The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: When wind-cold causes sweating, shoulder and back pain, and constitutes a stroke syndrome (Zhong Feng), accompanied by frequent urination with difficulty or incomplete emptying (Qian), this is due to wind-heat invading the Lung, causing severe stagnation of Lung Qi. One should drain the wind-heat, primarily using Tongqi Fangfeng Tang (Ventilation and Saposhnikovia Decoction).
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 qian above); Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 qian above); Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma) (0.3 qian); Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Bai Dou Kou Ren (Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) (each 0.2 qian above).
Crush the ingredients into coarse powder. Combine all as one dose, add two large cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals. Suitable for those with robust Qi; contraindicated for those with pale complexion lacking luster and shortness of breath.
If there is urinary incontinence, it indicates deficiency of Lung Qi. It is advisable to rest quietly to nourish Qi, avoid physical labor, and tonify with herbs such as Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); if not improved, consider internal heat and add Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix).
If there is shoulder and back pain preventing turning the head, this is stagnation and non-flow of Qi in the Hand-Taiyang channel. Disperse it with wind-dispelling herbs.
If there is spinal pain...
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) (each 1 qian above); Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 0.5 qian above); Man Jing Zi (Viticis Fructus) (0.3 qian); Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (0.2 qian).
Crush the ingredients into coarse powder. Combine all as one dose, add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove the dregs, and take warm after meals.
If the body feels heavy and the waist feels heavy and sinking, this is damp-heat in the channels. Add Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) 1 qian, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 0.5 qian, and Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian.
If the legs and feet feel heavy and weak, add Han Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) washed with wine...
If there are frequent nightmares during sleep and dribbling or painful urination, this is a combination disease involving pathogenic factors...
If white pus is passed after defecation, or only white pus is passed, it is due to Qi deficiency from overwork injuring the Large Intestine. Tonify with Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Decoction; if there is tenesmus and frequent urges, it is Blood deficiency, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
If Lung... a small amount.
If severe cases involve crossing hands over the chest and feeling confused/dizzy, this indicates severe deficiency of True Qi. If there is shortness of breath, add Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); if Qi is excessive, add Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica); in winter, remove Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) and add Cao Dou Kou Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus).
If there is sore throat and submandibular swelling, with a surging pulse and red face...
If there is tinnitus, yellow eyes, swelling of the cheeks and submandible, pain along the outer posterior aspect of the neck, shoulders, axilla, elbow, and arm, with red face and surging pulse, use Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma) to unblock the channel blood, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to reduce swelling, and use Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) to benefit Yuan Qi and drain fire pathogens; if the pulse is tight, it is cold. Or if the face is pale and prone to sneezing, or the complexion is dull, these are also signs of cold. Also add the four herbs including Qiang Huo, but drain the Foot-Taiyang channel, do not use Lian (Huang Lian) and Qin (Huang Qin), add a small amount of Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) to unblock the pulse; if the complexion is dull and there is much sorrow and fear, add Gui (Rougui/Cinnamomi Cortex) and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
If white pus is passed in stool, with slight slipping/leakage and frequent soiling of underwear, this is Qi collapse. Add Fu Zi Pi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Cortex), and in severe cases, add Mi Ke (Papaveris Capsicum); if Qi is stagnant, use only sweet herbs to tonify Qi, lie quietly without speaking to nourish Qi.
