The Heart corresponds to Fire and combines with the Small Intestine to form a Fu organ (the Small Intestine is the Fu organ of reception and storage). Its meridian is the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian (Hand-Shaoyin Heart pulse), which is exterior-interior related to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian (Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine pulse).
Its pulse is Hong (Hong refers to the large shape of the Heart pulse), corresponding to the three months of Spring (Wood is Wang, Fire is Xiang), Wang in the three months of Summer, Fei in the sixth month of late Summer, Qiu in the three months of Autumn (Metal is Wang, Fire is Qiu), and Si in the three months of Winter (Water is Wang, Fire is Si). Its Wang days are Bing and Ding days, Wang hours are from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM; its Kun days are Geng and Xin days, Kun hours are from 3:00 PM to sunset; its Si days are Ren and Gui days, Si hours are from dusk to midnight. The Heart stores Shen (Shen is what the Heart stores), governs smell (note: text says "smell", though traditionally Heart governs taste/speech), nourishes Blood (Blood is what Heart Qi nourishes), manifests on the tongue, and produces speech (speech originates from the Heart, so it governs speech). Its color is Red, its odor is Scorched, its fluid is Sweat, its taste is Bitter, it favors Sweet (Sweet is the taste of the Spleen), and it dislikes Salty (Salty is the taste of the Kidney). Xinshu (Heart Shu point) is located at the fifth thoracic vertebra on the back (some say the seventh), and its Mu point is Juque (one cun below the heart); Xiaochangshu (Small Intestine Shu point) is located at the eighteenth thoracic vertebra on the back, and its Mu point is Guanyuan (three cun below the umbilicus). This is newly compiled.
The Heart belongs to Fire in the South (The Heart governs Blood, its color is Red, thus it is Wang in the South during Summer, corresponding to the Fire element). All things are abundant and flourishing; branches hang down and leaves spread out, all curving downwards, hence named "Gou" (Hook) (When the Heart is Wang, Taiyang is in charge, so grass and trees flourish, branches and leaves spread and curve downwards. Hence it is called Hook). The Heart pulse is Hong, large, and long. Hong indicates that Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) is solid; when solid, Qi has no outlet (A Hong pulse means Wei Qi is solid; when Wei Qi is solid, the couli [pores] are dense; when dense, Qi cannot exit). Large indicates that Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) is bright/vigorous; when vigorous and Hong interact, sweating can be induced, hence named "Long" (Ying is Blood; "Meng" should be a typo for "Ming"; when Blood is Wang, it is bright and large. When Ying is bright and Wei is solid, movement must be initiated to unblock fluids). When Long and Hong are harmonious, water and fluids are drawn in to irrigate the meridians and moisten the skin (Summer heat and Yang Qi are abundant, so people desire water/fluids to moisten the body and nourish hair and skin, just as grass and trees need rain to grow branches and leaves). Taiyang Hong and Large are both maternal bodies; fortunately aided by Wu and Ji Earth, they use firm rootstocks (Summer Taiyang Fire, Spring Wood is its mother. Yang begins to generate in Spring, named Shaoyang. In Summer, it becomes abundant and large, named Taiyang, hence called maternal body. Wu and Ji are Earth; Earth is the child of Fire; when Fire is Wang, Earth is Xiang, hence used to firm the rootstock). Yang Qi emerges upward, sweat appears on the head. In the fifth month, the interior dries up, the Bao (Bladder) is empty; if the physician incorrectly uses purgation, this constitutes double deficiency (Month should be Nei [Interior]; HT should be Gan [Dry], meaning dryness. These are character errors. The character Nei resembles Yue [Moon], and has been transmitted thus for a long time. The head is the convergence of all Yang Qi. In Summer, drinking fluids leads to sweat emerging upward, first flowing from the head to the body to fill the exterior, thus the five viscera become dry; dryness causes the Bao to be empty with little fluid. Bao refers to the Bladder, the Fu organ of fluids. Ignorant physicians do not understand and incorrectly use purgation, causing double deficiency). A floating pulse indicates Exterior without Interior, Yang has no function (Yang excess causes a floating pulse; sweating is appropriate, but purgation was incorrectly used, damaging Yin Qi. Yang is Exterior, Yin is Interior. The Classic states: Yang is the servant of Yin, Yin is the guardian of Yang, they act together. A floating pulse means no Interior. Incorrect treatment causes Yin and Yang to separate, unable to mutually serve). This not only endangers the body but also harms its Mother (Meaning purgation not only damages the Heart but also injures the Liver). From the Four Seasons Classic.
The Yellow Emperor asked: The summer pulse is like a hook; what makes it a hook? Qibo said: The summer pulse corresponds to the Heart, which is Fire in the South, the season when all things flourish and grow. Thus, its Qi comes strong and departs weak, hence called Hook. Opposite to this is disease. The Yellow Emperor asked: How is it opposite? Qibo said: If its Qi comes strong and departs strong, this is called Excess, disease is in the Exterior; if it comes weak and departs strong, this is called Deficiency, disease is in the Interior. The Yellow Emperor asked: For summer pulse Excess and Deficiency, what are their diseases? Qibo said: Excess causes fever and skin pain, leading to spreading sores; Deficiency causes vexation, upper coughing and spitting, lower qi leakage. The Emperor said: Excellent.
If the Heart pulse comes like pearls linked together, smooth like touching Langgan jade, it is a Ping (Normal) pulse. Summer relies on Stomach Qi as the foundation. If the Heart pulse comes panting-like (Jia Yi Jing reads "lei lei") continuously, slightly curved within, it is Heart Disease. If the Heart pulse comes curved at the front and stationary at the back, like handling a belt hook, it is Heart Death.
When the True Heart pulse arrives, it is hard and beating, like touching Coix seeds, continuous; if the color is red-black and lusterless, and hair breaks, death ensues. Summer with slight Stomach Qi and Hook is Ping; more Hook than Stomach Qi is Heart Disease; only Hook without Stomach Qi is Death. Stomach Qi with Stone pulse indicates Winter disease; severe Stone pulse indicates current disease. The Heart stores Pulse, and Pulse houses Shen. Fear and worry damage Shen; damaged Shen leads to fear and loss of self-control, emaciation, lusterless hair and complexion, dying in Winter. In Summer, Heart Fire is Wang; its pulse is Hong (Qian Jin Fang reads "floating, large, and Hong"), large and scattered, named Ping Pulse. If instead a sinking, soft, and slippery pulse is obtained, this is Kidney overcoming Heart, Water overcoming Fire, constituting Zhi Xie (Robber Evil), great reversal, ten deaths untreatable (One version says: Day, Month, Year count reaches two, avoid Ren and Gui days). If instead a large and slow pulse is obtained, this is Spleen overcoming Heart, Child supporting Mother, constituting Shi Xie (Solid Evil); although ill, it will recover spontaneously. If instead a string-like, thin, and long pulse is obtained, this is Liver overcoming Heart, Mother returning to Child, constituting Xu Xie (Empty Evil); although ill, it is easy to treat. If instead a floating (Qian Jin Fang reads "slight") choppy and short pulse is obtained, this is Lung overcoming Heart. Metal bullying Fire, constituting Wei Xie (Minor Evil); although ill, it heals immediately.
If the Heart pulse comes continuous like beads, smooth and slippery, two beats per respiration, it is Ping; three beats, Li Jing (Departing from the Channel), disease; four beats, Jing Depletion; five beats, Death; six beats, Life Exhausted. This is the Hand-Shaoyin pulse.
If the Heart pulse is extremely urgent, it is convulsion; slightly urgent, it is Heart pain radiating to the back, inability to eat. Extremely slack is maniacal laughter; slightly slack is Fu Liang (Hidden Beam) below the heart, moving up and down, occasional hemoptysis. Extremely large is throat obstruction; slightly large is Heart Bi radiating to the back, prone to tearing. Extremely small is frequent hiccups; slightly small is Xiao Dan (Wasting-Thirst). Extremely slippery is excessive thirst; slightly slippery is Heart Han radiating to the umbilicus, abdominal borborygmus. Extremely choppy is aphonia; slightly choppy is blood extravasation, limb coldness, tinnitus, and vertex disease. When Hand-Shaoyin Qi perishes, the pulse does not flow. Shaoyin is the Heart pulse. The Heart is the union of the pulse. If the pulse does not flow, blood does not circulate; if blood does not circulate, hair loses luster; thus, if the face is black like lacquered charcoal, blood has died first. Ren day is critical, Gui day is death, because Water overcomes Fire. Heart death organ: superficial pulse is solid, like beans hitting the hand; deep pulse is even more restless, death.
