accidentally swallowed a lead weight while playing. A Hu monk fed him half a jin of maltose syrup, and the weight passed out through the anus with feces. The monk said, "For any accidental ingestion of five metals, this can be consumed." (From *Jin Feng Wen Lue*)
