The Liver governs Blood (Xue, blood) and the Lung governs Qi (Qi, vital energy); Blood serves as Ying (Ying, nutritive qi) and Qi serves as Wei (Wei, defensive qi). Yin and Yang are paired without discrepancy; the two organs harmonize through mutual correspondence. If Blood is deficient and Qi is excessive, pregnancy is certainly impossible; if Blood is abundant and Qi is deficient, conception should occur. When a woman's menses cease, her pulse is slightly slippery (Hua, slippery) and rapid (Shu, rapid). Although the body may have illness, the pulse shows no pathogenic signs; it is not choppy (Se, choppy), deep-hidden (Fu, hidden), or wiry-taut (Xianjin, wiry and tense). The Cun (Cun, distal pulse position) is slight, the Guan (Guan, middle pulse position) is slippery, and the Chi (Chi, proximal pulse position) is rapid in form; flowing and coming-and-going like the pecking of a sparrow, it is smooth. Both hands' Guan pulses are large and corresponding, indicating that the fetus has taken shape without difference. The above details the fetal pulse under the fingers; for several months of pregnancy, the menses are closed. A rapid pulse on the left indicates a male, and on the right indicates a female; pulses with Zong (Zong, longitudinal) and Heng (Heng, transverse) characteristics suggest twins. An inverted pulse on the left hand yields three males, and a smooth pulse on the right hand yields three females. People may fear bias in the Qi of the left and right organs, but this is inferior to the principle of Yang males and Yin females. Slippery at Cun indicates Yang, slippery at Chi indicates Yin; both Cun positions being slippery and solid suggests taking twins (males). Both Chi positions being slippery and solid suggests two females (Yin); this is clear speech for determining gender. Slippery forms appearing at the right Chi and left Cun distinguish one male and one female. It is also said that a floating-large pulse at the left Cun indicates a male, and a deep-thin pulse at the right Cun indicates a female. Repeated diagnostic examinations have shown no error; this is stated to physicians as reliable evidence. When the infant's days are full and the fetus gathers, there is fever and chaotic pulse without distress. When sweating occurs, eating stops, and vomiting arises, spirit and essence gather within. A slippery-rapid pulse that does not scatter indicates a three-month fetus; a merely rapid pulse that does not scatter indicates a five-month mother. In the eighth, ninth, and tenth months, the rapidity and number diminish, though some women remain consistently flooding and rapid throughout. A fetal pulse that is wiry, firm, slippery, and smooth indicates safety; sinking, fine, and minute indicates death. If the pulse is sinking-fine with slight abdominal pain, although shaped like holding an urn, the whole abdomen remains still which is strange; only below the navel is there coldness with fluttering movement. Furthermore, the Chi pulse differs between morning and evening, with size, floating/sinking lacking fixed rules. Sometimes moving, sometimes stopping, sometimes present or absent, this is the manifestation of the Ghost Fetal pulse. Diagnosing continuously for several days thus, why ask about tonifying Qi and invigorating Blood? There is also a name called Yecha Fetal (Yecha Tai, demon fetus), urgent like wind and rain in pulse condition. After a short pause, it returns to its original state; otherwise, the Guan position becomes like pecking by a sparrow. Additionally, the pulse under the fingers is wiry-taut, plus irregular in size and rhythm. The Yecha pulse condition should be so; do not let fetal preservation become a topic of ridicule. Composed into the Rhymed Song of Fetal Syndrome Pulses, reading thoroughly will naturally lead to quick understanding.
