Another case involved the decoction of Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) in high concentration for one dose; after ingestion, the swelling and pain immediately subsided. These two substances (Kansui Root and Licorice Root) are inherently incompatible. It was necessary for two people to purchase them separately and store them apart; they must never be mixed. Han Yong, an official at the Qingliu Hall, suffered from this condition. After one dose, seven or eight parts of the illness were eliminated, and after a second dose, he was cured. He obtained this method from a cattle and horse broker. The physician's intention was precisely to utilize their antagonistic properties. Thus, Kansui Root (Gansui, 甘遂) was applied externally, while Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) was taken internally to guide the therapeutic effect, achieving results akin to the principle of a lodestone attracting iron needles. (Both cases from *Yizong Jicheng*.)
Xue Lizhai treated Yu Ju-ren Dijí, who was twenty years old, suffering from swelling and pain in the legs and knees, unable to extend or flex them. Administration of internal-strengthening (Tuo-li) herbs aggravated the condition. He was cured using Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Decoction to Overcome Pathogenic Factors) modified with Areca Seed (Binglang, 槟榔), Quince (Mugua, 木瓜), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu, 柴胡), Perilla Leaf (Zisu, 紫苏), Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu, 苍术), and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai, 黄柏).
Huang Jinfang treated Li Mou for Hongxiangjiao (a condition characterized by foot swelling, pain, and ulceration). The pain was so severe that it could not be touched, and the area was abnormally hot. Additionally, the scrotum was dry and cracked, with unbearable itching. The pulse on the left hand was extremely wiry and rapid, while the right hand's pulse was slightly weaker. Dietary intake remained normal, but there was frequent sensation of hollow hunger. At night, he was irritable and restless, and bowel and bladder movements were not very smooth. This indicated an activation of internal fire, constrained externally by wind pathogens. Pungent, drying, wind-chasing, and damp-expelling herbs should not be used. Instead, the Liver and Gallbladder fire should be severely purged, which would naturally settle the foot pain. Xie Qing Tang (Drain Green Decoction) was administered. Its Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi, 栀子) and Gentian Root (Longdancao, 龙胆草) clear the fire of the Jueyin Liver channel; Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) expels external wind; and Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄) removes internal heat obstruction in the stomach and intestines. Symptoms decreased after one dose, and upon the second dose, bowel movement became smooth, leading to recovery. Subsequently, Liu Wei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) was prescribed to nourish Yin as a follow-up treatment.
Lei Zuojí had a constitution that was inherently cold, compounded by alcoholism. This caused the True Fire of Shaoyin to float upward due to alcohol, leaving the soles of the feet unprotected by Yang Qi. Upon exposure to cold, his feet could not touch the ground. In the spring of Jiashen year of Qianlong's reign, due to cramping pain in the leg tendons, someone advised him to consume Laoguancao (Old Vine Herb), which resulted in intensified foot pain and immobility. Physician Huang examined him, noting that the feet felt cold yet warm simultaneously, requiring firm pressing with warm hands to alleviate discomfort. There was no appetite, and cold saliva was frequently vomited. Processed Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, 半夏) fried in ginger juice was selected, heavily supplemented with Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝), Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子), Curculigo Rhizome (Xianmao, 仙茅), Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香), Myrrh (Moyao, 没药), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong, 杜zhong), and Dipsacus Root (Xuduan, 续断). These were decocted in large doses and administered, resulting in a cure.
Wang Hongxu treated Hexixiang (Crane Knee Wind, characterized by knee joint enlargement resembling a crane's knee) using fresh Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 白芷). It was decocted in wine into a paste. Each day, it was taken orally with aged wine, and three qian of the paste were applied topically to the affected area until the swelling resolved. Alternatively, Yanghe Tang (Yanghe Decoction) could be taken internally, while white mustard seed powder mixed with fermented rice wine was applied externally, which also led to resolution.
