Zhu Sigu, a native of Meizhou, fell ill at the age of thirty. He was unable to eat and vomited upon smelling meat or fish. He could only consume plain rice washed down with freshly boiled soup prepared in a large cauldron, eating frequently. Physicians were unable to cure him.
Shi Zaizhi stated: "It is lamentable and astonishing that commoners, who do not study medical classics, presumptuously attempt to treat others' diseases. Your condition is described in the *Suwen* (Basic Questions) as 'Shi Gua' (Food Hanging). In a healthy person, the six lobes of the lungs expand and cover the spleen below. When the mother (spleen/earth) and child (lung/metal) qi are harmonious, one can eat. If there is any deviation, the lungs cannot expand, causing damage to the spleen, thus leading to anorexia." He then prescribed a formula aimed at clearing lung qi and moistening lung dryness. After three days of taking it, the patient found the smell of meat fragrant and ate it with great relish. This incident was recorded in Song dynasty biographies. However, upon examining the texts of Qihuang (traditional Chinese medicine classics), I found no mention of "Shi Gua." It may be a fabrication by the recorder, or perhaps Mr. Shi fabricated it to deceive and confuse the world. Both possibilities remain unknown.
Some people point to individuals whose eyebrows and hair are white as snow while their muscles remain pure white, claiming this results from conception on the Day of She (She Ri), hence calling males "She Gong" and females "She Po." This theory is incorrect. According to Xu Xun's *Tai Yu Chan Hua Lun* (Treatise on Fetal Nurturing and Childbirth Transformation), conception occurs when the mother's menstrual blood is flowing and Ying blood (nutritive blood) is overflowing; thus, the fetus has pure white muscle tissue. This aligns with what is stated in Chu Shi's *Yi Shu*: "If blood precedes the skin and flesh, the body becomes white." Another question arises: why do some have completely white hair and blurred vision? The Classics state: "Hair is the surplus of blood," and "The liver receives blood and enables vision." Now, during menstruation, blood is depleted, leading to liver deficiency. Hair loses its nourishment, and the eyes lose their sustenance, resulting in these symptoms. This logic is clear and sufficient to dispel the confusion of the ignorant (from *Xi Shang Fu Tan*).
Wang Jinggong (Wang Anshi) explained the character "Tong" (pain/blockage): Pain arises when flow should be smooth but is obstructed. Modern physicians often use methods to unblock and purify the zang-fu organs for pain, stating "All pains are excess conditions; pain diminishes with purgation." Laypeople interpret "purge" (li) as downward evacuation. Suppose pain is in the exterior, it is an excess condition; if in the interior, it is excess; if in blood and qi, it is also excess. Therefore, exterior excess is cured by sweating; interior excess is cured by purging; blood and qi stagnation is cured by dispersing and promoting circulation. How can "purge" be limited to downward evacuation? "Li" should be interpreted as "Tong" (unblocked/free flow). Thus, the Classic says: "When there is free flow, there is no pain; where there is pain, there is no free flow." This is the meaning.
Kongtongzi said: In summer, Yang qi dissipates outward, while Yin cold hides within. This hidden Yin is like a thread, latent waiting for its time, similar to how Yang returns at Winter Solstice. Observing well water reveals that hidden Yin lies deep in the abyss. Summerheat illness is treated with Da Shun San (Great Harmony Powder), containing ginger and cinnamon, which are hot-natured herbs. These were specifically designed for those who overconsumed ice water and fruits, not for treating hidden Yin. This reflects Danxi's view that "Yin" implies deficiency rather than cold pathogen. Interpreting it as cold pathogen is a grave error. The Classic states "Nourish Yang in Spring and Summer, Nourish Yin in Autumn and Winter." Wang Taipu annotated this as consuming warm foods in spring and cold foods in summer, embodying the principle of suppressing excessive Yang and supporting deficient Yin.
