Formulas for Treating Leprosy (Lai Bing).
Initially, one may feel numbness and insensitivity of the skin, or suffer from unbearable itching as if insects were crawling on it. One might also see objects in front of the eyes resembling hanging threads, or develop urticaria (urticarial rash) that is red and black. This condition requires immediate treatment.
Man Yi Jiu (Barbarian Wine), which is excellent.
For treating White Leprosy (Bai Lai):
Take five jin of Sophora flavescens root (Kushen), soak it in three dou of wine, and drink continuously without interruption. Additionally, take the bark and roots, powder them, and ingest the powder; this yields effective results.
Another formula: Take a thousand stalks of Artemisia argyi (Ai Ye), boil them strongly to extract the juice, use this juice to ferment yeast into wine, and drink regularly until slightly intoxicated. Yao Sengyuan also used this method.
Yao's Formula: Take one large Agkistrodon (Da Fu She), ensuring it is not injured. Soak it in wine: use one dou of wine for a large snake, or five sheng for a small one. Warm it over chaff fire until the snake sinks about one cun deep. Remove the snake, mix it with lard collected in the twelfth lunar month (Zha Lu Pig Fat), and apply to the sores; the disease will heal.
This formula also treats scrofula (Shu Li, lymph node tuberculosis) and various malignant sores.
Take two jin of Sophora flavescens root (Kushen), two liang of Vespa nest (Lu Feng Fang), two jin of yeast (Qu), and three dou of water. Soak the herbs for two nights, then strain off the dregs. Add two sheng of broomcorn millet (Shu Mi), brew until ripe, and drink slowly. Take three times daily. Another version adds Pangolin scales (Chuan Shan Jia), which is better.
Attached Formulas
*Bencao Tuiyuan* (Holy Essential Prescriptions): Treats severe wind diseases, leprosy, causing bone and flesh decay, pain and soreness in all joints, loss of eyebrows and hair, and generalized itching and pain.
Use Pedicularis (Ma Xian Hao), finely chopped, stir-fried into powder. Take two qian bi (measurements) mixed with warm wine before fasting and before evening meals.
Another formula: Treats severe wind diseases to promote regrowth of eyebrows and hair.
Use leaves of Platycladus orientalis (Ce Bai Ye), steamed and sun-dried nine times, pounded, sifted into powder. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of Chinese quince seeds (Wu Tong Zi). Take three times daily and once at night. Swallow five or ten pills with warm water; hair will grow back within one hundred days.
Another formula: Treats severe wind disease causing loss of facial hair and scalp hair.
Use ash from mulberry branches (Sang Chai Hui), leach with hot water to obtain juice for washing the face. Use soybean water slurry to dissolve Zelu (Phytolacca acinosa) ash; this is superior. Next, use cooked water to soak mung beans (Lu Dou), peel them clean, repeating no more than ten times, which is good. Wash head every two days, wash face daily.
Another formula: Treats White Leprosy (Bai Lai).
Use Veronica officinalis (Ma Bian Cao), quantity unlimited, powdered. Before each meal, take one qian bi mixed with a decoction of Schizonepeta (Jing Jie) and Mentha (Bo He).
*Shi Liao* (Food Therapy): Treats leprosy.
Take one jin of white honey and two jin of fresh ginger, pound and extract juice. First weigh a copper pot to know its weight, then add honey to melt it. Weigh five jin of ginger juice and add it to the honey. Simmer gently until the ginger juice is fully absorbed. Weigh the honey again; if the weight has not decreased, the medicine is ready. For those who have suffered from leprosy for thirty years, take one pill the size of a jujube in the early morning, three times a day. Drink with wine freely. Avoid raw/cold foods, vinegar, slippery foods, and pungent odors. The efficacy is manifold, saving many lives, too numerous to list.
*Waitai Miyao* (Secret Essentials of the Outer Cabinet): Treats malignant wind diseases.
Resin of Pinus (Song Zhi), refined by dipping twenty times in cold water. Make into honey pills, take two liang when hungry. Take three times daily. For those whose nasal bridge has collapsed, take two liang; heal within one hundred days. Abstain from salt and sexual activity. *Baopuzi* records:
Zhao Qu suffered from leprosy for years; physicians could not cure him. His family left food and abandoned him in a mountain cave. Zhao Qu lamented his misfortune, weeping bitterly. After a month, an immortal passed by the cave, saw him, pitied him, and asked for details. Knowing he was extraordinary, Zhao Qu kowtowed and begged for life. The immortal took medicine from his bag, gave it to him, and instructed him to take it. After over a hundred days, the sores healed, complexion improved, and skin became moist. When the immortal visited again, Zhao Qu thanked him for saving his life and requested the prescription. The immortal said, "This is pine resin, abundant here. You can refine and take it. Long-term use makes the body light and strength increase a hundredfold; you can climb heights and traverse dangers without fatigue for a whole day. Living to a hundred years, teeth do not fall out, hair does not turn white, and at night while sleeping, you often see light shining from your body, large as a mirror."
*Ganying Shenxian Zhuan* (Biographies of Spirits and Immortals Responding to Feelings) records:
Cui Yan served in the Left Personal Cavalry. One day he fell ill; his eyes were dim, unable to distinguish people even at close range. Eyebrows and hair fell out, and the nasal bridge collapsed. Skin had sores like tinea. All considered it a malignant disease incurable. Later, serving as a minor official in Luogu Valley, Yangzhou, on his way back to the garrison, he met a Daoist priest emerging from the valley. The priest did not state his name but gave him a formula:
One to two jin of Gleditsia sinensis thorn (Zao Jiao Ci), burn to ash, steam for a long time, dry, and grind into powder. After meals, take one qian bi mixed with a strong decoction of Rheum palmatum (Da Huang) prepared with tea/water. After ten days of taking it, eyebrows and hair regrow, skin becomes smooth and moist, the disease heals, and vision becomes twice as sharp. After obtaining this formula, he returned to the mountains and disappeared.
*Chaoye Qianzai* (Miscellaneous Records from the Court and the Wild) records:
A person in Shangzhou suffered from severe wind disease; his family despised him. They built a thatched hut for him in the mountains. A black snake fell into a wine jar. Unaware, the patient drank the wine and gradually recovered. There was still snake bone at the bottom of the jar. Only then did he understand the cause. Dao Jin notes according to Li Zhao's *Guoshi Bu* (Supplement to Official History): Li Zhou's younger brother suffered from wind disease. Someone suggested snake wine could treat wind. Thus, he sought a black snake, placed it alive in a jar, and fermented it with yeast. After several days, snake sounds continued. When the wine matured, the aroma was intense. He drank a full cup. Suddenly, his body turned into water, leaving only hair. The account in *Chaoye Qianzai* should probably not be lightly adopted.
