Ge's method for treating young people with abundant Qi and blood, suffering from facial sores.
Hufen (Lead carbonate), Shuiyin (Mercury), and Zhu Zhi (Lard from the twelfth lunar month) are mixed, heated, and ground until the mercury dissipates. Apply the powder to the face at dusk, and wipe it off in the morning. Do not wash with water; reapply at dusk. After three applications, the condition will heal. Yao's formula is the same.
Another formula: Apply Milin Zhi (Fat of sika deer); the condition will heal immediately.
Another formula: Soak a chicken egg in Ku Jiu (Vinegar) for three nights. Soften and extract the albumen, then apply it.
*Ju Yin Xiao Fang* (Prescriptions of the Recluse): Formula for sores.
Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) and Mu Li (Oyster Shell), each two liang, are pounded, sifted, and mixed with water to form a paste. Apply this paste to seal the sore. Using concentrated juice as a powder is highly effective.
Dong Kui San (Winter Mallow Powder).
Dong Kui Zi (Seed of Winter Mallow), Bai Zi Ren (Seed of Oriental Arborvitae), Fu Ling (Poria), and Gua Ban (Seeds of Trichosanthes), each one liang. Grind these four ingredients into a powder. Take one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure) after meals, three times a day, washed down with wine.
Formula for treating rosacea on the face and nose.
Zhen Zhu (Pearl), Hufen (Lead carbonate), and Shuiyin (Mercury) are mixed in equal parts with Zhu Zhi (Lard) and applied. Alternatively, Lu E Shi (Cormorant droppings) mixed with lard from the twelfth lunar month can be used. This is also highly effective.
For those with many facial spots or spots resembling quail eggs:
Boil Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) in vinegar and frequently wipe the face with it; the spots will gradually disappear.
Another formula: Take a fresh chicken egg, pierce it, and remove the yolk. Add one liang of Zhu Mo (Cinnabar powder) inside and seal it with lacquer. Another version says to seal it with wax and incubate it under a hen. Extract the contents and apply to the face; the spots will vanish instantly, leaving the skin white. Another formula from *Xi Wang Mu Zhen Zhong* (Pillow Book of the Queen Mother of the West), used by Consort Zhang of the Chen Dynasty: One egg and two liang of Dan Sha (Cinnabar), ground together. It is said to place a white hen underneath to incubate it, similar to the previous method. The egg makes the facial skin tight and smooth. Cinnabar imparts a red hue. After no more than five applications, the face becomes white as jade, radiant and beautiful.
For residual symptoms after an acute illness, where the face looks like it is covered in rice flour:
Roast Fan Shi (Alum), mix with wine, and apply. Yao says no more than three applications are needed.
Another formula: Bai Lian (Bark of Chinese Tallow Tree) two parts, Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) half a part, Ji Shi Bai (White excrement of chickens) one part. Pound them together, mix with honey. Dilute with water and wipe the face; this is good.
Formula for treating ulcers on the head and face.
Xiong Huang (Realgar), Liu Huang (Sulfur), and Fan Shi (Alum) are ground into powder and mixed with Zhu Zhi (Lard) for application.
Another formula: Collect sap from holes in living trees and wipe the affected area. Mix Gui (Cinnamon Bark) powder and apply; do this several times a day.
Another formula: Cook snake shed skin until soft, grind it hundreds of times until hot, then discard it in the grass without looking back.
For treating darkened body and facial complexion, rough skin texture, and thick, ugly skin:
Finely pound Ling Yang Jing Gu (Tibia of Antelope) and mix with Ji Zi Bai (Egg white). Apply to the face. When dry, wash with the starch water from white rice. Within three days, the skin returns to its original state; this is miraculous.
Another formula: Wu Jing Zi (Seed of Turnip) two liang, Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) one liang. Pound them together. Break open Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit), remove seeds, and wrap five pig pancreases inside. Mix with strong wine and apply at night. In cold months, this serves as a hand and face cream. Another version adds Tu Gu Gen (Root of Smilax) one liang and seven large dates. Over time, the skin becomes fairer. Yao's formula uses five pig pancreases and is highly effective.
*Ju Yin Xiao Yan Fang* (Verified Prescriptions of the Recluse): Formula to whiten darkened faces and remove dullness.
Wou Yu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone), Xi Xin (Asarum), Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), and Jiao (Pepper), each two liang. Cut the five ingredients, soak in Ku Jiu (Vinegar) for three days. Then boil in Er Jin Niu Sui (Refined Beef Marrow) two jin until the vinegar smell dissipates. Use the resulting medicine as a face powder. Even those considered unattractive will appear exceptionally fresh and beautiful; this is a divine and subtle formula.
Another formula to make the face white as jade:
Yang Zhi (Sheep fat) and Gou Zhi (Dog fat), each one sheng, Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica) half a sheng, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) seven chi, Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) half a liang, and Wu Hui (Aconite Lateral Root) fourteen pieces. Decoct together. Once ready in a white vessel, apply to the face. In twenty days, changes occur such that even brothers would not recognize each other, let alone others.
Transmitted Effective Formula for Facial Transformation:
Zhen Zhu Xie (Pearl Dust) and Guang Ming Sha (Cinnabar) are separately ground thoroughly. Dong Gu (Winter Melon Seed) and Han Ren (Human Semen? Note: Likely a textual corruption or specific ingredient, often interpreted as a rare herb or seed in context, but literally "Han Ren") each two liang are also ground. Si Liang of Shuiyin (Mercury) is stored in a bag made of four or five layers of silk. Boil in a copper pot with Cu (Vinegar) and Jiang (Fermented grain liquid) over low heat for one night and one day. When ready, mix the mercury with Mian Zhi (Face Fat/Cream). Grind thoroughly until dissolved, then mix with pearl dust, cinnabar, and winter melon seed powder. Blend well and apply to the face.
Another formula for lack of facial luster, blackness, and wrinkles, for frequent use of face cream:
Xi Xin (Asarum), Wei Rui (Polygonatum Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Shu Yu (Dioscorea Rhizome), Bai Fu Zi (Typhonium Rhizome), Xin Yi (Magnolia Flower), Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), and Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica), each one liang. Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit) and Mu Lan Pi (Magnolia Bark), each one fen. Two sheng of refined Zhu Zhi (Lard). Cut the eleven ingredients, wrap in silk, and soak in a small amount of wine overnight. Add to the lard and decoct, lifting and lowering seven times. Set aside another piece of Bai Zhi, add it to the decoction, wait until it turns yellow, then strain. Squeeze out the juice and apply to the face. This secret is not passed on in *Qian Jin*. This ointment also treats metal wounds and hematemesis.
Formula to make facial skin thin and delicate like flowers:
Take the solid white tip of Lu Jiao (Deer Horn), grind it on a flat stone. Take Da Liang (one tael) of Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), pound it, sieve through fine silk, and mix with the deer horn juice. Stir to blend evenly. Every night, first wash the face with warm Jiang Shui (fermented grain water), wipe with soft cloth, apply white honey to the face, and pat with hands until the honey is fully absorbed and fingers are no longer sticky. Then apply the medicine. Wash again with warm fermented grain water at dawn. After two or three weeks, the complexion will be astonishing. Avoid wind and sun after applying medicine; be cautious.
Another formula for sudden onset of sores on the face:
Raw Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), peel and pound, mix with Ji Zi Bai (Egg white). Like pancake batter, wash the face at night, apply dry, and wash off in the morning for immediate healing. Yao's formula says to wipe off after one night.
Formula for dissolving facial acne and pimples, while achieving smooth and tight skin:
Tu Gu Gen (Root of Smilax), pound and sieve, mix with Jiang Shui (fermented grain water) to blend evenly. Wash face with Jiang Shui at night, apply medicine. Wash again in the morning. After one hundred days, the radiance will be dazzling, even causing spouses not to recognize each other.
Ge's Formula for Whitening via Oral Medication:
Take peach blossoms from three trees, dry in shade, and grind into powder. Take one fang cun bi before meals, three times a day. Yao says this also slims the waist.
Another formula: Bai Gu Zi Ren (Kernel of White Winter Melon Seed) five fen, Bai Yang Pi (White Poplar Bark) two fen, Tao Hua (Peach Blossom) four fen. Pound and grind. Take one fang cun bi after meals, three times a day. To whiten, add Gu Zi; to redden, add Tao Hua. In thirty days, the face becomes white; in fifty days, hands and feet become white. Another variant includes Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel) three fen and no Yang Pi.
Another formula: Nu Yuan (Herba Siegesbeckiae) three fen, Qian Dan (Red Lead) one fen. Grind into powder, take with vinegar-fermented grain liquid, one dao gui dose. Three times a day. Stools turn black in ten days, lacquer-black in eighteen to nineteen days, completely white in twenty-one days. Stop taking it then; going beyond results in excessive whiteness. For those over thirty, it is difficult to treat further. Avoid Five Pungent Spices during medication.
Another formula: Zhu Dan (Cinnabar) five liang, Tao Hua (Peach Blossom) three liang. Grind into powder. Take one fang cun bi with well water drawn at dawn. Three times a day. Effects noticed in ten days. In twenty days, extreme whiteness occurs, and small amounts of black fluid may be excreted.
Another formula: Bai Song Zhi (White Pine Resin) ten parts, Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) nine parts, Gan Qi (Dried Lacquer) five parts, roasted. Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) one part, processed. Gui Xin (Cinnamon Heart) two parts. Pound, sieve, and make honey pills. Take ten pills, three times a day. All parasites will be expelled, leading to plumpness and whiteness.
Another formula: Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Gui (Cinnamon), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Take one raw chicken egg, mix with one sheng of wine, warm, and take one fang cun bi. Effects in ten days, white and lustrous skin in one month.
Another formula for removing darkness:
Yang Dan (Sheep Gallbladder), Zhu Yi (Pig Pancreas), and Xi Xin (Asarum) in equal parts. Decoct for three boils and apply to the face. In the morning, wash with vinegar-fermented grain liquid.
Another formula: Fu Ling (Poria) and Bai Shi Zhi (White Kaolin) in equal parts. Mix with honey and apply, three times a day.
Formula for becoming plump and white after taking one type of medicine for one month:
Roast Da Dou Huang (Yellow Soybeans), pound like making bean paste residue. Take one da sheng of pure yellow [soybean meal], pound, sieve, and mix with refined Zhu Zhi (Lard) until cooked. Make pills. Take twenty pills with wine, twice a day. Gradually increase to thirty or forty pills. After consuming five sheng, within one month, appetite increases significantly, and the body becomes plump and white. Try it.
Formula for treating baldness and non-growth of beard and eyebrows:
Ma Zi Ren (Hemp Seed) three sheng, Qin Jiao (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) two he. Soak in Mi Gan Jiang Zhi (Rice washing water) overnight, strain. Bathe once a day; hair will grow two chi in one month.
Another formula: Man Jing Zi (Vitex Fruit) three fen, Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) two pieces, crushed. Decoct in seven sheng of wine in a sealed vessel for fourteen days. Use for bathing. Hair grows one chi in ten days. Avoid near the face to prevent unwanted hair growth.
Another formula: Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark) chopped, three or two sheng. Boil in water for five or six boils, strain. Wash beard and eyebrows frequently; they will stop falling out.
Another formula: Ma Zi Ren (Hemp Seed) three sheng, Bai Tong Ye (White Paulownia Leaf) one handful. Boil in rice washing water for five or six boils, strain. Wash with it; frequent use promotes growth.
Another formula: East-facing Sang Gen (Mulberry Root) three chi long. Steam it over the center of a steamer basket. Collect the juice from both ends and apply to beard and eyebrows for immediate healing.
Formula for yellowing beard and eyebrows:
Burn Wutong Ash, mix with milk. Apply to skin and beard/eyebrows; this is excellent.
Formula for dyeing beard and hair black:
Boil beans in vinegar-fermented grain liquid, then apply lacquer; the color becomes black like lacquer.
Another formula: First wash beard and hair clean. Take Duan Shi (Smelted Iron Ore) and Hufen (Lead carbonate) in equal parts. Mix with Jiang Shui (fermented grain water) and warm. Apply before sleep. Wrap in oilcloth, wash off next day; hair becomes black, very good.
Another formula for plucking white hairs to stimulate black regrowth:
Pluck the white hair, fill the follicle with good white honey, and black hair will grow. If eyebrows lack hair due to needle injury, applying honey also stimulates growth. Recently, people have taken river stones, ground them with Ding Xiang (Clove) juice, plucked the hair, and quickly applied the mixture to the follicle; black hair grows immediately. This method is highly effective.
If there are white dandruff flakes due to head wind, refer to the formulas in the Wind section and Lipid/Gloss formulas at the end of this chapter.
Yao's Formula for treating Acne:
